Will Hayao Miyazaki Appear at Comic-Con?

miyazaki

When I first heard that Legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki would be making a very rare trip to North America, to my neck of the woods - the bay area, to appear, accept a prize, premiere his new film and participate in a Q & A on July 25th, I screamed out loud. It wasn’t a scream of joy, like it should have been… it was a scream of annoyance. As CartoonBrew put it, Miyazaki “so rarely travels to the US, and even less so to make public appearances.” And July 25th is the same weekend I’ll be traveling down to San Diego for Comic Con.  In the days that followed, something occurred to me — why would Miyazaki be making an around the world trip just to appear at Berkeley?

Unless he’s making the trip for a bigger reason? Miyazaki’s new film Ponyo is set to be released in the United States on August 14th, opening on over 800 screens (the widest release for any Miyazaki film in America). The film will make its official premiere on June 28th as the closing night film at the LA Film Festival, which I’m now sure Miyazaki will be in attendance for.

Could it be that he’ll be appearing at Comic Con as well? Producer Frank Marshall revealed on twitter that Ponyo “will have a big presence at ComicCon” which leads me to believe that Miyazaki will be appearing at Comic Con to promote the upcoming release. Comic-Con runs June 23rd to 26th, so Miyazaki could appear on Thursday, Friday or Sunday. And with a film print in hand, might we even get a sneak preview screening? I’m 99% sure (couldn’t get 100% confirmation) that Mitazaki has never appeared at Comic-Con before, so this is a huge deal.

I would hope that /Film readers have seen some of Miyazaki’s films, but for those of you who haven’t, here are the cliff notes: Miyazaki is considered not only the Walt Disney, but also in some ways the Steven Spielberg of Japan. To give you an example of his success, Spirited Away overtook Titanic to become the highest grossing film in Japanese history. His films aren’t just commercial successes but also critically acclaimed both in Japan and in America.

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke have won Picture of the Year at the Japan Academy Prize (basically the equivalent of the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards). Spirited Away also holds the honor of being the only anime film to ever win an American Academy Award. If you haven’t seen any of his movies, I recommend that you run (not walk) to the store right now and buy (not rent) Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Tororo and Howl’s Moving Castle.

I’ve embedded the Japanese trailer for Ponya below.

  • Definitely also check out Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. And Porco Rosso. And Castle in the Sky. And Kiki's Delivery Service. And then go to Japan and to the Ghibli museum and watch all the shorts that they have there....
  • Stefanie B
Yes I agree! Castle in the Sky is my favorite of all the films. And I have been to Japan and I did go to the Studio Ghibli Museum and it was awesome! I love his work.
  • Another thing is that these are The greatest dubs ever, in case you are turned off by anime dubbing.
  • They are so well done that watching the english dubs (especially Spirited Away) is superior to the subtitles if you do not speak Japanese.
  • The Princess Mononoke dubbing was excellent.
  • Ceph
"excellent"? Not so. Gilian Anderson and Billy Bob Thornton were horrible choices for their respective characters. Especially Gilian, she's the reason I simply can't stand the english dub.

But the rest of the american cast did well, a far as I remeber.

I really liked Fox's dubbing for My Neighbor totoro and the dubbing for various others but once it got to Spirited Away I felt it just went downhill. Not to mention Whisper of the heart's English dubbing completely changes the story.
  • Damn do I hope Ponyo releases in a theater around me.
  • I really need to get to San Diego...
  • Have they released any info on which cities or theaters it will be coming out on or is it too early?
  • Have they released any info on which cities or theaters it will be coming to or is it too early?
  • I'm very much looking forward to Ponyo that'll be a trip into LA for me and the kid though I hoping it plays in Pasadena.

Miyazaki is by far my favorite animated director/storyteller his movies are truly fantastic. I recommend his films to everyone whenever the subject comes up or I bring it up. The kid and I have had his movies on rotation over the last month.

I have to agree. Actually, for my money, Miyazaki and Pixar are the guys who consistently put out films - not just animated films, but films in general - that are nothing short of brilliance. They are just working on a completely different, and insane, level than practically everyone else out there.

Where is the Bay area event going to be and what is it? I hadn't heard of this appearance until now.

  • That would be amazing if he went. I'm president of the anime club at school, and I managed to get some of the members to go to Comic-Con, even though I told them the convention was predominately films and comics. We actually bought a Japanese version of Ponyo to show in the club. But anyways, blood vessels will burst if this is true. Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite films of all time.

Argghh! Why did I move to LA? I'm totally gonna miss Miyazaki at Berkeley.
  • Got tickets to see him in Berkeley. The Japanese department at UC Berkeley is hosting him. Sooooo excited!!!
  • Clint Eastwood came in late 2008 to accept a similar award from the Japanese Department. They screened his film 'Letters From Iwo Jima' at the Pacific Film Archive. Berkeley is essentially the center of East Asian studies on the West Coast, it's not like Miyazaki is stopping by a random place in the bay area, he's accepting an award from a distinguished group of scholars and attending a screening of his new film. I lucked out because I'm a student at the school and I'm living here over the summer, so tickets were a cinch to get!
  • He is simply the greatest director alive in the entire world. I'd do terrible things to shake the guy's hand.

Also as an aside the first thing i thought after Up was that it could have been a Miyazaki film.
  • My wife and I are taking a vacation to San Fran. that week, and we got tickets to see Miyazaki at Berkley. We've never been to California, but we're excited to hear him speak and the loiter around the gates of Pixar until they tell us to leave!

I agree that it would be cool if he showed up at Comic-Con, but dude don't like crowds. The film festival is the most likely explaination for his travels.

Miyazaki's not a fan-boy, so I'm not sure if he'd feel comfortable attending.
  • Sung Shin
is anyone willing to sell me a ticket for double the price? Thanks. Contact me at Shin2001143@sbclgobal.net
  • I'm hoping he'll come on Friday since it's one of the busier days... It doesn't make sense to have him come on Sunday since from what I've heard from frequent SDCC visitors, Sunday is the day everyone packs up and people do their shopping right? Someone who's a cultural landmark and icon needs a better day where most of his fans could get to see him.
