fake posters judd apatow funny people adam sandler

In Judd Apatow’s Funny People, Adam Sandler’s character George Simmons is a successful stand-up comic turned comedy star who has appeared in many shitty but successful movies. Apatow was forced to create some of the character’s earlier big screen hits. Some of the films appear as posters or whatnot in the background, while others actually feature prominently on screen.

Click on the poster images above to enlarge. After the jump we have a few clips from some of these films, complete with hilariously bad plot outlines.

MerMan (1998) When Emma (Elizabeth Banks), a spunky marine biologist, discovers a real life Merman, she promises to keep his secret if he’ll help get her a research grant. But when a jealous colleague suspects something’s fishy, its the Merman who has to save Emma’s tail.

Code Green (2003) A park ranger teams up with a city-slicker detective (Dwayne Johnson) to catch an escaped convict in the Pacific Northwest. One has to survive the elements. The other has to survive his partner.

Dog’s Best Friend (2003) After his partner is murdered in a botched heist, a detective is teamed with the top dog on the force - a canine agent named Slash. Together, they must infiltrate the gang that took his partner’s life before it’s too late…

Astro-Not (2004) When a slacker janitor at NASA is accidentally launched into space, he is forced to rely on his wits - and he soon learns that in space, no one can hear you clean.

My Best Friend is a Robot (2004) John and Ted (Owen Wilson) are best friends — they like the same food, they like the same movies, and they like the same sports. But John didn’t meet Ted, he bought him. Designed to be his compatible buddy, John got more than he bargained for with this feisty robot when Ted teaches John that real friendship can’t be programmed.

Sayonara Davey! (2007) Davey refuses to grow up. He takes a job at his alma mater just so he can party, but when a paperwork mix up sends him to Japan as a foreign exchange student, his host family spoils all his fun. Mr. Ashito is determined to turn Davey around but is surprised when Davey teaches them a few lessons himself.

Little By Little (2007) A busy nuclear physicist’s life is changed when the radiation he works with begins to shrink him one inch every day. Forced to face his future, he begins to discover that it’s the little things in life that really count.

Re-Do (2008) Craig, a workaholic lawyer, never made time for his relationships. Alone and depressed on his 40th birthday, he wonders about the life he could have lead. But be careful what you wish for… you might just find yourself in diapers! When a wizard gives Craig a second chance at his youth, he discovers that sometimes it takes becoming a baby to learn how to be a man. Co-starring Justin Long.

I totally agree! "Sayonara Davey!" was pretty damn funny.
  • waltw
Judd Apatow is a genus. There is no other comedy director/producer out there today responsible for so many great instant classic movies. After the 40 year old virgin and Knocked Up how good will this be? I'm guessing it'll be the highest grossing r rated comedy this summer. I saw the red banned trailer at Bruno the other night and this was the only movie that seemed good. Live on Judd Apatow Productions.

wtf? lol apparently you can buy season 1 of "yo teach...!" on the nbc website for the show in which jason schwartz plays in funny people!
  • Liz
or any that took a pot shot at Space Camp!
  • Bwk
    Couldn't be less funny.
  • steelydwill
I like everything except anything that took a pot shot at Turner And Hooch.
  • I think I have to agree that Sayonara Davey looks awesome, but I wouldn't mind Little by Little, it seems like Billy Madison, you know one of those Adam Sandler moral movies.
  • waltw
Are you high? Adam Sandler in Billy Madison is how this movie looks to you. What does he look like to you in reign on me like Adam Sandler in Little Nicky. Wow. You need to learn how to tell movies apart. I wasn't trying to be a jerk with this comment but to me this movie looks like a fresh kind of comedy Adam Sandler is doing and has the potential to bring him back into the mainstream again.
  • Merman shouldn't be rated R. His bio says "Thanks to his success of the family film Merman..."
Yes, I am awesome for noticing this inaccuracy on a fictitious film poster for a viral marketing campaign.
  • Marko
Did George Simmons not make a "Punch Drunk Love"? Or does the website want to ignore that?
  • LuMendz
I love that they put so much effort into all of these viral stuff. They're so scary realistic that they're possible enough to be made!
Also "Yo Teach!" would actually work as a webseries IMO.
  • I'd watch "Little by Little" and "My Best Friend Is a Robot."
  • JKW
They should've just named the character "Adam Sandler" and it would've counted as a bio-pic.
  • Ben
I love the Fonz impersonation that is Davey
  • PapaGeorgioSmurf
They're all rated R as well...which is weird, since most of Adam Sandler's recent stuff has been kiddie fare.
  • This movie sounds like it will allow Sandler to bring back some of the range that was seen in SNL. That MerMan clip has 90s SNL all over it.
  • Who thinks Sandler sounds like Roger Rabbit in the Merman clip?
  • They should have done at least one of these in the traditional Apatow style with Sandler standing awkwardly against some sort of sunkist gradient background.
  • tom
Brilliant. This shit is brilliant. I love this movie hard already.
  • I wouldn't be surprised if Sandler actually did some of these movies haha. Not as awesome as "Yo teach..." but still pretty good.
  • that Sayonara Davey clip is hilarious. I would like to see that movie made.
  • All of these movies sound like ideas that Awesom-o came up with.
  • movieguzzler
I totally agree! "Sayonara Davey!" was pretty damn funny.
  • omg! "you help us open our eyes.... well, as far as they can open."! i would also totally see sayonara, dave.
  • 100% agree. I thought all of them were funny in the "wow these are so generic/real that it's scary," but I actually found Sayonara Davey to be genuinely funny.

Does that make me a bad person?
  • heh
Yeah I'm ashamed to say I would actually see Code Green, My Best Friend Is A Robot and Sayonara Davey.
  • hhaha good little chuckle at these, can't wait to see this movie, gonna be a different, smarter humour than hangover but hopefully delivers as many laughs
  • Those look to be all winners, sign me up.
  • astro-not sounded funny, just the title is so cheasy
  • The plot is almost the same as an old comedy called The Reluctant Astronaut, which involved a NASA janitor being sent into space. It starred Don Knotts, and the trailer labels him an "Astro-KNOTT" That must have been where they got the idea from.
  • I wonder how many people spray-painted "The Dog Dies" on billboards for Dog's Best Friend...
  • headmonkeys
Little by Little has my vote for most hilarious. Yay for trite, sentimental garbage!
  • what about "the champion"???
  • Sayonara Davey is the cream of the crop.
  • Jake
I would see almost all of these movies.
  • Will these appear in the actual movie?
  • haha gotta love viral marketing
  • Woow thank you
  • Twisted
Its' remind me an episode of South Park, when Cartman gives ideas for new movies to hollywood producers. Everyone of them has shitty plot like that with Adam Sandler as the main character. (Awesome-O, episode 802)
  • They... RAPED... Indiana Jones! And we just let it happen! We just ran away! :-)
  • erich
Why is it always written that Judd Apatow was FORCED to create some of these characters....

its not like someone put a gun to Apatow's head and said "CREATE NOW! WE MUST HAVE HILARIOUS VIRAL CLIPS TO PROMOTE YOUR MOVIE!!"
  • shouldn't "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" and "You Don't Mess With The Zohan" also be up there?
  • Honestly I love the guy, and I think this might be the movie that will bring him back. I mean the last few years haven't been good to him, the only decent movie since little nicky was click.
  • vva
The music in the background from Sayonara Davey! is from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story
  • Marko
I noticed that too! And I could be wrong, but is the music in Dog's Best Friend from an American Tail?
  • Gray McAdam
I love how, according to each poster, every movie co-stars Paul Rudd. Awesome.
  • Charles
Also, they're all written by Judd Apataow and Steve Carrell!
  • I wonder if working on "Funny People" made Sandler take a serious look at his career...

I mean, I'm no Sandler hater (in fact I like the guy) but these "movies" are meant to look purposefully crappy, and they STILL don't look that much worse than many of the projects he's been involved with in real life!
  • jason B
    astro-not is a brilliant title.
  • Adam Sandler is hilarious!
