Last month is was revealed that commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch was attached to direct a remake of Alien. We have since learned that it is more of a prequel than a remake. I was one of the few people actually interested in Rinsch’s involvement. Rinsch’s commercials show an amazing sense of imagination, visual effects artistry and composition (we’ve profiled his amazing commercials on the site). Ridley Scott is said to be involved with producing the sequel, which leads us to believe it, at very least, has to be better than the last two Alien vs. Predator films. But apparently 20th Century Fox isn’t happy with the choice of director.

According to Entertainment Weekly (via playlist), Fox has yet to approve Rinsch for the prequel, even though Tony and Ridley Scott have given the filmmaker final approval. Fox apparently wants Ridley to return to helm the movie, which seems very unlikely at this point. To complicate things further, EW claims that Rinsch is not only Scott’s protege, a commercial director for Scott’s company RSA, but he is also romantically involved with Ridley’s daughter Jordan. So basically, he’s “in the family.”

I’m not sure that Rinsch will produce an Alien film on the level of Scott’s original or James Cameron’s sequel, but I do know that he’s better than 99% of other possible choices. Fox needs to learn to give their “artists” more creative control. The movie studio’s constant “micro-managing” and “second guessing” has been blamed for the studio’s trail of lackluster film releases.

seems like a good horse to bet on, and with the Scott’s at the helm of the ship, why not just step back and see what the talented artists might develop?

  • ha, when Fox doesn't want you to direct it. That says something.
  • It probably says hes a good director :)
  • Indeed. Ask yourself WWFD, What Would Fox Do. Then you should do the exact opposite.
  • So what does that make Ridley Scott then?
  • Some questions should remain unanswered.
  • DRF
    Amen to that.
  • this has david fincher and alien 3 written all over it.

Credit due to Fox for actually trying to get Ridley on board, however it looks like Carl has the creative flair and i am sure as he is "in family" he will be getting a few pointers anyway.

So its a win win, Ridley is indirectly involved, we get to see a potentialy brilliant Alien film told with some artistic flair from a budding new director.

As long as they dont do a Alien 3 and get to involved

So, uh, basically this just means the Alien prequel will be tied up until Fox exhausts Ridley's involvement and eventually hires a really shit director... Ugh.
  • stg
Fox is quite possibly the worst studio out there, which has produced some of the most shitty movies and adaptions.
  • Which sucks, cause they have good concepts.
  • stg
    *adaptations I mean :)
  • I would prefer Ridley to direct over almost anyone, but if they're going to drag it out until neither of the two is involved, then I'd rather FOX just give up on this. Considering the craptastic sequels and spin-offs they've churned out of late, I'd sleep a lot easier.

Ridley would be a dream choice, but it's high time to smell the wakeup juice.
  • thankyoufor
I dont car who directs it (between those two)
    i jsut dont want,
    "THE STRAUSE BROTHERS"
    anywhere near this
  • I'm really angry that there's even an Alien remake. WTF is wrong with these Hollywood studio bastards. Nobody else can replace Ellen Ripley.
  • thankyoufor
    Agreed
Alien is my FAvorite movie "OF ALL TIME"
an the fact that there even messing with it more makes me angry
next there going to remake, Jaws and then Citizens Kane
  • Actually, they recently confirmed it's not a "remake" but a prequel before Alien itself.
  • Fox is desperate, that's what!
  • The_Kid
Fox can suck it, sure Ridley is a great director and I can see why they would want him for the job. But if Ridley and Tony thinks this new guy is the right choice, then I say trust them because they are definitely creditable.
  • bomberman
what other classic is on the chop block guys?

    take a guess
  • ziggi
its like having 3 scotts working on it instead of one.
what part of 'FTW!' doesnt fox understand?
  • Brian Rodden
It seems like you're pretty confident in commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch. Of course they want Ridley Scott back because Alien rocked. I don't really know this guy's work, but hopefully he'll do a good job...if he gets it.
  • I must admit I have alwasy kinda been itnerested in the idea of the Alien homeworld and it would be great to see how it all begain as think that is wehre the prequeal will go
  • Johan
That is Fox first good decision in years! Why would they choose another nobody and hand him the keys to another film of the biggest sci-fi franshise in the universe? They did it with all the directors after Aliens not to mention the avp movies and all failed. Sounds like a wise choice to want to have Ridley himself helming the prequel.
  • Imagine if you're Carl Erik Rinsch. Sucks to be him. (besides being in Hollywood..working with the Scott brothers...)
  • RPK
I'm in 100 percent agreement with FOX on this one. Ridley Scott should direct. If any studio has seen what a shitty director can do to an established franchise, its FOX.

All of this drama surrounding films, most of the time, ends up ruining the film as stated in this article. This is starting to worry me. Please don't ruin Aliens anymore!
  • But Peter, at the same time, look at what happened when Fox trusted Gavin Hood (who was a really good Oscar-winning indie director) with Wolverine??? For god's sake, he's even in Anonymous Content group...

Again, I totally agree with you that giving young talented commercial directors a chance is a really good idea (Joe Kosinski) but look at the other side too
  • Man, I would actually like that. Not many creators of a francise STAY with a francise through the whole thing. I know he's producer (which is already good) but directer would be awesome, for not many directors are really to "clean up" there francise after such a long time.

    Other than George Lucas. Ohhh...:(

Again, the shittiness of Wolverine can be blamed a lot on Fox... but you know any good director could have fixed a lot of stuff that was already there if you know what I mean.

well, i think ridley and tony have the power to say "f-u fox, he's doin it. and then we'll get our Neil Blomkamp HALO movie as well, once this is (hopefully)successful....eh?

LEAVE THE WHOLE THING BE. ALIEN WAS A GREAT MOVIE. THE REST WERE NOTHING. FOX HAVE RUINED A GREAT BRAND ALREADY.DON'T LET THEM KILL IT COMPLETELY
