Matt lucas in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Last night the first promotional photos were revealed of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as The White Queen from Tim Burton’s 3D re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland. And now Movies.ie has come across this promo photo of Matt Lucas as both Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Check out the full photo after the jump.

The characters appeared in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, as two fat brothers who complement each other’s words and never contradict each other, even when one of them, according to the famous nineteenth century nursery rhyme, “agrees to have a battle”.

Yahoo also has another promotional character photo of Mia Wasikowska as Alice:

The film is actually a sequel to the original story, and follows Alice, now 17 years old, as she escapes from a snooty party and follows a white rabbit down a hole, back to Wonderland. The White Rabbit is convinced that he has the right girl, the one who had visited the magical land ten years prior. But Alice doesn’t remember her past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them, but will she? Can she? I highly recommend you check out the the character promo photos, as well as the concept art in our previous story.

Alice in Wonderland is scheduled to hit theaters on March 5th 2010.

Yessssssss. Matt Lucas is one of the funniest men alive. Little Britain = <3
  • Ryz
    Agreed
  • And again WHAT!!??
  • WHAT!!??
  • ziggi
    lol!
    thats freaking great.
cant wait to see the cat.
  • This film is getting more awesome by each picture!

    =D
  • The news that this isn't just another retelling of the Wonderland story is awesome. I have never read Through the Looking Glass, is this the same story or has Burton written a new one?
  • joe
    wtf hahaha
  • Charlie
This storyline seems frighteningly familiar to one of the greatest movies from my childhood, Hook. Burton is not only doing a remake, he's stealing an original way of doing a remake. Spielberg is God.
  • a mckenney
I'm pretty sure hook robbed the TV version of Through the Looking Glass. So, it would appear, that even God can't keep his thieving hands to himself.

i still can't picture these people/creatures speaking & moving. its really hard to imagine.

i will say that i guarantee this film is gonna inspire a new generation of clothing fads. hot topic is gonna be stocked full of clothes/accessories in this vein. next summer will be the take-off of 'alice wear'.
  • Tim Burton ruins everything he touches. From the few shots so far here, this proves to be no exception. How people can like this hack's work is beyond me.
  • quintushalls
I agree. I don't understand how people could like the shots from this film. They look terrible.
  • Give an example or explanation and I may take you argument at any sort of value. Personally I really like some of his stuff. He has a style that fits some projects and not others.
  • frelling_cute
Blahhh. I dont like it just because. Grow up.
  • dagreenman18
    A sequel? huh. okay.

    Also, FUCK YEAH MATT LUCAS!
  • JoShmo
Just googled Matt Lucas baahahahahaha!! He looks just like this.
  • Really? You had to Google Matt Lucas?
  • Man, I keep getting a "Choclate Factory" vibe with this pick. I prefer Burton going goth, but not him going light and bubblegum. Just feels weird.

And no, I have not seen Big Fish, so I don't know if the lightness worked in that movie.
  • I have seen Big Fish and can tell you that the lightness absolutely worked.
  • Wow, that look like crap. I believe I saw the same "believable" graphics by turning on DK mode in the old N64 game "James Bond 007: Goldeneye." Looking less and less forward to seeing this movie.
  • AndImRubbishAtPaint
that is some seriously awful character design, wtf people, look at it - i could do better with freakin MS Paint
  • Meli_V
These pictures are tripping me out - in a good way. I can't wait to see them come to life on the big screen.
  • Little Britain is bad, bad, bad, bad. I think Matt Lucas is quite affable in interviews though so I have hope.
  • Palmer
I'm not too keen on the Humpty Dumpty look.
  • takua108
I would have preferred either a film adaptation of the videogame American McGee's Alice. While the gameplay sucked, the idea of having a catatonic, institutionalized Alice being summoned to save the now-unrecognizable Wonderland was incredible.

To everyone hating on Burton: He has a certain style that appeals to crowds. He takes what images you have already ingrained and reimagines them. Some of his past films and style almost immediatly throw him into that category.

It's his take on the film, and it's his goth-art-like style that appeals to so many. My perspective is that since it's such a drastic deviation from original tellings is what makes it so interesting. It's just a different look on the story, so if you don't like the direction of it, don't watch it.

The way Tim Burton twist old classics into new interesting films is just simply fantastic ! It will be fun comparing the two flims , the "old" and the "new" .
  • frelling_cute
    Dust. You will eat Dust.
  • frelling_cute
    This looks wild.
  • taylor
ah! im so glad tim burton is directing this. ive always wanted to see a production of alice where i felt like i was on acid watching it, considering lewis carrol was on acid when he wrote it. something just dark and twisted. and i mean, if you read the book, its pretty messed up. tim burton is perfect for this project.
  • Natosha
I can't wait for this movie to hit the big screen!!! I enjoyed Alice in Wonderland as a child, and have shared the movie with, now 7 year old. Neither of us can wait to see it! We love Johnny Depp and Tim Burton movies also!
  • chris
Sorry, but I don't like Tim Burton's style. He goes out of his way to make freaks the norm but in so doing makes normal people villians. If you're not gothy, grungy, dark or look like a beat up potato in his films you're usually up to no good. And Depp is always too over the top. He ruined Willy Wonka. Tim Burton's worlds hold no interest, attraction or amusement for me.
  • chris
Tim Burton's films are one-sided and predictable. Bad = Good and misunderstood, Good = secretly evil or repressed. Visually they are dark and unappealing. Compare any movie he's done to say Amelie or Penelope and you'll see the difference in good story-telling/visuals vs. over-hyped gothic propoganda.

I hear his next project is "Chum- the unloved boy who picked his nose but was really beautiful in a world of beautiful people who were actually repressed, uptight scum." Chum is played by Johnny Depp.
