Comedy Central Orders 26 New Episodes of Futurama

futurama

In yesterday’s Page 2, we referred to a rumor from Collider that Comedy Central had ordered 13 new episodes of the animated series Futurama. Today, we’re hearing from a variety of sources that Futurama is not only back, but that Comedy Central has ordered 26 new episodes. The episodes are scheduled to begin airing in mid-2010.

This is not the first time such a revival has taken place, as many of you will probably remember Family Guy’s resurrection after monstrously strong DVD sales. According to 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden:

When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing — that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived. But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell.

Futurama’s existence has been a curious one, plagued with stops and starts, and constantly threatened by the Damoclean sword of cancellation. After a few seasons were broadcast on Fox, the show was ignominiously taken off the air. Reruns on Adult Swim helped propel the show back into the popular consciousness, prompting a series of straight-to-DVD films to be produced by Fox (which were then aired on Comedy Central).

I’ve loved Futurama since it first aired on Fox, and while I wasn’t a huge fan of some of post-series films, I was thrilled at the fact that the show was coming back in any form. In particular, the direct-to-DVD model seemed to be an exciting one, both commercially and artistically. If a vocal fan base could continue to enjoy a show through such means, surely it might have implications for the entertainment industry as a whole? In any case, the last film in the series, Into the Wild Green Yonder, was treated by Futurama creators David Cohen and Matt Groening as though it would be the finale. While Cohen held out hope that there would be more Futurama, he didn’t know what form that might take until now.

One of the biggest issues I had with the DVD films was that they felt disjointed. Each film was obviously written with syndication in mind, and had four distinct 22-minute segments. With the exception of Bender’s Big Score, none of them really cohered as a whole for me. Here’s hoping that without the constraints of the DVD/film format, we’ll see Futurama return to the greatness of seasons 3-5.

    sweet pleasant christ, yes.

Oh. My. God. This made my day.. :D
  • Great news, loved the show.
  • Adam
    Good news, everyone!
  • YES! YES YES YES YES YES!

    Let's add 3 more seasons to those 26 episodes. ;) :D
  • Let's all party and get naked!! whoo!! uhh I mean..Yeah! great news!..
  • Palmer
That's some good news. Surprised you didn't start off with "good news everyone!" But then again, has Comedy Central officially announced anything?
  • Zach
Not news for me. I remember reading about how the movies were a lead-in to them reviving the series on Comedy Central. Each movie coming six months after the last and then Futurama taking South Park's slot. Of course it's possible that I imagined all that.
  • It was never really a constraint of the dvd/film format. Benders Big Score was proof of that. The problem was, as you said, that each movie after that was written to be split up into individual episodes. Had they continued making them like Bender's Big Score, I think they would have been a lot better but they also would have a harder time airing them on TV.

It's also not really fair for you to be comparing them to the BEST episodes of the series. They had 70+ episodes to create such gems like "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings" and "The Sting".

This is a beautiful day indeed, :)
  • Ok. So Futurama is back. I'm glad. Any chance another network, perhaps Sci-Fi/Syfy, could bring back two other canceled Fox series? I would absolutely love for Firefly and Terminator to come back.
  • Zach
Firefly will never comeback :( Proof of that was the movie. Terminator has a chance, but I think that new Ron Moore show will have a bigger chance. Seeing as how Fox is premiering the pilot on the 4th of July, I don't see Fox keeping it too long.
  • Josh
Oh I hope it does come back. I have said it before and I will say it again, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was one of the best written shows on television. It needs to come back.
  • Woooo now just Veronica Mars on my list of must be brought backs.
  • Now that that's announced, let's just hope it doesn't do "The Family Guy."

And if you don't know what that means, look up. It IS that simple.
  • Great news. Now bring back Arrested Development.
  • i was in the angry dome when they ended their run (movies too).........now its time to pull up a groove and get fabulous....
  • I'm happy, you're happy, we're all happy.

    Good news indeed sirs.
  • sweet jebus, pinch me. =D
  • I own all of the TV seasons on DVD and am a huge fan, although I have to agree that a lot of their 'feature length' offerings seemed to me to be uninspired, disjointed, and lacking in what made the series great in the first place... Here's hoping that the new episodes live up to the series' former greatness!
  • Schneid Remarks
I actually enjoyed the first and last films, and I felt that Into the Wild Green Yonder was a suiting end to the series. I'm not sure how much I'm looking forward to them taking up from the point the last film left off.

    SWEET ZOMBIE JESUS!
  • Can't wait to hear those immortal words of wisdom once again:

    "Kiss my shiny metal ass!"
  • the best news ive heard from /film in a while.
  • That's some of the best news I've heard in weeks--maybe months. Futurama had some of the best writing of any comedy in the past decade (animated or otherwise). Bender kicks ass!
  • Oh my various gods!

Awesome news. Futurama was always waaaaaaay more deserving of uncancellation than Family Guy.
  • bomberman
i nearly cried reading this today
  • Someguy
    YESYESYESYESYESYES!
  • wow about time!!!
  • Infrafan
The only drawback is that Comedy Central is getting them, but only a mild inconvenience for the return of one of the greatest animated shows ever. To quote the robot keg, "Don't stop."
  • perry
    how is this movie news?
  • YES!!! next up firefly and pushing daisies...in my dreams.
  • Cypher
