shia in y: the last man

In a day of superhero overload, Brian K Vaughn’s Y: The Last Man is the perfect comic book series for a Hollywood big screen (or even small screen) adaptation. If you haven’t yet read the series, pick up the paperback (or the new hardcover) of the first volume, as I very highly recommend it.

Disturbia director DJ Caruso has been trying to get the project off the ground for a few years now, and Caruso’s frequent star Shia LaBeouf was interested in starring in a film adaptation. A script was in development, the first in a reported trilogy of adaptations — a potential franchise. But as time has passed, so has Shia’s interest. The Transformers star now tells Wizard Magazine that he’s not currently willing to make the film, and he may be too old for the role by the time that the project does get greenlit.

You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder,” said LaBeouf . “I don’t know if it’s that big a differential. It seems like he’s the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again.” Much like the character of Sam in the Transformers films. He added, “I’m not willing to make that movie currently, and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around.

But isn’t that the character Shia always plays? How was Eagle Eye or Disturbia any different? The reason why LaBouf has a career is being he’s good at playing “the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation.” I really don’t think anyone cares to see Shia as a super-villain, in The Hobbit, or as a special ops team leader in a GI Joe sequel. He is the ordinary guy. And sadly, he is perfect for the role of Yorrick in a Y: The Last Man movie.

The other exciting thing about Shia’s involvement in the project is that it pretty much guaranteed that the film would go into the production. When you have a bankable star attached to proven property, a possible franchise, studios usually jump at that kind of opportunity. But for one reason or another, it just hasn’t happened. And now with Shia’s departure, it seems less likely to go into production any time soon.

Y: The Last Man follows Yorick Brown, a young amateur escape artist, and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand, the last two men on Earth. Something (speculated to be a plague) simultaneously kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome - including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm. Society is plunged into chaos as infrastructures collapse and the surviving women everywhere try to cope with the loss of the men. Yorick goes on a mission to find his girlfriend Beth, who was on vacation in Australia.

Discuss: Who would you want to play Yorrick in a big screen Y: The Last Man Movie?

  • As much as I want to see Anton Yelchin get back to smaller films, I think he could be great for this. And if done well, a film of Y could turn out really really good.
  • jeremy
I was just thinking Anton Yelchin! There are very few other people I could see doing the character justice... even though he's an "ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation." With a big movie like this would certainly be you have to have someone with some star power, and i think in a year or two he'll have it. Yelchin is awesome.
  • I would like to check this series out, but there's like ten volumes and I don't feel like spending that much money on it.
  • Library yo! As someone studying library science I feel obligated to spread the word. And Graphic Novel collections (along with AV) are the fastest growing collections in libraries right now. So check em out!
  • David
This is such a shame. In what is easily one of the best and most well written graphic novels/series ever, LaBeouf could easily find a 'career defining' role. While he is still going to be in all sorts of huge blockbusters (ie: Transformers, Indiana Jones), what you have in Y is a completely character driven story that truly is deep, and has a lot to say about the world and people, where he really could show off acting chops. At the same time, he is so perfect for this role that it would come just as naturally to him to play Yorick as it would for him to yell "No, no, no, no, no, NO!" while being chased by giant robots.
Not to mention the fact that Shia is definitely young enough that even if they do greenlight this in a few years, he could still play the role. Honestly, the material is so good and could span several films, that he would be a fool not to take this role! Why, because a monkey may shit on his shoulder? The story stretches the gambit from sex, violence, drama, love, dealing with society, and so much more, that it makes it way bigger than just an action tentpole for a studio. If it doesn't get made it would be a shame. The only other person I feel that could Yorick's wise cracking dialogue the right way would MAYBE be Ryan Reynolds, but even he doesn't seem as good for the role as Shia. Give it some time, maybe he'll wise up. Either way, this story DEFINITELY deserves to be made in one medium or another...
  • TheMarquis
This story WAS made in "one medium or another"-- it was made as a comic book series.

In other news, I say forgo the movies and follow the dead Preacher route: go to HBO.
  • The
Shia Lebeouf doesn't want to be in Y... GOOD! This is great news! Also, Y would work much better as a trilogy of films (a lot of story to cover) or a HBO miniseries.
  • Peter
Yeah, Shia would have SUCKED as Yorick. I'm super happy and I'll be happier if that hack DJ Caruso doesn't get to direct this.

I'd like to see an adaptation of this, but in movie format it'll likely cut out so much it won't be the same, so I'll rest easy if this is never released.
  • toho
Amen, please keep up this current attitude, Shia. This movie is not for you. Ryan Reynolds? Seriously? Man, the short term memory people have when it comes to casting fanboy roles.
  • David
In terms of fanboy roles, 2 things: 1.) Topher Grace, as mentioned earlier as Eddie Brock? SUCKED! Helped, along with Sam Raimi and Sony, to RUIN Venom. 2.) As for Reynolds? Is it not safe to say that he nailed the role and vibe of Wade Wilson? FOX ruined the character of Deadpool, but as for his portrayal as a smart mouth mercenary? I think he worked out well
  • Hmm, this is a tough one from the moment I first read the news I thought Shia would be perfect to play Yorrick but now that he's out I don't know if there's another young bankable star that could play that role. Perhaps Chris Pine I guess.
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt should be Yorick. I am a huge fan of Y: The Last Man and I never did like Shia for this project.
  • toho
Finally, a good suggestion, although Anton Yelchin sounds good, in reality that would bust. Gordon-Levitt, on the other hand, would be awesome with this. Then again, so would Henry Thomas
  • edog
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was my first thought too. And I like the HBO miniseries idea.
  • bingo. I'd rather watch Joseph over shia any day.
  • STG
Joseph Gordon Levitt was the first name I thought of when I heard the gr8 news that Shia is not interested.
  • Joseph Gordon Levitt would be..awesome actually.
  • bb6640
    I second that! Good choice!
  • rnl
    I third that, great casting.
  • I thought Shia would have been perfect. Ryan Reynolds is probably too old, but the other commentors' suggestion of Yelchin sounds good to me.
  • booger
Wow, the idea of an HBO miniseries or even a regular cable TV series is genius. There really is so much source material to cover, I don't think a movie would be able to do this justice. They could make every paperback volume into one episode, it would be perfect!

I've never particularly favored Shia as Yorick... but I don't really have anyone else in mind, either so I guess I'm not one to talk. I do think that there must be a better fit for this really great character, though.
  • Oh thank goodness, LaBeouf can't pull off Yorick. He can pull off being hammy and bland but definitely not a character so likable. Some peopl are saying Yelchin and i honestly haven't seen much of his work but in Star Trek he was pretty awful with the impersonation especially in contrast to the rest of the cast's stellar performances.

Ryan Reynolds could be good and he might not be too old. I mean, Yorick could be played anything from mid-late 20's right? He is charismatic but maybe too mouthy.
Oh, please no one say emille hirsch.
  • Ryan Reynolds was actually the first person I thought of playing this part. I never even pictured LaBeouf.
  • Dog Doctor
Shia should not be in any movies period. I've never seen a movie where he didn't look like an out of place actor instead of a character. He looks like he's 12.
  • THANK GOD!!!!!
  • Lawdog
Not to jump on the bash Shia bandwagon or anything, but good. I had to check IMDB to see if he's been the lead in anything I liked. No, he hasn't. That's right, I didn't like Transformers. I'm a "hater". He wasn't even really the lead in Transformers anyway. That honor goes to the blurry robots. He was good as Neo's sidekick in Constantine, and he was ok as the Fresh Prince's sidekick in I, Robot. Those were his two best movies, and they weren't exactly pictures of the year. Sorry, he just hasn't earned bankable box office star status with me. As Bruce Campbell might say, he's a SIIIIIIIIIIIDEKICK.

Ok, that came out a little bashy. I really don't have anything against the guy. I think he's a decent enough actor. I just don't see why he suddenly became "the next big thing."
  • hard target- awesome
That is awesome!!!! i do actually like shia lebouff but he was the wrong choice for this and D.J. Caruso does not have the skill to pull off Y. It actually seems that this might have a chance. I would still prefer a miniseries but as long as shia and caruso are not involved i'am happy.
  • kingjimbo
I agree about Ryan Reynolds. Not only does he look the part, he's got the whole smarmy sarcastic, but good-hearted thing down. He's a little bit older than Yorick in Hollywood years (a lot older in real life) but I think he would be great for the role. I've always thought he was a talented actor with a terrible agent getting him the worst roles possible.

Also, gotta get DJ Caruso off of this. He's not a hack, Disturbia wasn't as good as it got credit for, but still not terrible, and Eagle Eye wasn't as bad as people said, but still far from good. But the truth is, he's just a decent director. This story deserves an amazing director. Pipe dream: Alfonso Cuaron.
  • Travis McGee
Ryan Reynolds looks nothing like the character of Yorrick Brown!
I always thought Topher Grace looked the part. just think of his character from That 70's Show...
  • mcgruff
yep. i thought ryan reynolds would be perfect the first time i read the Graphic novel
  • JasonSTL
Thank God, he would of made the character laughable. Good riddance, LaDouche.
  • Dr. Handsome
I don't mind LaBeouf as an actor at all but I never saw him as this character.

The title character of the TV show Chuck (played extremely well by Zachary Levi) is basically the main character from Y: the Last Man. They've even had Levi reading the comic on the show which I'm sure isn't a coincidence. If anything look at Levi's performance for a good idea of who should play this character.
  • Outuendo
I have nothing really against Shia but he just isn't Yorick at all. I've thought Ryan Gosling since i read the first trade. He has definite acting chops and thats what this movie needs. But i could see Ryan Reynolds or Anton Yelchin, although i don't know how Anton would pull off the anger that comes with some of the emotion in this book.
  • [A]
This is good news. If that hack isn't interested in Y anymore, then I am. Again.
  • Max
I think that Chris Evans would do the character justice...
  • David
Wow. Good call! Didn't even think of that one! Definitely has the wise-cracking attitude and a solid track record with dealing with women on screen(see both FF movies as Johnny Storm)
  • David
What is the deal with all of you saying Anton Yelchin would be perfect!? This guy doesn't seem to have one shred of masculinity in ANY of his performances! That does include Terminator Salvation as well. He SUCKED in Star Trek and was horribly mediocre in TS. Other than that, what has he been in that would garner him to star in a story like this? OK actor, but would never get it done. Let's also not forget, the story of Y would also have to be INCREDIBLY dependent on its female leads. Obviously you have to get Yorick right, but the women have to be cast well too! Oh yeah, and Ampersand should be real. No doubt...
  • nelson
    Reynolds/Levi/Evans? WTF

you know the character i suppose to be like 22 or 23 at the most right
  • Thank. Fucking. God.
  • Jd123
I can see why he wouldn't want to do this film anymore, even though I would love to see him in this. His schedule is pretty busy with filming both the associate and walstreet 2 in the coming months.. And as far as his acting goes I think he is a very talented young actor, I recomend everyone check out A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Shia realy breaks out with this role, and you can't blame him for straying away from to similar of roles even if this made him famous, I think he and DJ are very close and if DJ realy wanted Shia to do this, he would,
  • Chuck Joseph Gordon Levitt, keep it as either a trilogy or a TV mini-series and you're done. Greatness on a stick.
  • Zach Bob
How long would it take to do? I mean LaBeouf is like, what, 22? Isn't Yorick 26 by the end? I don't like him for the role but that seems a silly reasoning. If he shaved his glued on pubes beard off he would look like a teenager.

They should get him to play Ampersand ala Andy Serkis in King Kong.
  • drmecha
best bloody news I've heard all day.
I'd rather them not make the movie at all than have Yorkick be played by Shia LeBeouf.
    My vote: Topher Grace.
  • The_Kid
I like the idea of Joseph Gordon Levitt in the role of Yorick, he seems like a good choice for the role. I'm surprised Shia doesn't want to do this. Maybe he's is tired of working with DJ Caruso, who has done his last two films with him. DJ give the kid a break.
  • Alex
More importantly, Gina Torres as Agent 355. Anyone? Anyone?
  • I'm sure plenty of people have said it but... this is great news!!!!

Shia never felt right for this to me. I don't have anything against the guy like some, just didn't feel like Yorick. Nor really looked the part either. Yorick is essentially a Peter Parker type, wisecracking for sure, a pop culture geek full of useless knowledge.

And if Shia's using the "ordinary guy" remark as a negative then he doesn't get the character or the story, so good. And the age thing ain't an issue. In the books the brunt of the story goes from about age 22 - 28.

Now we just need Caruso off the project.
  • Paul Dano.
He was awesome in "There Will Be Blood" and "Ms. Sunshine". He has the acting chops and he's unknown enough that it won't distract from the character. Also, he's the right age and a good combo of dork and normal.

I loved the comic books and think it would be great as an HBO series or a trilogy, they would gut it if they try to make it a single movie, kind of like they did with "Watchmen".
  • only read the first trade, but i thought it was ridiculously overrated. i have it on good (ok, all) authority that the work in its entirety is a masterpiece though so maybe i need to give it more of a chance. but the first story arc is pretty unremarkable imho.

it does seem odd that labeouf is desperate to get out of the everyman pigeon-hole so soon...
  • outuendo
You can't just judge off the first trade. That just sets everything up and explains whats happened. When you keep reading there are so many more twists and turns to the story that keep you reading and thinking about it. This story is more about building a relationship with the characters so you care about what happens to them. So if you give up on it after the first book you're really losing out on the further adventures that the main trio has with each other.
  • LuMendz
Came in here to say "More chances for Joseph Gordon-Levitt!" and "HBO series" but I guess that's pretty much already the general idea here. Screw Shia.
