Update: /Film commenter, Infrafan, points out that a “snowbound” setting opens up the following scenario: Jason finds himself on a frozen lake. Jason then “plays hockey” with the decapitated head of an AXE body spray model or a fake breast. Knowing Platinum Dunes, we could actually see this happening.

Even though last February’s Friday the 13th opened to $44 million domestic but failed to crack the $100m milestone due to underwhelming word-of-mouth and stunted effort to make a definitive and fun entry, Platinum Dunes made a killing on the $16 million budget. Semi-good news: The horror company’s go-to director Marcus Nispel will not be back for the previously announced sequel. Uber-bad news: Unfortunately, Nispel will take his exhausted MTV-metallic sheen and ridiculously back-lit atmospherics to Conan instead. Ryan Rotten at STYD spoke recently with PD producer, Brad Fuller, who felt the need to fess up to fans’ criticisms of the first film and reveal the “hook” for the sequel.

Fuller says that PD wants to give audiences something they’ve never seen before, and teases that next go around, Jason Voorhees will appear “in the snow.” Not a terrible concept. I always thought that Jason Takes Manhattan should have capitalized on traditionally cruel winters in the city. However, he adds that the entire move will not take place in a snowbound setting. Figuring out how to get girls out of their clothes out of doors—even to make drunken snow angels—would just be too hard and time-consuming for PD. And what of fans’ outcries that the killings were by-the-numbers at best, lame in general? Fuller says, “That’s a criticism goes to my heart. I feel I failed the fans in that those kills were not original enough.” Unlikely Spoiler Alert: Platinum Dunes has a heart!

PD producer, Andrew Form, also addressed rumors that the sequel will go 3D to CHUD: “But I mean from day one when we started talking about the sequel we talked about it being in 3-D.” That said, Fuller seems to feel that there isn’t enough time to convert the film to 3D to meet its scheduled release next summer.

    Ugh, enough.

I really have to confess that the first one was enjoyable. It's a hack character with a hack concept (pun intended) but I thought the goofs, chases and girls were all I expected from a Friday the 13th movie. And c'mon that sleeping bag scene was badass.
  • Ghad
    disappointing?

It was far better than the majority of the Friday movies. Id say its in the top 3 at least.
  • The
^This. Quite honestly, most Friday the 13th movies suck... Remeber that one movie with the mentally ill home? Or Manhattan? Or Space? Or the movie where Jason gets killed and then we watch other people kill people?

They need to try something *really* new. Like, enough kids camping and Jason kills them. Put Jason in a completely different situation... like him getting captured and escaping a military base and killing every single person who gets in his way. Or try something like Danny the Dog where some rich guy tries to tame Jason to become the ultimate killing weapon! I'm just brain farting here but still... you get the point. New. Yah...
  • I kinda enjoyed it as well. I have a soft spot in my heart for slasher movies. There could have been more inventive kills and maybe something that seperated this movie from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake but this interview really gives me hope. They also admitted in the interview they cancelled the remake of Rosemary's Baby (Yes!) and that they were having trouble with the script for The Birds remake because guess what? All birds can do is peck and claw. Apparently it took attempting to write a script for them to figure that out
  • Please don't butcher The Birds. Snowbound... could be fun!
  • I dug the new Friday the 13th a lot in the first act--basically everything that happened with the first set of characters--but man, did it ever start to slowly fall apart from there. Some of the kills weren't bad, but they weren't exceptional. Some of the characters were a little more interesting than those in previous films, but not enough to be memorable. And basically the last act was god awful, especially that insanely stupid ending. That just really left a bad taste in my mouth about the whole project.

Still, I have a special place in my heart for the Friday the 13th films, and I liked how this one, at least at first, tried to be fair to the mythology of the series. If the producers really did learn their lessons from the first reboot, a sequel might be very entertaining.
  • The
I totally agree! I loved the first 20 minutes and those characters and was sad that we had to transition to a completely separate set of people.
  • Hmm, if the first attempt to reboot a franchise that already has 10 films and one spin-off fails, why not just call it a day and come up with something remotely original....
  • um... 42 mil opening weekend for a 16 million dollar movie - that's why not.

That said - yes, original content please!
  • jason B
yes...enough already because lemme tell you : 3D ain't gonna fix shite!

“That’s a criticism goes to my heart. I feel I failed the fans in that those kills were not original enough.”

    Yeah, okay.

Is it so hard to produce a slasher film that lacks potheads, tits, sex, dumb cop, and a token black guy? The first film was basically Horror Film Trope: The Movie.

And for the love of god, keep Nispel away from Conan. Hire an actual director. Agh.
  • They never said it was "disappointing" Hunter. Oh but if Rob Zombie made it and starred Danny McBride you would probably say "Yaa like totally it rocked I can' wait for the sequel. It was totally about God and why religion is bad and if you don't agree with that then you're just a corporate tool" Jesus Christ, man.
  • You are a fucking diary thief.
  • Goddamit...thumbs up to you.
  • Horrible movie. Platinum Dunes should be ashamed of themselves for selling their souls and making another Friday the 13th.
  • just watched the killer cut, itsucked........hahahaha at diary thief
  • just watched the killer cut, it sucked........hahahaha at diary thief
  • alex
Kane Hodder. More visceral deaths (but no spears, etc.). More "reboot" less "Superman Returns".

    I say good-day sir!
  • Dan
My idea to bring some originality to this series is to send Jason to Washington, or Wall Street, or maybe even Hollywood? Send him somewhere where he can actually be useful for a change. LOL!
  • musicsoup
why use the friday the 13th name at all? why not make an original slasher film called snowbound? don't make it about a bunch of ski instructors getting hacked up. make it more something like the decent, but in the snowy world of extreme mountain climbing. that idea sells itself. create a new killer, but don't cast a member of the WWE. or don't even make it a slasher film, just make it something original. why not? just don't make it dumb.

i feel like these guys actually read what gets written online. so, i assume they may read these talkbacks. that idea's mine.
  • Infrafan
With that hockey stick joke in the last one, will they fight the urge to actually put Jason on the ice playing hockey and making a kill with his skates.
  • Jakeson
Jesus, that's totally going to happen, isn't it?
  • Happy_Evil_Dude
Um, Hunter: when talk about Andrew Fuller at the end of the post, you're either still talking about Brad Fuller or you've started talking about Andrew Form...cause there ain't no Fuller/Form mutated organism that I know of.
  • @Infrafan

Nice observation. I'll add to the post. @Jakeson I share your paranoia. This IS going to happen.

    @Happy_Evil_Dude

FYI From Wikipedia: "Platinum Dunes is a skin-grafted entity/horror production house pock-marked by lost souls and money hungry producers. Due to typical lethargy, the PD entity occasionally releases statements to the press as such." I will correct this once.
  • Infrafan
LOL. I had to have a friend point it out to me that you used my suggestion as you share my opinion. Thanks for using it.
  • KrazyJoe
The next one better be called 'Friday the 13th Part 13', since that is what it will in fact be.

The last one was NOT a remake. It was just another sequel.
  • ElectrocaineXxX
You know what happens to great, original horror flicks? They get dropped, shuffled around and end up going straight to DVD. You know what I'm talking about; Trick r' Treat.
  • The remake had bigger problems than a lack of inventive kills--namely, an incoherent plot and a general lack of real scariness or atmosphere. I posted a full review on my site.
  • Nik
As much as I hated the remake, I still am looking forward to the sequel. I've always wanted Jason in the snow.
