cera black ghostbusters

Even before a third Ghostbusters film was officially announced, I heard rumors that Year One/The Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were working on a script and that they were writing a role for Year One star Michael Cera. While the details of Eisenberg and Stupnitsky’s role in the project turned out to be true, and quickly spread around the world, nothing has ever been said about Cera’s possible involvement.

When Moviefone asked the actor if he was interested in being involved in the Year One scribe’s Ghostbusters 3, Cera was quick to squash the idea:

No. I don’t think so. ‘Ghostbusters’ is too important for me to try and be one. I would feel like a phony. I would feel like an impostor.

On the other hand, his Year One co-star Jack Black said he’d be interested.

Could I see myself in it? Yeah, I can bust some ghosts! I ain’t afraid of no ghosts! Buster. [Laughs]

Now again, this is all very speculative. There isn’t even a completed script. Black asaying he would be interested does not mean that he’s ever talked to Ramis, Eisenberg, Stupnitsky or anyone about the possibiliy. I want to make this clear because some sleazy news outlets are spinning Black’s quote and claiming that he’s been lobbying Ramis for a role in the new movie. Not so.

The above two responses are the exact opposite of what I hoped for. Cera’s nerdy awkwardness seems perfectly fit for a next Generation of Ghostbusters, while Black seems like an example of what I fear Ghostbusters 3 could become. No offense to Black, I loved him in School of Rock and High Fidelity, but his loud crazy man act belongs no where near the ecto chamber. Plus we’ve already seen Black in a Ghostbusters remake directed by Michel Gondry. For those who don’t remember, or never saw, watch the video clip embedded below from Be Kind Rewind.

  • I think there's more to Jack Black than the loud crazy man. I guess his appropriate employment would depend on the script, and on the basis of all Eisenberg and Stupnitsky work I've read so far, I feel really very good.
  • Have to agree with Brendon. I just don't think JB gets offered much else. Go back and watch BOB ROBERTS for young, creepy Jack Black.
  • Gennaro Gattuso

    This

Problem is, Jack Black doesn't seem to have much appetite for doing anything but the loud, crazy stuff these days.
  • Margot At The Wedding.

Jack Black has got that ghost busting quality about him. He'd be perfect.
  • I reckon Jack Black could be good for the role.
    Just not his stereotype character.
  • I could see Black being the new Ray Stantz -esque character. Also, the exposition heavy scientist route might chill the crazy man persona.
  • I'd love to see Neil Patrick Harris busting ghosts.
  • Solid
Shame really, Cera'd have been a good oscar and shit. Jack black's actually a good fit with his crazy man act. I don't know who around here lives in New York, but most of us are like that really...

I have to give a little hand clap to Mr. Sciretta for making clear what are rumours and what aren't. This is exactly what I love about slash film and it's fantastic staff.
  • An actor saying he respects a film too much to be in the sequel means he's perfect casting. Don't rule him out yet... people can be persuaded...
  • Dylan
Jack Black would be great for a big, one scene cameo (like in Anchorman)

i know the real reason why Cera doesn't want to do it. they do not want to change the uniform to zipper hoodies.. i read that he has a clause in his contract that his character must wear zipper hoodies in order to enhance his awkwardness and his line delivery. Arrested Development movie? No zipper hoodie, no deal. Ghostbusters 3? No deal. Now Nick and Norah's infinite bullcrap? Oh yes sign me up.
  • he does look good in those hoodies. I think Cera gets too much hate from angry online people.
  • JReaves
And yet he did year one. Odd. I don't care for him THAT much, but bloggers who hate on actors with stupid, un-thought out insults, need to get a life.
  • stb247
But he looks good in those hoodies...
  • Seriously
I love that everyone is complaining about Jack Black playing the same character, but no one has said anything along the lines of "Michael Cera can only play Michael Cera." It was great in Arrested Development, but the guy seriously needs to learn a new trick or two. He can be funny at times, but I'm seriously tired of his schtick.
  • i would rather go with zach galifianakis than Jack Black. I like Jack and Michael Cera, but I would like to see someone outside of the box taking on Ghostbusters.
  • So cut costs and sign Jesse Eisenberg. What is the difference. That is the best part about Michael Cera. There is a cheaper one out there if he turns a role down i.e Adventureland.
  • I have a hard time picturing Cera trying to play that role as well as Eisenberg did.

I think if they toned Jack down a bit, which is possible, even a bit like Peter Jackson did in King Kong, he could make a perfect fit in that universe. Like someone said, a Ray Stantz, but I would think more so like Louis's character, especially since Rick Moranis doesn't want to come back in.

I think Jack Black would benefit greatly from working with Murray, akroyd & the rest.
I bet they would help him alot & reign him in
  • they need to get Hugo from LOST to be a ghostbuster
  • I actually think JB could pull it off very easily. I'm excited to see where the film goes though.
  • dagreenman18
props to Cera for respecting the Franchise.

As for Jack Black, please no. We don't need him in this. But i am looking foward to Brutal Legend.
  • Michael Cera is a punk; I'd hate to see him as a GB and think Black would fit nicely.
  • Mattalica
    Ray Stantz - Zack Galafanakis
Peter Venkman - Sam Rockwell or Zach Braff
    Egon Spengler - Peter Sarsgaard
    Winston - Romany Malco

or you can go all Apatow
    Ray - Seth Rogen
    Egon - Jason Segal
    Venkman - Paul Rudd
    Winston - Craig Robinson
  • harrycaul
here's my casting.. i know it's kind of random but here it goes...

    Ray Stantz - Dan Aykroyd
    Peter Venkman - Bill Muray
    Egon Spengler - Harold Ramis
    Winston - Ernie Hudson
  • ummm. It's fun to see who can play who BUT usually when people want to do reboots, they don't realize when made the originals so good. It's not about the effects or the action; it's about the cast and direction.
  • I think the 3rd film would benefit from some actual villian casting too. Pick an actor with some charisma.

Paul Rudd would be a great Ghostbuster.
  • Michael Cera for the longest time said he didn't want to be in the arrested development movie but then when they asked him he said yes. So who knows.
  • AL
I agree with you on Cera. I think he has some potential to be a new ghostbuster, but I have to disagree with what you said about Jack Black. True, most of his roles are written for his "loud crazy man act," but he doesn't do it in every movie he's been in. And ya never know. That crazy man act could work! And I bet he'd be good for quite a few one-liners and some good comic relief in some of the more serious times in the movie. Just a thought.
  • FRANKY TARANTINO
HI MY NAMES FRANKY TARANTINO,AND IM A LONG TIME GHOSTBUSTERS FAN OF THE MOVIES AND CARTOONS.I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY A PART OF THE GHOSTBUSTERS AS I DID WHEN I WAS YOUNGER AND IN GRAMMAR SCHOOL.I DO ALOT OF BACKGROUND ACTING WHEN POSSIBLE BUT I BELIEVE I WOULD FIT IN AS A CASTING MEMBER TO PORTRAY THIS THIRD MOVIE.
  • you go for it ghostbuster! hahahahah
  • harker
Reading about this and find that Jack Black would be interested in being a ghostbuster. No way! This man is a good actor to some of the films that had been out but he will distroy ghostbusters. He does not have that characteristic of a ghosbuster. If you look at the original films, the characters are not "in your face, load mouth" characters. They have their humour and funnyness, but mellowed. Jack black is good for some films, but not ghostbusters.
