john carter of mars casting

Yesterday we learned that Andrew Stanton’s live-action debut John Cartner of Mars was gearing up for a November shoot in Utah, and that Tom Cruise was circling, but is no longer involved with the project. It stands to reason that in the coming weeks we’ll begin to hear casting announcements.

ComingSoon noticed that Lynn Collins, best known for playing Silverfox in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Dawn Green on the television series True Blood, tweeted “celebrating john carter of mars!!!!!!!” One could argue that Lynn might have just finished the book, or was celebrating the news that the film is going into production, but the logical conclusion is that the actress has scored a roleĀ  in the sci-fi action adventure film.

The Hollywood Reporter has since confirmed that Collins has been cast in the project. The big shocker is that she’s not the only actor from X-Men Origins: Wolverine that has joined the project. Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in Wolverine and Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights, has also joined the film. According to the report, “Kitsch will play the title character, Carter, while Collins is playing Dejah Thoris, the heir to the throne of Mars’ Helium kingdom.”

The film is expected to be the first of a possible trilogy. A Princess of Mars was first published in 1917. The movie will follow Civil War vet John Carter, who is transplanted to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot tall green barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, who is in desperate need of a savior.

I think this fits Stanton's philosophy to bring something as fresh as possible to the screen. I'm so curious how live action is going to look coming from him. Can't wait.

Was hoping for Christina Hendricks, but really, I hope to see her in everything from soap commercials on up.

I for one am glad he did not cast any famous actors in the leading roles.

So will they be battling the people of Utah? Cuz I'll totally watch that. I don't wanna watch them battle no stinkin' martians! Take it again, Utah!

I have a feeling this movie will rule
  • I like the idea of making new stars.

People can complain "They're a bunch of B-listers" but you gotta start somewhere, you know.
  • Damnit! I hope he does better in this than as Gambit. It would really suck if this sucked.

Lynn Collins is an amazing actress. A Juliard grad and appeared in a lot Shakespeare in New York.
  • This is lame casting.
  • Lynn Collins does have a very exotic look to her.
  • It's so funny the way you guys always say Tom Cruise is 'Circling' like it came from a posting guideline or something...
  • Trilogy. Right.
  • Waiting for the Hugh Jackman casting announcement.
  • The magical thing about the John Carter books was that they were written back in 1919, before anyone knew what Mars was really like. So, Mars in the book was a Conan like jungle planet, so that is a novelty, I would say.

Too bad the princess won't be naked. Yes, I think in the books, everyone is..naked. (tha tah thaaaa)

I guess this means we'll be seeing less of him on FNL... (Unless them having a shortened season that starts filming soon allows him to do both. Then that's cool.)

Its about a civil war vet that gets transported to mars and has to save a princess. Its epic stuff and I'm glad to see Tim Riggins get a shot at the big leagues.
  • I agree man, this kid is really talented and deserves this. Even though his Gambit was Ok in xmen origins: wolverine ( NO CAJUN ACCENT!). But again best of luck to him.

I was about to ask the same thing Mike.

I don't really know anything about this property, so can someone explain why he has the Batman emblem on his chest?

Since John Carter was around about 20 years before Batman, you should be asking "why does Batman wear John Carters symbol?"
  • That's a Frank Frazetta painting from 1972, so John Carter's wearing Batman's symbol. Actually it's a little different when you see it close up.
