Indiana Jones 5 Really Isn’t That Close

Earlier this week most of us gave a collective groan when Shia LaBeouf mentioned that Steven Spielberg had cracked the story for a fifth Indiana Jones film. So how far off is it, really? Empire’s headline today (”Indy 5 Is A Go!”) might lead you to think sooner rather than later, but that may not be the case. Producer Frank Marshall said things that Empire interpreted as meaning the film “could be approaching the pencil-chewing script development stage,” which means it isn’t anywhere close to happening.

It’s really about the script,” Marshall said. “Once we see that, we’ll see. We’re not going to wait another 20 years. We’d all love to make another one. I’m anxious to hear the idea!” Translation: standard producer stuff. That line could mean anything. The one thing to take away from this is that, given the outrageous box office Indy 4 did worldwide, everyone involved won’t be as reluctant to give it another go. But how much of that $786m worldwide take was due to anticipation and interest built up over twenty years? After Crystal Skull, you can bet that audiences won’t be as quick to embrace another Indy movie just because Harrison Ford puts on a fedora.

And in case the situation still isn’t clear, Marshall weighs in again. “Until there’s a script, nothing’s definite. I haven’t heard the idea.” Last time settling on a script took years, as Spielberg, Lucas and Ford all have to approve the story and any draft. I’d like to think that after taking a long, hard look at the fourth film, Spielberg at least might be severely critical of any pages that cross his desk. Especially if they involve Indy Jr. in a serious capacity, which has to be part of the idea.

In the meantime, there’s a wonderful adventure movie about an old guy in theatres right now. Hopefully Spielberg& Co. have seen it a few times.

  • You have Lucas involved, there will be a movie. He really has nothing else so if he can get money easily, he will.

I JUST registered with IntenseDebate and now everything moves to DISQUS?? What the hell?!

Anyway to me what's important is that films with a great sense of adventure, discovery (and possibly the supernatural) continue to get made. It doesn't have to be "Indy 5," per se, but no other franchise has stepped forward to take the mantle of exploration/serial movie as of yet (National Treasure doesn't count).

    why the change to disqus?

Please no more Indy. Did they really think the last one was a hit. It was an utter failure.
  • Intense Debate has been down so much recently, we're exploring our other options

    I feel different.

Indy is done now. Happy with my trilogy boxset. That's it. Nothing else counts. (Unless Lucas is not involved).

I Love the "Up" reference. But I think besides the last few minutes the latest Indy movie wasn't all that bad. Obviously I hope the next one is better. Raiders of the Lost Ark stuff...but we will see. Will it get done? Maybe. Soon? I hope so or ol'Ford will be far to old to pull anything off.

Unfortunately Lucas is working hard on his new TV series (which I hope will be awesome) plus there are those rumblings about that Red Tails movie he's working on...and I doubt they be able to do it unless Lucas is right behind Spielberg, doing his pretending to direct thing that he has pretty much done for thirty years.

Why do I keep thinking of that amazing South Park from last season?
I kind of want to see that Red Tails movie he keeps talking about...just to see if he can still direct a movie.

well Disqus is great, but i do miss the thumbs up/thumbs down.

And please for the love of god, no more Indy. Crystal Skull was so disappointing.,
  • Well there is still a thumbs up option (Like) :)
  • Please please please no. Intense debate has a better look and many commenters have already committed to it and to jump off makes me not really care about commenting. So I'll go back to being a 'guest' whose views are as useful as a male nipple.
  • Oh and the load time after you click post comment is atrocious.

i'm pretty cool with Indy IV. the opening is my 2nd fav of the series. had classic indy moments. overall it's my 3rd fav ahead of Doom. the first 2/3 is grade A to me. once they get to akator it's zzzz. Indy 5 would always be lovely. but i think Ford will be too old. the epilogue was a fine way to send indy out anyway.

It'll probably never happen. Lucas will sandbag every idea and new draft until he convinces everyone that it should be set in space and feature a scene where old Indy and old Han duke it out on screen.

id like to think spielbergh will be highly critical of anything george lucas.

  • If they do end up making another Indy (not indie) film, leave Shia out (which I know is impossible give Speilberg's little affinity for the fool). There is no way in hell the little Tranny boy could fill Ford's acting shoes as a gruff hero. Also, no more CGI and for sure no aleins or giant ants or comical villians who aren't funny.

Speak for yourself. You may have groaned, but I got happy in the pants.

Whenever they make Indiana Jones 5, I'll go see it. It's the last one that gets a free pass though if they don't bring it back up to Indiana Jones standards. My problem with the 4th wasn't with the alien plot. The whole movie just felt like they didn't even care. Like they just threw it together to get people to stop bugging them to make another Indy movie. People have differing opinions about one or the other sequels, but you could see that they cared. They had fun making Indy movies, and it carried over to audience. Crystal Skulls felt just the opposite. Sorry, Mr. Spielberg. Sorry for the inconvenience of having to make a movie you didn't want to make. Sorry we all wanted to chip in and give you $750 million.

I Love Indiana Jones (even Temple of Doom). Bring on #5!
  • I accidentally posted this twice.

    Ah, well.
  • Everyone is so quick to slam George for the film. While I agree he struggles as of late, I also think Steven and Kathleen Kennedy share some significant blame here. Kathleen has an almost flawless track record of schmaltz and I honestly have not been able to appreciate anything Steven has done since around 1994. It's almost as if being at the top of an industry means that no one around you has the guts to tell you that an idea sucks. I yearn for the days when people said 'no' to these three (should I include Ford in this group?!?).

But I have pretty high standards here. Crystal Skull would have been the BEST National Treasure film, but as an Indy flick, it was a little embarrasing.

I think they need to lose the comedy, how much was there in Raiders??? not that much...lose the fluffy animals George...get a better side kick, and it needs to be I hate to say it ''darker''...everything else will slot into place then we'll have Indy back...
