Inception Has $200 Million Budget?

inception casting

When the project was first announced, most people assumed that Inception would be a smaller film that Christopher Nolan would film before returning to make a third Batman film. But with a budget of over $200 million (or possibly $178 Million if the initial number is Canadian dollars) , the film isn’t looking so small after all.

This according to The Calgary Sun, who also claims that the psychological thriller will be filming in five different countries, including a “significant portion” in Kananaskis, Alberta (a rural district situated to the west of Calgary in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies). Apparently Nolan visited Canada twice scouting locations, looking at nearby foothills and mountainous areas by helicopter before choosing Fortress Mountain as the main Alberta location. The newspaper insists that the location shooting will be significant, employing hundreds, if not thousands, of local film workers beginning this Summer when construction on an “elaborate set” is scheduled to begin.

The plot is being kept under lock and key. MTV recently asked Joseph Gordon-Levitt to talk about the movie, and the star reluctantly responded:

Here’s the thing… I cant wait to talk to you about [Inception] but I’ve been very specifically asked not to talk about it. I want to respect [director Chris Nolan's wishes] because I love his movies and I’m so honored and grateful to be working with him. He’s got a really specific idea and way he wants people to be presented with this thing.

All we know about the story so far is that the movie is a contemporary science fiction action movie “set within the architecture of the mind.” Leonardo DiCaprio plays the lead, a CEO-type, Marion Cotillard (La Vie en rose, Public Enemies) is his wife, Ellen Page (Juno) is a young college grad student and DiCaprio’s sidekick, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays an associate working for DiCaprio. Ken Watanabe will play the film’s villain, a man who is blackmailing Leonardo DiCaprio’s character. Tom Hardy (Bronson) is a member of DiCaprio’s team. Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Sunshine) and Michael Caine are also signed on, but no details are known about their characters.

Inception will begin production this summer, and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 16th 2010.

  • Umm, Batman 3 anyone?...

Although TDK had a $185mil budget. I'd think the next Batman would have a much higher budget maybe around $300mil.
  • Actually I think TDK was the most overrated film of 2008.
  • smither
    im sorry...
  • Why would they be shooting in so many countries? Gotham is entirely shot in Chicago and any Batman film almost -has- to be shot 75-80% there. I mean, yeah the first two films had quite a bit of Asia in them but if they are scouting Canada and 4 other countries, it cannot possibly be Batman 3.

Oh. And let's look at the cast. Ken Watanabe died in Batman Begins. Michael Caine has said repeatedly that his character has a very small role and would require only a day or two of shooting (Alfred is in probably 40-50% of TDK for comparison). Just those two right there make it insane to think that this is Batman 3. Not to mention having two actors commanding somewhere in the $20 million range isn't financially feasible especially given that much of the hype surrounding TDK and much of the reason it had such a huge opening weekend was because of Ledger's death. They don't have that this time around. Batman 3 will be huge but I don't think it could possibly top TDK financially.

So can we please stop saying this is Batman 3? It isn't. Nolan is allowed to film other things. His two best movies, in my opinion, weren't even Batman. They were Memento and the movie he filmed between Batman Begins and TDK - The Prestige.

EDIT: Forgot to point out that with the cast, why bring in so many more actors? Leo could play the villain, sure. But Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt? There's no need for them. You already have Gary Oldman, you already have Richard Alpert as the mayor, you already have Morgan Freeman. Combining this cast with the cast from TDK would put the budgets for salaries alone above $100 million. That isn't exactly something movie execs would want.

well done Josh i hate people think this is Batman 3 its just another movie that Nolan is doing you stated great points why it aint a sequel to Batman these so called fanboys need to STFU sometimes
  • shatner
you retard! this is not a sequel to batman!!! this a complete independant movie about scienece fiction! Nolan has made great movies which are not related to batman you know! Jeez retards these days! Oh well go see star trek dipshit!
  • I'm going to assume you meant to post this under the original poster and not myself. Either way though... you're the dipshit here. You don't go around calling people "retards". You don't put an exclamation point at the end of each sentence either.

Oh and suggesting that someone go see Star Trek being used as an insult? You either are a Star Wars nerd afraid to admit that this new Star Trek film is the best Star Trek or Star Wars film in a few decades or you are a Trekkie/Trekker who is desperately trying to hold on to the past.

Go troll somewhere else. Coherent and well thought out comments are one of the cornerstones of this great site. Don't ruin that.
  • Ben
I'll definately agree with Momento. His best movie IMO also, but I felt that Dark Knight was better than Prestige. All his movies have been great though.
  • Half of it is probably just for this ensemble cast.
  • Lpfanaddy
haha my thoughts exactly. that type of A-list cast can't come all that cheap, although I think a few of them would do it somewhat cheaper just to work with Nolan.
  • It can if the actors are very excited to work with a certain director. Actors will always take a pay cut if they admire the work of a director. It happens all the time.
  • There's no point in such high budgets. TDK was made perfectly with that budget, why would you need so much more?
  • terry
this has nothing to do with Batman 3 its just another freaking movie that Chris Nolan is doing so stop acting like a fanboy
  • DonPablito
Well, it could be Batman 3... Caine and Murphy may be acting their former parts, Marion Cotillard could have been casted to replace Maggie Gyllenhaal... And Gordon-Levitt has some considerable similarities to... Heath Ledger.
  • I love Batman and what Nolan has done with it. But you fanatics need to let this shit go. It's "another" movie by Nolan that isn't Batman.
  • DonPablito
Probably you're right. I just remembered "Intimidation Game" and went overboard. Sorry.
  • No need for an apology. But people need to understand that Nolan (or any director) doesn't want to overload themselves with one franchise idea. Luckily WB has been amazing with him and have allowed him to take these one-movie breaks in between Batman films.

I wish more studios did this than burn directors out when they've made studios a "good thing".
  • now youre just coming off as dumb.
  • Please read my above post. I'm 100% sure that this isn't a new Batman.

  • luke_test
There was a tweet on twitter (of course) where someone was trying to work on the film (also mentioned about shooting in Canada). They said it had a $150m budget.
  • TheDev
I'm guessing by people's dumb comments about this being a TDK follow-up, that makes The Prestige Batman 1.5, right?

Wake up people. It's been said time and time again that Inception was going to be Nolan's next project and just because there are similar cast member's to Nolan's Batman franchise, does not mean that this is the next film in the series.
  • I guess once you go big budget you can't go back.
  • Hell yes, this needs to come out. Now. Cannot wait...I'd watch a piece of shit float in a toilet if Nolan directed it.
  • It's funny as hell and yet I can't find any flaw with this logic.
  • jayjay
hell yes can not wait for this movie!
  • I can't wait for this movie! Gotta love that JGL respects Nolan enough not to divulge any info. He probably doesn't have any to give MTV anyway...
  • Egger Buckland
This is so, so sad. Is no one excited about the movie that's actually being made? Batman 3 is just an inevitability that's bound to disappoint.
  • And the same was said about TDK after Batman Begins became a cult hit. They couldn't possibly top Batman Begins. TDK did top it, however
  • shatner
    retard! itsa different film!
  • shatner
Don't you twats fink that if it was a batman movie then oldman and bale would be listed!!!!
  • Seriously... stop posting. =\\
  • Seriously... stop posting. =/
  • Who gives a shit about Batman 3? Everything else Chris Nolan has done besides Batman has been gold. I'd actually rather see a normal Nolan film than Batman 3. And thankfully, since TDK made a bajillion bucks, he'll likely have a LOT of creative control over this, which is a good thing for him; just look at Following or Memento.
  • WOW I am pumped for this and it is sad that people are trying their hardest to mentally look past this movie and to convince themselves Nolan is doing a Batman film. Lets get excited for Inception guys! I know of the Batman films didn't exsist we would still be talking about this with Memento and The Prestige. But this movie just looks like gold and I have a lot of convidence in WB that they will let Nolan do what he wants with the budget he wants. We need more of this in Hollywood so again lets get excited for this!
  • More than likely, any talks regarding the third Batman movie wouldn't even start until sometime next year. Outside of acutally budgeting the thing (which many of you have noted would skyrocket based on cast alone), the script has definitely been put on the backburner in lieu of Inception and the time commitment for production.

Plus, did anyone forget that Chris Nolan's brother is in custody for homicide? I think a pressing family matter might take precedence of one's free time beyond a Hollywood career that is is no danger of fading away.
  • Dvq
“set within the architecture of the mind.” im fing tired of reading that! i want more info! :(
  • JoShmo
LMAO me too! As soon as he said "All we know about the story so far..." I knew that damn "architecture of the mind shit was gonna follow. I like not knowing much about the movie tho. Maybe just a little bit more.
  • This is fascinating. Nolan brought Dark Knight in under budget by 20 million making one of the largest and most epic superhero films for under 200 million. Now he turns around and is making a completely new story in the Nolan way(see Prestige) and has a budget of 200 million? What does Nolan have in store for us. He's already established himself as an amazing story teller that doesn't need an astronomic budget to convey it(see James Cameron). Nolan is making us hate him right now with all the secrecy but we will love him for it.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Big budget sci-fi. He already has amazing clout, but if successful with this film, Nolan will be well positioned to be the heir apparent to some of the aging bigs in the industry.

As example, Spielberg was hot stuff before Close Encounters, but after that hit, he had pretty much carte blanche to do whatever he wanted.

No reason he can't still make small films, but if he continues to steamroll with the big stuff, he will have an amazing safety net.
  • Cant wait
  • drbenway
What the fuck are you talking about?
  • NolanFans.com is reporting that the other 5 locations mentioned in this article are: Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, Paris, and Tangiers (Morocco)

    Sounds amazing.
  • Cannot wait for this film, Nolan is great, top ten directors at the moment for sure, i guess since he has such a huge following now, especially after tdk, he can get whatever budget he wants, pumped
  • Sara
I can't wait for this movie. It will be exciting to see some of these actors work together for the first time. Nolan is amazing.
  • OnuRC
I think Nolan is best director of 2000's
  • Sweetness
This is great. Nolan is the only man these days doing smart summer blockbusters. Can't wait for this film. He must have something awesome in mind.
  • Nolan's easily the best mainstream director these days; especially now that Steven Spielberg has drifted into irrelevancy. I would like to see him do a gritty, low-budget film again because he was so good at them.

Ditto the sentiment that Inception has an amazing cast.
  • Way excited for this movie.......except for Ellen Page.
  • She's awesome.
  • She's awesome in Hard Candy. Great actress.
