World’s Greatest Dad Red Band Movie Trailer

World's Greatest Dad

With Father’s Day coming up this weekend, Magnolia Pictures has taken the opportunity to release a red band movie trailer for Bob Goldthwait’s World’s Greatest Dad. I had the wonderful opportunity to catch this film at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and by the time I left the theater, I was hurting from laughing so much. You can read my full review here.

This is not your traditional comedy. It’s dark. REALLY dark. For example, Goldthwait’s 2006 film Sleeping Dogs Lie (originally titled “Stay”) was about a relationship that is destroyed when a girlfriend reveals to her boyfriend that she had a past indiscretion (read: blowjob) with a dog. Believe it or not, Goldthwait’s 2009 follow-up is at least 10 times more twisted and probably 20 times funnier. Watch the red band movie trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The official plot synopsis follows:

Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a man who has learned to settle. He dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as a high school poetry teacher. His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won’t give his father the time of day. He is dating Claire (Alexie Gilmore), the school’s adorable art teacher, but she doesn’t want to get serious — or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating.

Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can only live with the knowledge of how he got there.

The details have been removed to protect potential spoilers, but basically, its a very f’d up story about a very f’d up situation.

World’s Greatest Dad hits theaters on August 21st 2009.

Is it possible? A good Robin Williams movie in this decade?
  • Insomnia.
  • Mikeysharp
One Hour Photo, Death to Smoochy
  • I never said he didn't have bad films but that this decade he has had a good one. (even if it is only one lol Insomnia doesn't deserve to be forgotten).
  • Sounds interesting, Robin Williams still has acting talent he is somewhat a hit and miss type of guy though.
  • Wow. I'll definitely watch this. However that synopsis you gave didn't really match up with the trailer, unless I missed something :\
  • Sketch
They're prolly not going to give away all that much just yet, but I think it could have eluded to it a bit better. Either way looks very interesting and funny as hell, I can't wait to check it out.
  • I think it would be really hard to sell the movie based on the real plot synopsis...
  • Lawdog
Bobcat Goldthwait directing Robin Williams in a dark, dark comedy that would be hard to market if people knew what they were getting into? Ok, I'm sold.
  • Right. I had to come down to the comments to make sure it wasn't taken out.. I'm excited for this movie.
  • Captain Awesome
Holy shit, this looks great already
  • too soon for a carradine joke?
  • Corey J
Not at all... I came here to do just that!

  • Xaeinovis
Wow, a recent Robin Williams movie that looks great? I must be still asleep... =/
  • Wait when did Bobcat Goldthwait start directing movies? Im way out the loop in this one lol. This does look like it could be one of the better roles that Robin Williams has played in awhile.

    1991

...and it was so awesome that it took 15 years for people to catch up.
  • Heather
    Looks like it's absolutely hilarious!!!
  • Can't wait for this.
  • if you dont I'll stab you in the face.
  • looks good, the less screwball boink movies williams has been in the last few years the better.
  • Grammar dude
    Asphyxiation.
  • Reminds me of a twisted funnier version of American Beauty

I've heard about this a while back and its nice to get to see a trailer from it. I don't recall seeing any of the directors previous work but this movie looks funny.
  • Maybe you're familiar with the director's work as an actor in Police Academy and Shakes the Clown? Or as a standup comedian from the 80s? I never saw the movie(s) he's directed but you'd have to recognize his voice from something. Just look him up on youtube
  • Fir3Wolf
I know him as an actor/comedian, what I ment was his work as a director. I'll probably try to catch one of his movies and see what hes like as a film maker.
  • Can't wait to get the Robin Williams World's Greatest Dad/Father's Day combination DVD someday.
  • egyptnation
robin williams laughing at the "being a parent..." line at the end of the trailer is so funny. just the way he does it has so many layers to it. he just wants to scream "you have no idea what the fuck your talking about"
  • How awesome is it that the accidental death in World's Greatest Dad now has pop culture relevance with the untimely demise of David Carradine?
  • jason B
i fucking love williams in roles like this.
  • I saw this movie at SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival)

Definitely very dark. But very funny.
    It's awesome though.
  • Travis McGee
I'm a huge Robin Williams fan. The guy is hilarious. Plus, he came to visit us when I was stationed in Iraq. We were attacked with mortars in the middle of his act he was doing for the troops. As we stood there crowded, not able to go anywhere, escorts tried to get Robin to safety. He refused and said that if we had to be out here, so did he. Then he continued his routine. Awesome time, great guy. Lots of respect for him.

Why is it the craziest movies always seem the most like real life?
  • Brian
"If you don't act right at dinner, I'll stab you in the face."
Only Robin could pull that off. Looks great!
  • bubbajosh
This looks like something I will definitely see...Robin Williams in something truly funny
  • Eliza
This looks fantastic, and yes, quite dark. But I'm worried that the trailer is not as dark as it should be considering the actual story. If people see and know only this before walking into the theater, you could end up with some really upset audience members.
  • Mike
This looks completely dark and twisted. Count me in!
  • Is that the kid from Spykids?? This looks amazing, really wish Williams had taken more of these kind of roles instead of ... everything else he's done in the past few years.
  • spacedog128
this looks to be darkly entertaining in the same way that Todd Solondz films are...
  • Collider.com posted some clips awhile back and they were all darkly funny. Can't wait to finally see this one.
  • thebertosaurus
This is going to be great.
  • SharkBaitHooHaHa
The trailer had me after the Haiku!
  • yep
The son dies and he is happy about it.

I watched this at the Boston Film Fest. It is very dark and very funny. Great Sound track. Even liked the montage with Deadly Syndrome.

Idem with you, Sir. Previously I thought that the ending will be after my fancy, but that is not. I heartily concur with your appraisal; "This is not your traditional comedy. It’s dark. REALLY dark."

I am grateful can see this movie.
