Puss in Boots

When DreamWorks Animation updated their 2009-2012 line-up a couple weeks back, it was revealed that the Puss in Boots spin-off movie would be an origin story. The official synopsis reads:

“Swords will cross and hearts will be broken in this adventure starring one of the most beloved characters of the Shrek universe - Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas). It’s a swashbuckling ride through Puss’s early years as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty and the street-savvy Kitty (Salma Hayek) to steal the famed Goose that lays the Golden Eggs.”

We didn’t expect Shrek, Fiona or Donkey to appear (after all — it’s an origin story, before they met), but screenwriter David H Steinberg confirms to Moviehole that the film will not feature any returning characters from the previous Shrek films at all, with the exception of Puss, of course!

“It doesn’t overlap with Shrek at all. Partly that was done to tell an original Puss story, but partly because we didn’t know what Shrek 4 (and now Shrek 5) were going to do with the characters and we couldn’t write conflicting storylines.”

So at the end of the day, the spin-off might turn out to be more original than first expected. Dreamworks has decided not to rely on franchise cameos, as not to hurt the Shrek sequels currently in production. Now if only the Katzenberg-directed aniamtion studio would forego the cheesy pop culture references for a story that is worth more than a few pennies. Directed by Shrek the Third helmer Chris Smith, Puss in Boots is scheduled to hit theaters on March 20th 2012.

  • meh.
  • DreamWorks. Here's this leaf from Pixar's book I found. STOP with the cultural references, they date the film horribly. Slapstick, puns, do whatever but do not reference anything. Look at Aladdin, great movie but I barely know half the impressions that the Genie does.
  • Shrek Origins: Puss in Boots
  • Emm
Last two films were horrific. Jokes were unfunny, and just left me rolling my eyes the whole time. I'm glad they put away shrek, I can't sit through another one of the same thing. Puss was alright i guess, I'll take it over shrek. I guess he has the most potential from the films. Just dont do that cute eye thing too many times, it gets old fast.

Focus on a good solid story, not on the jokes.
  • I love my films have not achieved this I fell in love with these films do not have such a good bishop, or have a very compelling and emotional aspects
  • Puss in Boots was the funniest character in the Shrek franchise (haha Shrek is a franchise now). And I'd rather this than Madagascar 3.

    ugh...no thanks

get them all back on board. they could always shoot him in the head with a silver coloured bullet to erase his memory ; )
  • The last two films were abysmal though Puss was the best character. If they are going to give anyone a spin off (Not saying they should, simply if they are going to), it should be Puss. Glad to see new characters as well. Maybe this will be something fresh.
  • I agreed. I watched Aladdin for the first time since 1994 or 95, on TV last year in Saudi Arabia and I couldn't believe how quickly dated all the jokes were. Kids who were born TODAY will NOT understand the jokes if they watch the film in 10 years.
  • Puss in boots was one of the more tolerable and funny at time characters from Shrek. The Gingerbread man also made me laugh a couple of times.

Funny how none of the main characters were remotely funny (Eddie Murphy voicing that Donkey got annoying real quick) and relied on the side characters to do more of the comical pushing.

There's definitely the opening for a pretty comical origin story or it can turn into another "meh" Dreamwork's film.
  • Puss was funny but not Full Length Feature Funny.
  • Better than Shrek or that Donkey.
