The Pacific

Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and from the creators of “Band of Brothers”, The Pacific is a a 10-part HBO mini-series which tells the intertwined stories of three Marines, Robert Leckie (played by James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda), during America’s battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II. You might remember that we posted a promo trailer for the series back in March.

Produced on a reported budget of more $200 million (some have reported $250 million), and shot on location in Australia, the series follows (from an early press release) “The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.”

HBO has begun airing a new trailer for this epic miniseries. Watch it now after the jump, and please leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Directors include Carl Franklin (HBO’s “Rome”), Jeremy Podeswa (HBO’s “Six Feet Under”), Tony To (HBO’s “Band of Brothers”), Tim Van Patten (HBO’s “The Sopranos”) and Graham Yost (HBO’s “From the Earth to the Moon”).

The Pacific is based on the books “With the Old Breed,” by Eugene Sledge, which was hailed by historian Paul Fussell as “one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war,” and “Helmet for My Pillow,” by Robert Leckie (recipient of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Annual Award), as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers. Continuing the World War II oral history work begun by his father Stephen E. Ambrose (author of the book “Band of Brothers”), Hugh Ambrose serves as a consultant on the miniseries.

The Pacific is scheduled to begin airing in March 2010.

I was still hoping for a late 2009 release. But it looks like it'll be worth the wait.

Holy crap, Joseph Mazello grew up! It's the kid from Jurassic Park.

The Pacific Theater is usually neglected in stories of WWII, and before I watched the trailer, I was going to recommend to everyone that they read "With the Old Breed". And now that I see it is directly based off that book, this can't come soon enough. I might just have to reread my copy at home before then.

First impressions are always the key with this stuff, and this series looks fantastic I can't wait. I have a soft spot for WWII movies and TV series.

  • "What do you believe in?"
    "I believe in ammunition..."

If it's anything like the 'Band of Brothers' then this will be one epic mini-series. Spielberg, World War 2, a $200+ estimated budget, what could honestly go wrong (unless he introduced a adventurer named Indiana that changed history using just simply a whip and some alien technology...)? :D
  • HOLY SHIT! I am going out right now and i'm going to try and make this for $200!
  • Well if they did do all of that for $200, it would be something special!

*Obviously I meant $200million dollars as stated in the article...
  • I live in Japan and have traveled to places such as Guam, Saipan, Okinawa, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Guam and Saipan still have a lot of WWII relics there such as pillboxes and rusted out tanks. Hiroshima and Nagasaki we all know about that.

War is a bloody and dirty business. I hope The Pacific truly reflects that. WWII should never be forgotten because so much blood was split on both sides and humanity should never have to repeat that.

looks well made. looks like something ive seen before. ww2 was an epic war, but its been done. i want more original content in my mainstream movies.
  • Ahh The Pacific. Where have you been all my life?
  • Awesome!! As a huge fan of Brand of Brothers, I can't wait to watch this!

And THIS is why i love HBO.

I'm really getting sick of all the old-style war movies. How about a futuristic war miniseries that is actually good? Something surprising and different for a change?!! After seeing Band of Brothers, I can already expect exactly what is going to happen in the series.

At least with a massive budget and being on HBO, we can expect to see some boobies. Boobies make any tv series worth watching.
  • Yeah whisper it but I heard that the allies win!
  • Justin
holy crap, its the kid from Jurassic Park!
  • Haha, I noticed that too...and I am very bad with faces.
  • I thought Tom Hanks was involved somehow? Producer or such?
  • Palmer
It looks great, I hope it'll be just as good as Band of Brothers.
  • Looks great. I just love these WW2 movies and TV-series. Makes me wanna play MoH again.

If this is anything like Generation Kill or Band Of Brothers, then I'm in. I thought they abandoned project cause there was so little news of production up until now. Definitely gonna buy the Dvd series when it comes out.

I only wish there were mini-series of this caliber portraying the other Allies [China, Russia, Australia, etc] and their struggle. I'm sure there are great stories there yet to be told.
  • C_Sozou
    Looks awesome.

Guy from The Departed is in this...?
  • danno
    It's The Thin Red Miniseries.

    But in a good way.
  • wow. that looks amazing

Nothing in life fascinates me more than the second World War. This truly looks exceptional, as did Band of Brothers. Given the names attached, I think we're in for a great ride with this one.
  • jason B
it feels like they turned mallick's 'the thin red line' into a mini-series, which is a brilliant idea. i know they are based on different books, and even though both deal with Guadalcanal, it's the overall style of TTRL that i am reminded of; a philosophical look at war, the location becoming a character, panning sweeps of action, etc. it looks beautiful and if yer gonna draw inspiration from a someone - mallick is an excellent well to draw from.

and that last B.E.V. shot of the guy with the flamethrower is too fucking cool!
  • sammyjankis
I agree, it felt very much in the vein of The Thin Red Line, I am stoked to see it.

Holy shit! I cant wait. Seen a similar trailer last year on youtube, maybe it was the same one..cant remember. Hey thats the young kid from Jurassic Park!
  • kj
Gotta have faith after seeing that trailer+the fact that the people responsible for band of brothers are involved
  • Prisoner627
This Looks amazing. Shame we have to wait so long, but I know it will be worth it.
  • tigersuit
amazing! Isn't Hans Zimmer doing the music aswell?
  • Hans Zimma!
  • That looks great, but I really hope they'll do the Clint Eastwood thing where they humanize the Japanese; "Band of Brothers" was pretty one-sided.
  • scotty
I think thats what Band of Brothers was meant to be. The tale of Brotherhood amongst soldiers on the front line. It wasnt about the reasons of the war (other than a viewer moral level) or about the nazi's just about this group of guys doing what they needed to do and losing friends along the way.
  • Panda
Yeah, it was pretty one sided but I thought it was a nice touch to let the German officer give that final speech to the men.
  • rich
don't people ever get sick of ww2

    i know i do
  • Mack41
I'm tired of WWII dramas, but not war movies. Can never get enough of Nazi's and Japs getting their asses kicked by Amurica and the Allies.
  • MrDisturbing
uhh.... Amurica...? I'd rather not ask.
And I hope you're kidding with a comment like that. Unless you're an ignorant little Scheiße.
    The series looks brilliant btw.
  • I guess if you are 12 and have ADHD sure..
  • Poland626
I am sick of it. well, it's just that there are so many stories about WWII that it's getting boring. BUT, they could do a call of duty and do a WW3 type film. That would be interesting.
  • Aladdin Sane
    Survey says, "You're an idiot."
  • you
    no it wouldn't
  • Poland626
    Why not?
