Star Trek

In a previous video blog, we discussed the possibilities for the future of the Star Trek film franchise. One thing both Steve and I agreed on was that we’d like to see something completely new and different in the sequel, and not just a remake or reinvention of past storylines or events from the films/tv shows. Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman haven’t yet started writing the sequel (they will be joined by Damon Lindelof, and have  to hand in a draft by year’s end), but that won’t stop them from talking about the possibilities.

SciFiWire asked the duo if they were thinking of retelling an old story in a new way or planning to create a completely original story. Orci responded:

Well, that is the debate, literally. And that is going to be one of the first conversations that we have. But that’s exactly the question.

But whats more telling is that Orci says the “major lesson” they learned on the first film was that “fans were willing to accept differences and surprises, provided that they were somehow echoes or inspired by canon.”

We still have to be true to Star Trek the next time around, but we’ve also been blessed with being able to be unpredictable. And that doesn’t mean we can just be shocking for no good reason and just throw everything away. … It still has to echo everything that Star Trek has been.

Dicuss: Do you think the next Star Trek film should tell an entirely new adventure, or a reinvention of an old storyline (Khan and the Borg seem to be the most popular ideas)?

I am a real trekkie and I work for nasa and the goverment and I really enjoyed the movie not as a reboot but as a new telling of a different story. I feel they should go with new adventures that have little to do with the old ones. It would be pointless to repeat what we have all seen before and giving the crew of the new Enterprise different lives than the original cew would be perfect since it would allow them to be defined as new characters not just remakes of the old ones. I just hope they don't kill the franchise with this next movie and Roddenberry's dream of a bright future can live on forever.

I agree with new stories but I think they need to stay true to Gene Rodenberry's vision. Enterprise the TV series started out pretty good but then it became mired in convoluted storylines and less than good story telling, Voyager started off good and then it turned into the 7 of 9 show. I just want some good character driven stories from the sequels true to Gene's positive vision of the future.

And I also agree that they should not just remake old characters. And with the time loop their lives are different from the way we remember them and they could do it well.

I was thinking that a feature-length battle similar to "Balance of Terror" or perhaps against a machine like "The Doomsday Machine", only this time the thing actually makes it into Federation space, could keep viewers on the edge of their seats the whole time.

First off I was really pleased with this re-boot of the Star Trek franchise. The next must have a level of social commentary and be character driven. The dynamic of Vulcan being destroyed should be explored. A romulan Klingon alliance where the Romulans betrayed the Klingons or touch on the fact that the Romulans were not seen until the Balance of Terror episode in TOS.

Be bold be new but don't screw up the history.

I think the sequel should be a whole new story and adventure. Something that could have happened to the original crew in their original explorations. However, for the sake of homage to all those lovable characters that made Star Trek what it is, I would invite actors like Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes and others, or perhaps all the captains, to make a cameo appearance or even another character for the new movie. They are great actors after all and can do whatever they are asked to do.
  • Something epic, perhaps told over the course of a year in which we see the crew bond properly, an almost totally new story but with elements of old series episodes weaved in and out perhaps in montages in which we see how this version of the crew would have dealt with double Kirk, salt monsters and Harry Mudd. Though I suspect we'll see something how Vulcans deal with Pon Farr now that you know what happened.
  • As long as it has Tribbles in it I'm for it :D

The reboot was great, in every way an almost typical Star Trek storyline. I think they should keep on with new stories and leave Khan sleeping away the centuries onboard the botany Bay, where he should be at this juncture...... Some new enemy dark and terrible, malevolent and murderous, powerful and terrifying....
  • I'm a big disappointed that a usually reputable site like Slashfilm.com still hasn't corrected this error. It's Star Trek 12, not Star Trek 2.
  • They should definatly do something original, add some new alien race ,completly flip the script. Boldy go where no man has gone before literally!
  • ziggi
i wouldnt be surprised if all they do with each new movie
is create a game scenario where the story arch is nothing
more than a path to do canon winks and high fives in
different ways to trekkies or trekers or w/e they're called.

New Story. No Khan no Shatner.
  • If they want to continue this franchise well beyond 1 or two films I think if they should hold off on Khan and the Borg for later runs. I'd like to see some more original stories inbetween such popular elements of the series. That's just my take and I think it would keep it fresh and hell even through in some popular original series elements thrown.

    Star Trek XII.

Star Trek 2 came out in 1982. 27 years ago. Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof had nothing to do with it. It was made by nick Meyer.

Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof are currently working on Star Trek XII.

    Don't be confused.
  • One thing I'm already loving on Grant Morrison's Batman & Robin is that he's creating practically all new villains that feel like they could have been Batman villains all along. I'd like to see them do the same with Star Trek.
  • I say they go with original ideas as well with combining elements from stories in TOS. I honestly think thats the best path to take.
  • They did enough fan service in the first one... now that they are free to do whatever they want I can only hope it's something original... It would be kind of a waste to see them re-hash the old with a slightly different outcome.
  • Lawdog
They reset the characters, not the universe...except for Vulcan. All of the same antagonists are still out there. Kirk and Khan are no longer mortal enemies, but they're both still around. I hope they leave Khan be though, at least for a little while. The introduction of the Klingons seems like the most logical choice for the next film. I just hope they get the Klingon language right so we don't have to put up with all the hand wringing from all those people who decided to learn Klingon.

    KLINGONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Naatz
I would like to see some major shifts in galactic politics, with the vulcans nearly wiped out, the federation would need some new strong members, why not the klingons? Or have them use the situation and attack the federation, as they are engaged in a cold war.
  • RPK
They got away with using the weak plot mechanic of time travel in Star Trek because of the main attraction of the re-introduction of the main cast.

Now, hopefully they will put some effort into making a villain that will carry the movie.

IMO, a movie can only truly be great if both sides/ Yin and Yang/ Good and Evil are represented to its fullest extent. In fact, I think if you have a strong enough villain, it can mask a weak main character ex: (Star Wars, The Matrix)

But my main hope is that they leave the time travel out of the next one. It's been beaten to death time and time again.
  • I have a feeling that it'll involve time travel, some sort of demon made of dark polluted air, and a landmass surrounded entirely by water.

Get it! Just like in Cloverfield!
  • Andy
I thought you meant Felicity until I saw the part about the water. Well played.
  • Donald Duck
I thought he meant LOST, with Lindelof, timetravel and all.
  • jason B
they need to push themselves hard enough to create this new imaginings 'khan': an entirely new species/villian that carries just as much gravity as khan did. every bit as deadly, every bit as important, every bit as legendary.

the main problem i see, is that this is a very 'light' universe they created - yes there were deaths, but for some reason i didn't get the feeling of fear that WOK gave off.
  • One more thing; bring back Q!
  • What a fantastic idea! It never occurred to me until you said it but now I'd love to see Kirk & his crew have it out with Q.
  • machoo
good call!!! cameo some TNG actors maybe... but he can travel different timelines
  • mchoo
also would be a way to work in shatner for a cameo
  • If these movies don't boldly go where no Star Trek has gone before then what will?
  • I think they should remake WRATH OF KHAN shot for shot...not really....I just wanted to be the first to say so after 15 or so comments.
  • I think they should remake WRATH OF KHAN shot for shot...not really...I just wanted to be the first to say so have 15 or so responses.
  • To me I think this new Stark Trek franchise should be really great, but not try to over do it at the same time.
  • Ok you did your fan service now make the series your own. The script for the first one didn't live up to the awesome cast and direction. (lens flares aside) They need to really try to step it up the second time around. This is not a Transformers movie the script needs to be more than that. New storylines you guys don't owe anyone but fans of the original movie, not fans of the series or the old films. This is a new a different Star Trek give us something we haven't seen.
  • I say be brave...be original. We just don't need another film that uses an already tried and true plot line or character arc no matter what kind of spin they put on it. You can use Klingons, use Romulans... hell have the Klingons and Romulans get into a galactic war and beat the living shit out of each other and the Enterprise and the Federation try to stay out of it and yet get pulled in. Hell, make subtle political or social statements like Roddenberry and the crew did in TOS that will go way over an average audience member's head but reaches out to those keeping their eyes open (critics and real Trekkies who don't live in their mother's basement love that shit). BUT have somebody really evil pulling the strings--a new BIG BAD (and not someone with Godlike powers)...someone like, dare I say it, a Ben Linus of the Star Trek universe. Yeah, okay...cast Michael Emerson. There I said it. I'll shut up now.

    I say be brave...be original ?????????

    It's a remake man ...
  • Paul Blart Mall Cop
Maybe in the next movie they can do a little better then having so many inconsistencies, very convenient meetings, outrageous coincidences, and poor story logic.
  • and maybe you'll actually be funny. But I think that might be a stretch.
  • Mumbles
Don't care as long as the villain is awesome and the plot makes sense.

Unlike the first one in this reboot.
  • They'll pull out the Klingongs. They are known amongst the populace at large and weren't in the first one.
  • I say original as well with combining elements from the original stories from TOS. I honestly think thats the best path to go down by.
  • They should do something original for the next one, but definitely pepper in set ups for later confrontations with Khan, etc. The current Star Trek was so good it made me want to see the Khan and Spock stories retold- at some point they have to confront Kirk with his refusal to accept death, as in the original movies. Do something original then pump us up with a Khan setup at the end of #2!!!
  • Andrew
Khan would be too ambitious I think. "Wrath of Khan" is widely accepted as the best of the original Star Trek films and might collapse under its own expectations. I would not be averse to the idea, but it would be tough to pull off (which is what some said about Abrams's Trek anyway).

There were definite hints that the Klingons would play a role at some point, if nothing else because of their absense in the first film.
  • ya something original, different villains, few new faces, maybe a few old faces, whatever, they do however have their work cut out for them if they want to make as good a movie as the first.
  • Isaac
I throughly enjoyed the revamp of Star Trek, but I feel that the only way the next film would work is if a completely new story was told (granted, including the surviving species of the Star Trek universe). Wasn't that the whole point of creating an alternate/parallel time line in the first place?
