A Russian report (spoilery English version here) quotes director Timur Bekmambetov saying that he’s about to start preparation for Wanted 2, and that the film could shoot in late autumn or winter. He also says that Fox, Angelina Jolie’s character, will be back. (Played by her, or someone else?) Which is a bit…surprising. More (including spoilers for Wanted) after the jump.

OK, so it’s not entirely surprising. Yes, Jolie died at the end of Wanted. Yet as Peter recently noted, the Wanted video game, which was created with express involvement of the film’s producers, mentions that Fox’s body was missing, possibly suggesting that she’d escaped. That previously seemed like over-thinking, but who knows?

According to the LA Times Fox’s death was a decision that rested solely on Jolie’s shoulders. “In the original, she doesn’t kill herself,” Jolie said. “I actually changed the ending. I said, ‘If she was to find out she had killed people unjustly and was a part of something that wasn’t fair, then she should take her own life.’” So the idea that Jolie will return in the role, no matter what new writer Evan Spiliotopoulos writes for the second film, is perhaps far-fetched.

Original comic series writer Mark Millar has defended Spiliotopoulos, who replaced Wanted screenwriter Chris Morgan on the sequel, but hasn’t said much about where this new script is going. Material from the third and fourth issues of Millar’s six-issue series didn’t make it into the movie, and he previously suggested that might be incorporated into Wanted 2. Bekmambetov also said in the current report that Kostya Khabenskiy could also be resurrected. What about Morgan Freeman? Hopefully not, as his final moment was too memorable to undo.

Still, I’ve got no enthusiasm for this one. Wanted had some great, silly action, but the end left me furious in a way that surprised even me. I don’t get perturbed by the tone of most violent and/or action movies, but the whole urge to pass on violence as a solution to your lame life problems left me wanting to punch Bekbambetov in the face. I almost relished that feeling, since it’s rare that I get so lathered up over a movie as inconsequential as this one.

Discuss: Is the return of Fox a terrible idea, or a perfect fit for the absurd Wanted universe?

  • Not really surprised, stuff like this is normal in the comic book world these days so, if they can do it correctly then yeah I can see it working. But her death scene was epic though.
  • ...
    Her Death scene was epic...
so wouldn't it kind of ruin it if she were to magiclly appear in the sequel?
Not that I'd hate another action movie with Jolie in it...
but really? They couldn't come up with some better ideas?
This is the dude who made Night Watch...
    ...
  • i hope she does return. Love her.

Bekhambetov didn't come up with the concept of violence in Wanted. Better to save your anger for those guys who wrote the graphic novel.
  • I read some of the comic after seeing the film, and yeah, a bunch of those ideas were Millar's. But the movie version actively bugged me, while the comic version just seemed goofy and dismissable. Not saying it's a rational response, but the movie angered me in a way the comic has no power to.

i was just about to cut and paste the exact same quote of russ's...however i fully agree with what he said. millar AND timur chose to present the 'violent solution', and in fact the comic has moments where the wesley character rapes women and even then he faces zero consequences.

but for some reason i can let the book pass, while i was completely irritated with the film. mostly because they chose to ignore the book almost entirely.
  • you need to read more of the comic man. he rapes and murders innocent people for shits and giggles. these acts are absolutely in no way related to the "kill one, save a thousand" principle in the movie. it's not very goofy or dismissible.
  • JoShmo
This movie was shit IMO. Seriously the "loom of fate" tells you who to kill? Seriously? And how exactly are they gonna put her brain back in her head effectively enough to have her in the sequel?
  • Brian Rodden
Wanted absolutely sucked. I can't believe it did enough business to get a sequel.
  • It's not very easy... to take out the bullet in the brain, Mr. Bekmambetov...

"but the end left me furious in a way that surprised even me."

    This is hilarious.
  • Ben
Im still upset I had to see Wanted when I wanted to see the Incredible Hulk.
  • Jimmy Mac
I really enjoyed it. Go me.

You know what would be a wierd twist? If Halley Berry Came back and playing the Angelina role. Why is that a twist? Because in the Orginal Graphic Novel by Mark Millar, the Charector was Called Fox(based on Catwoman actually) and Was Modeled AFTER Hally Berry. So would be Art. Imitating .. err Art
  • I actualy enjoyed wanted...not a very good movie...but it was entertaining enough and had a few secenes that saved the movie for me...I don't really care about it much so I wasn't as furious as you Mr. Fischer. If I had cared more about it (IE: Deadpool, etc) then that'd be a completely different story.

One thing though...this movie shouldn't be called Wanted at all....at least not in the sense of it being based off of Millar's graphic novel because this movie seriously isn't even remotely close to the GN. Not saying that is bad...because I actually kind of like the more realistic univerise that the movie was based in. The GN is soooooo completely out there. Wanted the GN is definitely a completely unique comic book universe, and it's pretty cool, but I think it'd be impossible to pull off a movie version closely based on it. Especially since it doesn't have a long running foundation like Marvel for instance. I doubt it'd gain any type of audience if it was like the books...but then again...Hellboy was/is successful so I may be wrong....but Wanted is even more out there than Hellboy.

  • She'll most likely return in the way that wax bath thing worked. I think Wesley will take her body there and hope that it heals her wounds and which it probably will, she'll be back.
  • freemachine
I think the wax is designed to heal mortal wounds when the person is still alive. Jolie had her brains blown out, which pretty much ensures that she's dead. If those wax baths have resurrection properties then you are gonna have a lot of pissed off rats running about.
  • I was just giving a slightly reasonable way for the writers to figure out a way for her character to come back. I mean how else are they suppose to explain how she comes back after being shot in the head?
  • The reason Wanted doesn't resemble the graphic novel is because Universal only bought the rights to the first issue in the comic series so not only did the screen writers they hired have no clue how Mark Millar's story ended, they weren't really sure what the next step was. I would love to see a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel but I guess it's hard to make a movie in which your main character rapes someone and it's presented as a good thing. lol

Without ever hearing of the comic books this movie was based on, I really enjoyed Wanted. I thought it was a good movie, with amazing graphics and special effects and interesting enough surprises and plot twists. That being said, obviously no movie is without its faults, but Wanted was thrilling, exciting, and overall definitely worth it.
  • I loved "Wanted" for it's unapolagetic ridiculousness. No idea what the graphic novel was like. Don't care. I loved this movie.

That said, Fox is dead. She should stay that way. She had her epic death- it was meaningful and complete. Bringing her back is cheating. The only way I could bring myself to care is if she spends half the movie angsting over the fact that "she should have been dead." At least that would justify it dramatically... sort of. :/
  • comic yes, movie no
  • Haha. "In the original, she doesn't kill herself".

Like anything in the film remotely resembles the comics. Which are also not very good.
  • 790
These producers are ball-less losers that have 0 faith in the casting process.

Oh yes Jolie must be back then we won't have to write a new character or even a good script.

    Fricken lame...
    Who cares about Wanted anyway.
  • dagreenman18
No, stay dead. It would be retarded to bring he back, especially when the bullet went THROUGH HER HEAD!
  • It is easy to bring her back and have it seem logical. The bullet went through her cellebellum (brain), but didn't kill her. She was rescued and left in a coma for a few years. She has no memory of her past and it is her who has to discover who she is and that is where she meets up with our hero.
  • For a second there, I thought you were going to tell us the way the Bride came back from the Kill Bill films.
  • [A]
Wanted was crap. Just like the comics. Utter crap.
  • Feral

THAT PICTURE IS MAKING ME POOP MYSELF WITH FEAR!! WHERE ARE HER EYES!?!?!? WHERE ARE HER EYES!!!
  • deathmetalhero
they should just make a movie called Wanted 2:Angelina Jolie naked for an hour and a half and shooting guns. The only plot is that she is traveling from California to my mom's basement to see who wrote this comment on /film, she kills tons of people, and then we make out furiously. The end.
  • The whole movie was absurd with the "The Loom of Fate", the curved bullets, head shots galore. Why are you going to have her back? She was supposed to die? Everybody was supposed to die, except for Wesley. This is a bad idea.
  • hah
I liked Wanted, it was probably one of my top action films that I like. What I don't get is why people always harp on mindless action movies... why? Do you really want to watch movies with no action or realistic action in it all the time? Movie critics shouldn't even be allowed to review action movies cause its the same crappy review after review. Compare them to other action movies or similar movies. Either way, if they bring her character back I will probably be disappointed, that or they will need to find a very clever way to bring her back, maybe flash backs or something.
  • hah
"The whole movie was absurd with the "The Loom of Fate", the curved bullets, head shots galore."

so....whats your point? Does every movie have to be "realistic", or not be far fetched with its action? Why does it have to be "absurd"? Because you are a movie snob who thinks that its not Grade A content because it couldn't happen that way? If they make a sequel then it will have to be pretty well thought out, but seriously I get tired to people dissing action movies. Would you rather watch The Color Purple or Rambo in the theatre? Drama movies and serious movies are awesome, but sometimes I just want to watch S*** blow up.... LOUD.
  • cindy
She should return because she is the only reason the first wanted movie was so damn good, she was awesome and she kicked ass. :)

Any chance that the long rich Brangelina will FINALLY show some nerve
and instead of making photo-op nice with the photogenic third world
---will START confronting the reality of Hollywood and media being
utterly sold out to the most awesomely genocidal regime in human history
    ---across the Pacific! ABSOLUTE FACT

--That number is now 70,000,000 murdered in 'peacetime'--
    ABSOLUTE FACT

70 million that you won't be hearing so much as a peep about
from the suck-up, sold-out and enabling American Hollywoood and media.

-And DON'T accept any of the tut-tuts and downsizings that are routinely
dished out. 70 million is the very latest accepted scholarly estimate
of what's gone on and is STILL going on.

NOW ---back to your comfort-zone circle-jerk fantasies.
