save our ceos michael moore

Update: Overture has released the official trailer, embedded after the jump.

Every Friday night I represent /Film as a guest on the BDK Movie Show on WJFK, and tonight’s show kicked off with a great little scoop about Michael Moore. Being a DC based radio station, they were definitely (once again) in the right place, at the right time.

Lucky moviegoers in a very small number of theaters in NY, LA, Chicago and DC tonight ended up playing a part in the promotions for Michael Moore’s next documentary. As Peter told you on Thursday, the teaser trailer for Moore’s as-yet untitled ‘bailout’ film was set for premiere in cinemas today. What he couldn’t tell you then was just how unusual the first teaser trailer was, and how interactive…

Perhaps the lucky cinema patrons had some inkling that something odd was going to go down tonight when, as they walked in to take their seats, they had to pass by signs telling them that they were liable to be filmed and informing them that entering the auditorium would be, in effect, giving consent for their images to be recorded and used.

The very last trailer to be screened before the movie was something of a surprise. Shosanna Dreyfuss style, a big close-up of Michael Moore appeared on the screen, addressed the audience directly, and told them the following:

Hi, I’m Michael Moore. Instead of using this time to tell you about my new movie I’d like to take a moment and ask you to join me in helping our fellow Americans. The downturn in the economy has hurt many people, people who have had no choice but to go on government assistance. Yet our welfare agencies can only do so much. That’s why I’m asking you to reach into your pockets right now and lend a hand. Ushers will be coming down the aisles to collect your donations for Citibank, Bank of America, AIG, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and a host of other needy banks and corporations. Won’t you please give generously? Now, I know what you’re thinking - I already gave at the bailout. And I know you did, but even if you’ve given in the past, give some more. It will make you feel… good.

During this, ushers really did walk out amongst the patrons with buckets in hand and wearing T-shirts with the slogan ‘Save our CEOs’. I don’t know if anybody dropped any cash in, or for that matter what Moore’s team would have done with any donated funds. Perhaps he’ll actually try and pass it on to the ailing institutions and film the ensuing events for the film? Sounds like a possible Moore move.

I think we can expect a wider release of a similar teaser that cuts together the announcement with footage shot in that handful of cinemas that took part in the stunt tonight, and from what I heard on WJFK, this trailer could hit as soon as Sunday. A very special audio clip from the show lies below.

  • Really? An Inglourious Basterds reference before the movie has had a wide release?
  • I hope he places blame on Obama as well instead of just blaming Bush and big business, since Obama is just as big a scumbag for continuing these bailouts.
  • Michael Moore isn't just anti-Republican. He's anti-stupid decisions. Obama has highly disappointed me with his economic policy. I'm not sure why he thought it would be a good idea to continue the Bush bailouts, but whatever.

Anyhow, Michael Moore says Obama is just like Bush:

  • Moore couldn't survive in this world unless he had someone to blame. I love his work... but that's the simple truth. It doesn't matter who's in office, he feeds on people's power. Anyone with power is an automatic target. Take him with a grain of salt, he's the Limbaugh of liberalism.
  • jdowd
the limbaugh criticism is a wee bit off the mark - saying it doesn't make it so. can anyone name a statement by moore that equals limbaugh's remarks about michael j. fox? or glenn beck's insanity, or ann coulter?? i think he oversimplifies things sometimes but the 'limbaugh of liberalism' is a bit ridiculous.
btw: - if moore didn't criticize clinton (which he did in the 1990s) or obama he would be called a partisan hack, when he does he just wants to blame someone.
  • I'm pretty sure moore survives on hot pockets and cheetos, not people to blame
  • freddo
You ignorant sapsucker, pull your head out of the sand, you've been mind controlled by the controlled news media...sad but...ha ha ha
  • Joe Black
Michael Moore is a first class anti-American, Socialist who wants America to be just like Socialist Europe!!! The Dem’s want to completely destroy our country so they can rebuild it the way they Dem's want!!! Forget about our safety?!?!?! And what more with our Troops??? Has you guys forgot??? What part of "The Terrorist’s want to kill us"! do you not understand??????????
or do you blame 9/11 on the US Govt.? Obama does not Apologize for me!!!
  • Mooreon
Ironic considering he was singing the praises from the rooftops pretty much since his nomination. I find it more likely that he says just enough to cover his own rear-end, especially in instances where he can't just remove his written words and pretend they never happened.
  • econdude
Continuing the bailouts is like continuing chemotherapy -- it's the poison we take to avoid far worse conditions. The blame belongs with (a) those who for decades supported an extreme form of deregulation and (b) a Bush administration that, when the bubble and its consequences were obvious, hoped to get past the fall 08 elections without having to do anything.
  • "Lucky" moviegoers?
  • Yeah, I think its cool to see something unique, especially if it was unexpected and didn't take up too much time.
  • black
A conservative bashing a movie before they've even seen a trailer for it? No, that would be too obvious.
  • WALL-E
Like him or hate him, agree or disagree with his views, his movies are entertaining (except for F9/11...)
  • Oh F9/11? You mean its not entertaining because it's really entertaining?
  • I actually agree. I like his other movies, but I found F9/11 to be a very boring documentary. I really like Bowling For Columbine.

Sometimes Moore is a little over-the-top with his commentary and tactics, but usually he's pretty funny.
  • stark1288
Wow. I would love to be at one of these few select movie theaters. Sounds like a fun way to promote the movie. I wonder what they'll do with the footage: trailers/promotional or is it for the actual movie?
  • jason B
i totally agree brendon - a new cinema experience is always exciting, wether you like the guy or not.
  • I think Michel Moore is a very smart guy, no matter what his political beliefs are. I really enjoyed Sicko and I think that this stunt is very cleaver. I am interested to see what his guerrilla marketing has accomplished.
  • I would've been giddy if that happened to me. Not because of Moore, but because of the truth behind those words.
  • Jennifer
i saw this with 'taking pelham 123'
  • It would have been pretty freaking hilarious if the crowd donated a ton of money.
  • So they got to see the previews for the new Godzilla movie. Big whoop. o.0
  • That would annoy me if I came to watch a film and Michael Moore was there. -.-
  • oats
This played before Moon (Duncan Jones had a sweet Q&A afterwards) and it was really annoying. Just my personal opinion probably because I hate Michael Moore. Moon is sweet by the way.
  • Deke
Michael Moore is one of the most outstanding patriotic caring, witty people in America, it baffles me that so many uninformed right wing people hate him ? I never seemed to understand how

    A. People can be fooled into believing the lies and false propaganda his enemies on the right has fabricated about him over the years when he exposes their dirty laundry.

    B. How anyone who is middle class or lower that are not apart of the hideous corporations or political parties he exposes can dislike him ?

He is fighting for you !! He is helping You !! I guess I also can't understand why anyone would be a Repug that wasn't making more than a million/year and involved in the stuff he exposes either ? What a sad pathetic, hateful, religous zealots, God fearing, bunch of lunatics !!
  • Michelle
OMG exactly my thoughts! I don't understand how people who are NOT rich and connected can think MM is annoying! He is pulling the curtain back and exposing the people who will do ANYTHING to get money. Let someone die of a treatable disease, take our tax money and give oodles of it as bonus' and go on "corporate retreats". Talk about annoying! Why doesn't THAT annoy you????!
  • Mooreon
The irony being that you're supporting a man who fabricates material himself for the very same reason, to get filthy stinking rich off the system he claims to despise.

My wife doesn't have my IQ or my college education, and even she has enough common sense to see right through his blustering agitprop.
  • TC
Thank you Deke! I couldn't have said it better.
  • Hmm... more annoyed by a fat guy who makes funny movies or than by the fact that almost 4 TRILLION DOLLARS has gone to the bailout.

    Hmm...
  • Hmm... more annoyed by a fat guy who makes funny movies or than by the fact that almost 4 TRILLION DOLLARS has gone to the bailout.

    Hmm... tough call.
  • The nerve of Michael Moore pointing out that corporate welfare is a travesty. The nerve of that guy.
  • Michelle Elliott
I second that. Corporate welfare saves the rest of us. Isn't that obvious how we're all now being saved? Having jobs? Homes? Increase in consumer power? Haven't we noticed the improvement?
  • flyingfox
    LOL!
  • The Schaef
He's welcome to point out that corporate welfare is a travesty. But the problem is that his "point" won't really make a point at all. If anyone did an ambush donation drive for any reason, they'd be unlikely to get much result from that. If it was a money maker, Jerry's Kids would have been all over it years ago. So the lack of donation proves nothing; it won't stop Moore, though, from acting like it does. He is the master of "proving" his point with irrelevancies.

Im just gonna say this to anyone who think obama is doing a bad job....im canadian so were kinda impartial up here but think of obama as the maid having to clean up after motley crue in the 80's its only been 3-4 months yes I dissagree with the banks but it might have been the only way give the guy a break for now if in 4 years things havent changed well then you guys are gonna be fucked vote independent lol!
  • I stopped at Canadien....
Anyway, about the topic. That's funny and original! I would've been freaked to be one of those ushers though, fearing a suck punch while wearing a T shirt like that.
  • Joe Sixpack
you're an ignorant fuck who can't spell canadian.
  • please never become a writer
  • steven
We place all votes from Canada in the short round filing cabinet.
  • What a bunch of bullsh**. I bet hes happy theres economic problems in the world so he can make another one of his stupid documentaries where he can do some more "Shocking" things like this.
  • Yes, because the sole purpose of making a political documentary is to enjoy yourself at the country's expense.
  • I've got to say he set out to make this film with no economic kaboom but what kind of filmmaker would he be if he ignored such an opportunity?
  • Out of interest do republicans have to believe in God?
  • Acoustic Bob
They have to SAY they do.
  • In the 80's I lived in Alaska and due to a state law governing parties eligible for registration, those of us registered as Libertarian were notified in early '88 that the party had lost it's eligibility and we would have to reregister. I had decided to get active because I liked Dole much more than HW (and his lack of record for all the jobs he had) so I checked out what we needed to do to participate in the upcoming GOP caucus. Just show up and register there. I confirmed this and was assured we did not need to register before then.

We showed up, explained our situation and were told by our precinct chair, an assistant pastor of the mega Anchorage Baptist Temple across the street, that he couldn't do that. He said we could stay and watch, but not participate. The level of control in that entire room of ~10 precincts was unreal. Every one parroted the party lines, no one had a unique, or even lame, variation. We were not asked to sign a volunteer information sheet, even though I had been clear about wanting to get active. No effort to get our names, address, phone #. After we were totally fed up, we walked out, stopping to explain the situation to a newspaper reporter as we left. The story made the front page the next day and while I was trying to absorb the lie the pastor had passed off on the reporter, the phone rang. A very senior member of the state GOP was calling to apologize for the pastor's "mistake", and offered to send someone to the house. I declined, informing him that from what we had seen at the caucus, the GOP was clearly not our party. That night I went to the Democratic caucus, registered and found out the Dems are sane, patriotic Americans who were not trying to make the country socialist. My response is, if you want to participate in the GOP, you need to tote or quote the Bible.

I also had a call from a local church that was just starting a 4 week seminar on the evangelical infiltration of politics. Most of the information came from Citizens Network, a Cornell University project devoted to exposing the forces behind the arms race. It was overwhelming then and has only increased.

If you really want to delve in to the religious power that runs DC, find a copy of Jeff Sharlet's "The Family". It's worse than you can possibly immagine. Without some grasp of this behind the scenes organization, history and operation, DC is just not understandable. Until we have enough awareness and a strong grassroots movement to expose and replace the elected legislators who are participants, the system will not function to represent the will of the people. It is violating the separation of church and state, big time. Worse, The Family's distorted interpretation of Jesus' message supports our massive military and using it - to promote a Christian world. Note, this group is different than the Evangelical/ fundamentalist church groups - although they work in concert. If your head isn't reeling, it should be.
  • No they don't have to. But they say they do to get the Christian vote. Reagan pioneered this vote design and it's worked out great for them through the years.
  • So that's basically a yes they have to believe in God, publicly, even if in actuality they don't.
  • Basically, yes.
