guillermo

One of BBC radio presenter Simon Mayo’s guests this week was Guillermo del Toro, and luckily for Guillermo, he came by on a Tuesday when Mayo’s oft-addled movie-reviewing sidekick Mark Kermode would be out of the way. While they were there to primarily discuss Del Toro’s vampire novel The Strain, Mayo did have a poke and probe into many of Guillermo’s upcoming movies, not least of all The Hobbit. After the break, details on his various cast confirmations, including Hugo Weaving as Elrond, and a good sackful of other del Toro updates, including details on why Hellboy 3 will very possibly not happen, the casting and make-up tests for Frankenstein, a potential TV version of The Strain and more.

Let’s deal with The Hobbit first because, hey, Guillermo has to. When Mayo asked about the proposed ‘bridge film’, Guillermo explained that now the plan was to make just two films, between them adapting the novel and factoring in some subplot material:

There is a whole other chapter, so to speak, which is the comings and going of Gandalf which are dealt with, people that know the lore know that Gandalf was delayed with a crisis… with a character that is very shady called the Necromancer that proves to be Sauron.

Mayo then asked if Andy Serkis is back, which prompted Guillermo to confirm a nice little trio of casting locks:

Yes [and] Ian McKellen is back, [and] Hugo Weaving in the roles they originated in the trilogy.

On the matter of Smaug, Guillermo explained that only now, after eight months of design work have they just “cracked the basic engineering.” He suspects that they will need another six or seven months of application there before Smaug is ready for his close up.

Beyond The Hobbit, Guillermo discussed the possibility of him directing a fourth Blade film - no, because Wesley Snipes and New Line are no longer “on legal speaking terms”; of a third Hellboy, which sadly seems unlikely as Ron Perlman has said he no longer wants to wear the prosthetics, so Guillermo “guesses” it will never happen; and of a feature film of The Strain, which won’t happen as he believes it would require six feature films, so he instead suggests a comic book or TV series, which would have Ron Perlman as the rat catcher Vasily Fet.

As for Jekyll and Hyde, Guillermo let it be known that he will only be producing. For Frankenstein, however, he will definitely be directing. Most surprisingly, he announced that he has already cast Doug Jones in the role of the monster and that make-up tests for the film would be taking place in the next few weeks. Is he planning to shoot it while still in New Zealand?

The smaller updates related to Guillermo’s adaptations of Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and Dahl’s The Witches, for both of which he has long since had completed scripts in hand. Neither, however, has received studio support and not being able to find the funding has prevented either from being made. According to Guillermo, though, securing the cash for them in future will be “a quest” for him, so don’t count either picture out for the count yet.

You can listen to the full show via the BBC’s iPlayer until Monday, at least. Guillermo comes on at around the 1 hour 47 minute mark. Thanks to Ben Key for reminding us to pull our fingers out and actually listen to the interview with his pointing towards the OneRing forums.

I think The Hobbit should be its own thing, rather than a large part of it serving as a "bridge" film (though some bridging would certainly be fine). However, I think the real "bridges" should come with a DVD of animated shorts - like The Animatrix, or the Gotham Knight collection.

    Bruce Payne should play Thorin!

it just so sO SO sad that ATMOM is still looking for funding... of all of GDT upcoming movies/projects, ATMOM is the one that i anticipate the most, and i believe that can be said of all Lovecraftian purists out there...

    ...ftgan..
  • I'm really glad they're taking a lot of time on Smaug. The momemts when we first hear and see Smaug should make our eyes wide and jaws drop.

If Weta is involved then they can take as much as they need. I rather wait to see an awesome Smaug rather then a rushed job.

Does that mean Perlman won't be in the hobbit movies? Make-up would be required, wouldn't it?
  • SOS
So this news means then that 2 other LOTR characters should also be making a return?!

Del Toro is going to follow Gandalf's journey to the White Council (a gathering of the wise led by Saruman), Necromancer’s tower and dramatic battle at Dol Guldur, while Bilbo and the dwarves were tackling the dragon. Christopher Lee should reprise his role as Saruman at the White Council (seeing as Saruman is central to the activities at the White Council prior to attacking Dol Guldur). Elrond and Galadriel are also present at the White Council, hence Hugo Weaving's involvement so therefore Cate Blanchett should be cast in the bridge movie.

Hopefully they will be announced as cast members when the new Bilbo is announced in a few weeks! Exciting times are ahead.

Great news re Weaving, although I agree that his acting was rather flat Elrond is a very one dimensional character (in both the book and the films) and he did pretty well with what he had to work with in my opinion. Plus, when it comes to casting for these two movies, continuity trumps everything.

Unfortunately, I don't think Christoper Lee will be returning as Saruman - he has said that he doesn't think he is physically capable of the 24 hour plane journey (UK to NZ). As a kiwi living in London, I can see where he's coming from. Still, if these films follow the post-production pattern of the trilogy, with scoring (and possibly editing) in London, I don't see why Lee's scenes couldn't be done as pick-ups in London? He'll be mainly with McKellen in those scenes anyway, who's also based here.
  • hobbit news rules.
    hellboy news not so much.
hellboy 2 was soo fucking good.
  • I'm happy to see Del Toro is in no shortage of projects to work on, but I was really hoping he'd do another take on the Spanish Civil War, like the project 3993 that inexplicably disappeared off the radar. Also truly looking forward to At the Mountains of Madness, which seems to be at a loss for funding. Someday...
  • Kingundr_Mountain
Ron Perlman as the voice of Smaug!

And maybe we could see the return of John Rhys-Davies as one of the 10 dwarves?
  • ilves
I'm glad they got Hugo Weaving back for continuity's sake, but as an actor he was horrible in LOTR. His acting has one mode: flat. I haven't seen him in a role where he actually expresses any type of emotion.
  • CyT
Try watching Priscilla Queen of the Desert or Peaches. He is a very versatile actor even if it a bit subtle in most films. Although, even his emotionless Agent Smith seemed cold and calculating and angry throughout all the films.
  • SOS
Hugo Weaving is the man! Exactly how Elrond should be and as for Agent Smith, his character has gone down in movie legend
  • I actually would like another Hellboy. I really enjoyed those movies. They were simply beautiful to look at, imho.
  • thank god no more hellboy. and blade was pretty played out.
anyway, these are great confirmations for the movie.
  • No more Hellboy or Blade? That sucks...
  • me too, I don't like more blade.
  • Thank the LOTR gods! Those three actors and the One Ring are the glue that will bind LOTR and The Hobbit(s) together. Now who's going to play Thorin Oakenshield, Smaug and Burgler Baggins? Sooo excited!
  • Riiiiiiiiiiight.

Kermode is hilarious! He says the most ridiculous things. Don't you remember him talking about Ethan Coen's input to Tropic Thunder as though he could perceive it, or his infamous line "All matter in the universe is satan making his way back to God" or... or... or...

I'll tell you what, after his show tomorrow I'll come back here and add some of the choice drivel he dribbles out.
  • Gennaro Gattuso
Yeah, it's like saying Brazil is the greatest film ever made, or that Thelma Schoonmaker has wasted her career by working for Scorsese.

What kind of prick would say those things?
  • Anyone else smell jealousy?

There was absolutely no reason to have a pathetic little dig at Kermode in this article... it has nothing to do with anything.
  • SOS
Kermode only says these outlandish comments to get noticed, without them he's just a run-of-the-mill review with a crap haircut. End of.
  • Andy
You know what they say about people who live in glass houses. Just put the stone down.
  • drbendy
Kermode is a terrible pseudo-intellectual, but if you look past his almost vomit inducing hubris, he is usually right . True, he hates films that any idiot would hate, but he does concur with a lot of people on here that modern films seem to disregard editing and story. I don't think i like him as a person but i must admit i do listen to his opinions. If he says it's good, i'll give it a go. Hence i probably had the best time in the cinema i've ever had by watching Drag Me To Hell.
  • David
I agree with matt and, erm, Matt. I've never felt the need to comment on slashfilm before but I think the Kermode comment was way off the mark.

His 'infamous' line about matter being satan making its way back to God is, apparently, a reference to 'The Exorcist' novel ('matter was Lucifer upward groping back to his God'). If we're critiquing critics, can I suggest you stop being so damn smug.
  • I have to go against you too Brendon, Kermode is a very entertaining and intelligent critic, I'm extremely surprised at your comments! Oft-addled means mentally confused. Are you sure you don't want to take that back?

"On the matter of Smaug, Guillermo explained that only now, after eight months of design work have they just “cracked the basic engineering.” He suspects that they will need another six or seven months of application there before Smaug is ready for his close up."

I´m giddy just reading this shit. Hope del Toro won´t use too much practical effects on Smaug.
The troll with iron fist in Hellboy was great, but you could see it was a guy in a suit in full body shots and when it was walking. Have never understood del Toros obsession with practical effects when it comes to creatures. I thought after Gollum and Kong he would go all cgi. But ff he can pull off a combination of cgi and 100% believable practical effects I´m on. Please del Toro don´t fuck up Smaug.

The other stuff about the Necromancer is just as cool. Bring on that fucker in his Mirkwood dark tower.
  • Ok. Bad news.

    http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2008/04/25/28747-...

In that interview, Del Toro says:
"The only thing I will be pushing for more in these films that the other three are full animatronics and animatronic creatures enhanced with CGI, as opposed to CGI creatures themselves. We really want to take the state-of-the-art animatronics and take a leap ten years into the future with the technology we will develop for the creatures in the movie. We have every intention to do for animatronics and special effects what the other films did for virtual reality."

So... it doesn't look good for the less practical effects. =\\
  • With Jackson producing this film and owning one of the top Special Effects houses in the world (WETA Digital), I think we can be pretty certain that Smaug will be CG. I mean, look at how good of a job WETA did with the Nazgul's flying steeds (I don't remember if they have a proper name or not). I think Jackson will demand that they use WETA as much as possible because that is part of what made LoTR so breath taking.

Of course, Del Toro wants Pearlman (of course) to play Smaug. I think his voice would be perfect but I hope Del Toro doesn't want him in a suit. Of course, Pearlman apparently no longer wants to do prosthetics so maybe we will luck out.
  • They were called fellbeasts.

I'm with you (as is, I think, everyone else) on hoping Perlman voices Smaug.
  • In the book, I am pretty sure several creatures are called "fell beasts" by various characters (mostly Gandalf, though) throughout the 1000 or so pages. I am pretty sure the Wargs are called that sometime during Two Towers and I think one of the dwarves called the spiders in Mirkwood in The Hobbit fell beasts as well.
  • Johan
You right and I´m certain they will use cgi for the dragon. There is no way they can make the dragon only with puppets, but the question is how much will be cgi and how much practical? del Toro has statet in earlier interviews that he´d like to do as much old school creature work as possible.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
    Now the good stuff.
Frankenstein: I had to Google Doug Jones to make sure he looks the part. He's def tall enough. He's a little on the skinny side, but they're sure to add about 50 pounds of prosthetics. I approve. I will now wait patiently for a modern interpretation of one of my favorite classic novels/movies.
Lovecraft: PLEEEEEEEASE!!! MAKE THIS MOVIE!!! I guess maybe the studio is worried that people will think it's an X-files ripoff because it's dealing with strange creatures discovered in an underground cavern in Antarctica. Whatever.

    Dear Studio,
If you make this happen, I will personally buy every single person credited on the film a Klondike bar. Then after this movie makes you a BILLION dollars, please let Mr. Del Toro adapt more H. P. Lovecraft stories.
    Sincerely,
A huge fan of the strangest mind to ever grace us with his nightmares
  • Really, why isn't anyone funding a Del Toro Lovecraft film? Wake up execs!
  • Colonel_Kurtz
I'm not interested in the Hobbit movies. I never liked Lord of the Rings. The movies were very well done, but I never liked the story.
Blade has pretty much run its course. Leave it be.
I never really got invested in Hellboy. Just like the 1st 2, Hellboy 3 would go on my "see it if there isn't something else I want to see 1st" list.
  • SOS
So why are you commenting on this thread then? Go comment on something you're interested in - like the Twilight Saga or the next Uwe Boll movie.

    "Beat down concluded"
  • Colonel_Kurtz
To answer your question, look about 1/2 an inch farther down this page. You Lord of the Rings fans sure are an endearing group. God forbid different people should have different tastes. Luckily for me, my tastes overlap with the talented Mr. Del Toro's tastes with the obvious exception of Tolkien.
  • Mike
That's a bummer about Perlman. I would think he'd be up for any amount of discomfort to play that character again. I'd rather see Hellboy 3 than The Hobbit or any other flick Del Toro is thinking about making.
  • drbendy
I am looking forward to a tolkein film being without the unconvincing emotion that the LOTR trilogy exhibited. I am interested in a film maker who won't just use hollywood's emotion signifiers, and might just use film as it should be used. A picture can tel a thousand words, Jackson just used sprawling vistas and some really bad Enya to convey character.
  • matt
"oft-addled"? Erm, whilst I don't always agree with him Kermode is an excellent reviewer with consistent opinions and tastes and always gives a reasoned argument for his opinion on a film. Also I'm quite certain he's rather fond of Del Toro.

    So

    1. I'm not sure why it's "lucky" he wasn't there, if anything it would have helped and added to some very insightful and interesting discussion.

    2. Kermode is certainly not "oft-addled"

Seriously unimpressed with the throw away insult directed at a well respected critic.
  • Matt
I've certainly disagreed with Kermode in the past, but he is an intelligent man who deserves recognition for, if nothing else, championing the Devils and working harder than any other critic to try to promote its uncut release.
  • Brandon
Let's hope they confirm Rowan Atkinson for Baggins.
  • Interesting idea, but I still prefer casting Martin Freeman.
  • Oh hell yes.
  • Are you really suggesting Good old Rowan Atkinsons (Mr. Bean) to play Bilbo? How does that fit?

And yeah, Hugo Weaving was a no-brainer for Elrond...and it's awesome news that Doug Jones is going to be Frankestein. Such a great physical actor.
  • Brandon
Just imagine Bean fending off the spiders with Sting, riddling with Gollum, or arguing with Smaug. Best of all...Barrel-rider. This is a solid-gold casting decision.
  • Xaeinovis
Put that shit back on, Perlman! We want another Hellboy! DO IT!

Good to hear Serkis, McKellen, and Weaving are casted.... then again who else would play those roles?
