    George Lucas FAIL haha!

Sorry guys but I have a question not related to this. Can anyone please tell me what indie film that had regular people dressing as "Famous" people on a Island?! I believe it came out last year. I cant remember the name at all =/
  • Dewinter
    Mister Lonely perhaps?
  • matt
    Yes! Thanks a ton!
  • Infrafan
That Michael Cera quote saddens me.

How 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days made that foreign film release list and then managed to make it in the middle is ridiculous. That film has been highly overrated. Taking a film that might have worked as a short film, stretching it to over double it's workable length, then putting in excruciatingly long shots of the characters just walking from place to place MORE THAN ONCE is insane.

I love how Wes Craven has both The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and To Kill A Mockingbird on the same list. lol. That's Wes Craven for you. Love it.

Seeing a director edit a film for a beloved franchise for Pixar and Disney on a plane is incredible.

And that very cool 360 panoramic shot of the landscape on the District 9 website is fun. Love to see more done with that.
  • Ok, before I get lynched for what I'm about to say. Episode I and II were unbearable. More so Episode I. Episode III while not near great, was tolerable.

Said it. THAT said...I really think the guy gets too much flack. As Craigsaorusrex said, he did bring us ILM and brought us one of the most memorable sci fi films of all time. He needs to stop milking it, thats for sure...but come on, the Star Wars fan in me still wants to cheer him on.

Other than that, Peter, I have to disagree with you on the Hurt Locker. I saw a screening for it, and that poster really doesn't display the type of movie it is. It's a drama, a good one, but no action film.
  • Vinyard
I agree regarding [your comments on] Lucas and the SW prequels. In terms of Lucas' mark on cinema, he's been seminal. He also has some decent ideas and notions about where cinema is headed; after all, he has made some $3 billion from the industry.
But he should've never been the one to direct the prequels. And the green-screen work on the prequels was meant to "progress" cinema, but ended up retarding CG-heavy cinema greatly.
Lucas deserves criticism regarding his filmmaking - but I think it's better for both the viewers and Lucas himself if it's constructive and proactive.
  • Amen, you nailed it.
  • CyT
Theres no denying how much influence Lucas has had on the film industry. Im about 3/4 of the way through "The Complete Making of Indiana Jones: The Definitive Story Behind All Four Films" (which you should buy if you love the films as it is so in depth as to be breath taking) but you get the very real sense that George hates making movies. He is always depressed and lying down tired or sick on movie sets. He is a business man through and through. The deals he has done in the film world and the companies he has created have benefited us all, but he should stay away from story and cameras, as he really has ruined 2 special things in the last decade. Namely Star Wars and Indiana Jones and that really is a horrible thing worthy of flack giving.

  • DAMN YOU MICHAEL CERA! YOU CRUSH MY HEART AGAIN!

On the lighter side, that Lucas pic is fantastic
  • After i heard about the Real Life Final Destination story i was like WTF.. So creepy
  • That final destination story gave me shivers....

And why is the George Lucas picture so "sad"? I don't get it, he went from Amazing special effects in late 70s and 80s to Amazing special effects in the 00s...whats so "sad" about that?
  • That Star Trek video was gorgeously rendered.
  • Bill
    Indeed! Very awesome.
  • HelloJackToad
That "Sad" George Lucas pic is editorialized bullshit. Anyone that has watched the making of featurettes on the prequel DVD's will know that plenty of models and miniatures were used as well as CGI. In fact, there's a proper 2005 alternative to that 1983 picture to be found inside a 'making of Revenge of the Sith' book that shows Lucas surrounded by hundreds of the creatures and vehicles featured in that movie. This is just populist nerd crap, where you make this man out to be the devil, when really all he did was make three movies you didn't enjoy. Idiots.
  • I was pro Lucas untill recently when I read a letter by him in Empire's 20th anniversary edition. Only then did I realize how focused he is on technology over everything else. And now I simply don't bother with him.
  • CyT
That letter from him made me lose the last bit of respect aswell. He has really lost the golden treasure of film: To make a movie that people will enjoy. He is just a businessman now and only concerned with new conquests and power. So sad. I really hope he is not involved on any more Star Wars or Indy films, but at the same time I really want there to be be more Indy and Star Wars films!
  • adE
still gutted that Alexander Skarsgard didnt get thor - dude was the bomb in generation kill
  • love the star trek short!
  • The fact that Let the Right One In is only 22 on the list is blasphemous. It is the single best film of the decade. The decade I tell you. I look forward to defending it in wrap up lists for the decade come december.
  • Best film of the Decade, really?
  • Yeah really. Once it hits you that Eli is the villain and that the entire story is about Eli and Oskar's entire life told out of order, add in the atmosphere and sweet cinematography you get the best movie of the decade.
  • I don't know about Decade but maybe of the year that it came out. (was it last year?) It is just a vampire movie, isn't it?
  • Have you not seen it? It's not a vampire movie. It's the vampire movie.
  • RPK
I'll take the more realistic feel of miniatures, puppets, and costumes any day over the cheesy, fake looking, video game feeling, superficial look of CGI. Lucas could have just tried using more of a mixture of CGI and miniatures, but I guess the thought, "Hell, I have enough space in my hard drive, lets do it all in photoshop!" (or whatever the hell software they use)
  • As "sad" as that picture may be of George Lucas behind the green screen the man has brought us one of the greatest special effects company (ILM) to ever work in the field.

And to that I'm grateful that Lucas decided to make such progress in terms of CGI.
  • I bet all those models from the 1983 shot are worth more than what Episode I-III made at the box office...

I saw a trailer for The Hurt Locker when I saw Brothers Bloom at the Arclight, and it looked intense. I must say, I like the original conceptual poster where it simply showed a dirty bomb in the ground. The new poster looks too fancy.
  • Pie
I oughta get me one of those swanky Avid keyboard shortcut covers for my macbook!
  • PintelGuy
Not quite sure why people keep going to Michael Cera for AD quotes. He was the only asshat who didn't want to do it/didn't think it' happen/didn't think anyone wanted to see it.
  • Sara
Seriously! I really hope everyone can come together and make a good movie without ruining how brilliant the show was
  • Weyland_Yutani
Love that poster design for Crazy for Cult. Well done.

Hurt Locker is a very good film. I hope it does well. The film DOES have repeated bomb deactivation sequences ( although, they are mostly successful. Otherwise it would have been a pretty short film). I'm okay with the poster as a companion to the others already out there, however, that tag line is pretty weird. I don't think it's an accurate tag for what these soldiers go through.
  • Ooo, I want a laptop with an editing keyboard.
  • The Lucas greenscreen photo is Photoshopped and not from 2005 (closer to 2000 or 2001). It was one of the pictures taken on-location in Tunisia during the shooting of Attack of the Clones. Was there a lot of greenscreen used in the Prequels? Obviously. But for someone to take a swipe at him and choose to modify one of the few on-location pictures to do so? Dumb.

And there were as many models and miniatures in the Prequels as there were in the Lord of the Rings films. I know that will upset a lot of people's ironclad opinions but it's true.

So, "fail", as the saying goes.
  • Michael Cera loves disappointing Arrested Development fans.
  • tobor68
that star trek clip is great. could use more lens flare tho.
  • Whiskey
Here's a fun fact for you, the Star Wars prequels actually had more models built for them than the original trilogy.

I am stunned by some of the responses posted on this thread! Before I continue, know that I am a HUGE Star Wars and Lord of the Rings fan....freakin huge. In fact you will not find a bigger fan of either series than me.
On that note you should know that for years I was "THAT" guy who was pretty much the official George Lucas apologizer/defender, coming up with excuses on why he decided to do the prequels certain ways as opposed to others. However, eventually one must face the truth....as so many of you in this thread clearly have not.

I am going to start off with a response to Justin Brown, who has listed what could very well be THE DUMBEST thing I have ever read on the internet. You would seriously have to have down syndrome to actually believe that George Lucas used as many models & miniatures in the SW prequels as there were in the LOTR trilogy. Christ, I don't think I have ever heard anything that ridiculous in my entire life! Even when I was making excuses for George Lucas I wouldn't have admitted to that!
It's a fact that, in the prequels, George Lucas routinely turned to green/blue screen before any other method of production. His primary concern was to achieve the most incredible special effect possible, every - single - time, until it got to the point where a large majority of the film actually resembles a really advanced video game. It's like he used the prequels solely for the purpose as a testing ground for his effects company and didn't even take into consideration the effect it might have on the story.....which if you ask me, that with the combination of making them about as kiddy friendly as you could possibly go, is the biggest "FUCK YOU" to the Star Wars fan base as you could give.

What it all comes down to is that George Lucas is a good storyteller....that is, he comes up with great story structures (or backbones of stories), but he is a horrific screenplay writer and a very poor Director, period.

Now to address Sunand3Stars, the reason why that picture is so funny is because it shows how much George Lucas's mentality has changed in terms of his approach to filmmaking. In the 70's and 80's he had a very hands on approach, he built tons and tons on models and engineered countless new techniques to achieves never-before seen visual goals with limited resources. But as soon as ILM started to make a breakthrough in photo-realistic CGI he basically said "FUCK IT!" to every other form of filmmaking and resulted to the "WE'LL DO IT IN POST" attitude".
And as anyone who is not in denial will admit, the Star Wars Prequels were not, even remotely, on par with how good they COULD HAVE been if a truly great filmmaker had been behind the wheel. A filmmaker who knew that to achieve the desired effect you must seamlessly marry multiply different techniques (Miniatures, Bigatures, Anamatronics, realistic set pieces and ACTUAL LOCATIONS) and then, and only then, if you cant find any other way of doing it then you result to Digital Special Effects. THAT is why it is funny.

Anyone who doesn't agree that George Lucas got Special Effects happy on the prequels is either in complete denial or out of there fuckin minds.....or both.
  • Matthew
I can't believe how much you guys love Hurt Locker. It wasn't bad, but was more mediocre than I thought it would be.
  • Someone should turn fight club rules chart into a shirt.
  • I am tired of Michael Cera because he plays the same manic character in everything.
Love the Lucas pIc. Lucas is such a has been.
  • I still can't believe that Alexander Skarsgard didn't get the role. He was perfect. I wonder what went wrong.
  • Captain America, he's going to get the role for that.
  • Can't wait for this year's Crazy 4 Cult- I went opening night last year and there was a lot of really great stuff.

So, the kid sitting behind Mr. Unkrich on the plane, then, could have peeked over the seat and seen TS3? Little bastard.

I do love that that particular Kelvin and Enterprise meeting is "fictional", though. :-)
