The Prisoner Television Teaser

Earlier this week, AMC dropped a teaser for the channel’s upcoming remake of the classic Patrick McGoohan ITV series The Prisoner. I’ve been curious about how this would look, not to mention why exactly it’s being made, and the teaser at least gives an indication of the aesthetic. The six episode mini-series, which premieres in November, stars Jim Caviezel in Patrick McGoohan’s role as Number Six, and Ian McKellen as Number Two. See the teaser after the jump.

The Prisoner ran seventeen episodes on ITV in 1967 and ‘68. It was created by Patrick McGoohan as a vague follow up to his series Danger Man. In the original, McGoohan’s Number Six was explicitly an intelligence agent who, upon his unexpected retirement, is kidnapped and sent to a mysterious seaside village/prison where other prisoners and the enigmatic Number Two used unusual methods to toy with his mental state and evaluate what information he holds secret. The series is a television landmark for combining hallucinogenic imagery with science fiction conventions and Orwellian political overtones. The opening sequence, embedded after the new teaser below, is one of the most striking pieces of television ever created.

We don’t know if Caviezel’s Number Six has political ties, only that he arrives in The Village with no memory of how he came to be there. We also don’t know if this mini-series is a story that takes place in the continuity of the original series, or if it is a wholly separate reinterpretation. The BBC has said the show “will reflect 21st century concerns and anxieties such as liberty, security and surveillance.” More important: will Rover, the bouncing semi-sentient weather balloon that acted as outer guard for The Village, return? And while one of the most significant characters in the original was The Village itself, played by Portmeiron Village in Wales, the new Village is tropical, and scenes have been shot also in South Africa and Namibia.

But there is reason to be hopeful. AMC has done wonders with the original series Breaking Bad and Mad Men; it’s not like the network is just another source for edited for television films. For more information, scour through AMC’s relatively extensive collection of behind the scenes video. (Though they don’t seem to have a single decent promo shot of Caviezel and McKellen in character. WTF, AMC?) The network’s website is also streaming the entire original series, which suggests they’re at least confident enough in the new work to stack it up directly against the classic.

I'm looking foward to the remake, because I'm currently watching the original for the first time and was pulled out of the story a couple of times because of some things that are just to dated. AMC does a great job with their own series and I don't believe that they will mess up this one.

I think you need to update your story, The Prisoner was on ITV channel, not BBC, even on the BBC link above, it says ITV!

I don't think the BBC had anything to do with it.
  • Yeah, that was me being an idiot. Thanks for pointing it out.
  • Yup, it was an ITV show back in the 60s and the remake is due to air on ITV1 this time around, though Sky One was also mooted a while back. The BBC site are just reporting on the fact it's been made.
  • Argh. I thought maybe this was a new, longer teaser. But alas, it's the same promo spot that appeared on AMC during the Breaking Bad finale.

I'm really looking forward to the miniseries either way.

Loved this series. There were such great mind games played by various characters on each other....notably the recurring conflicts between number 6 and the different number 2's. Dated? Yes, but still stands up to some of the garbage I've seen on TV recently.
  • I watched the original "Prisoner" after finding out that the "Lost" creators cited it as an influence on their show. And I was surprised about how much of "The Prisoner" shows up on "Lost": The weird island as a main character, the perimeter security system of an almost abstract nature (smokey=big bouncy bubble), the mind games played by the enigmatic leader (Ben=#2), the idea that the people in the island are all in on this huge charade while the protagonist has no clue about what's going on, where he is, or why he is kept there. There is one more main similarity that has to do with the ending of "The Prisoner", but I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but those of you who did and follow "Lost" will know what I am talking about...
  • how is it an original an AMC Original if its a remake. either way I am excited as long as the orbs are in this version

The prisoner is pretty famous in uk and spawned the frase 'I am not a number'
  • "be seeing you."

can't wait. so i guess no. 2 won't be played by a string of actors this time, i loved that about the original, some higher power "deleting" the number two's when they couldn't extract information from six. i also couldn't imagine a better two than ian mckellen. wow. stoked. i don't mind caveizel but he's no patrick mcgoohan, we'll see.

This didn't go online earlier this week but a lot longer ago than that. Old news. I noticed the news on this site was getting a little older all the time.
  • You are, number six.
  • Number Six
    I am not a number!

    I am a free man!
  • Great news, I loved the original series and I also found the episode of The Simpsons in which Homer is sent to the Island particularly funny! Definitely one of the better 'spoofing' episodes The Simpsons have created...
  • i don't know if this has been said but I wouldn't call this a MINI series, six episodes is not that far below average for a UK TV show, most are 8 episodes and long series might be 12 (Doctor Who is 13 episodes)

In the US, a miniseries means that it is closed-ended. In other words, there will not be a second season, although there have been exceptions to that.

cool. 2 great actors, one cool story.
  • maybe the new number two is the old number six...
  • <3 sir ian!
  • I visited the Original Village in England a while back. I loved it.
    Looking forward to the remake.

This has 'Stinker' written all over it. Anyone who really knows the original series knows that it was very much the artistic vision of Patrick McGoohan, and isn't the sort of property or brand name that lends itself to a remake in the same way that Battlestar Galactica or The Bionic Woman do.

None of the trailers I've seen inspire me - the new Village looks rather dull and, as much as I like Ian McKellan, the casting doesn't thrill me either (in the original series Number Two changed each episode whish gave an extra uncertainty to life in The Village - sometimes you didn't even know who Number Two was until too late and Number 6 had fallen into his or her trap).

This is going to be a very sad-footnote to the legend of the classic Patrick McGoohan show.

    Be seeing you!

Grew up watching the original but i have to go back and watch them to refresh my memories before tackling the new series. For those who havent seen the orignal i recommend watching the new episodes first then go back and see how it measured up.
