Interest in Ghostbusting is at fever pitch, and the imminent launch of the original Ghostbusters film on Blu-Ray and the tie-in videogames must have something to do with it. All the same, genuine interest in the franchise is as high as any time in the last 20 years, at least, and stories revolving around the upcoming third installment are piling up thick and fast. After the break, a few bullet points that should bring you up to speed and, most excitingly, a look at what appears to be the first dialogue exchange from the next movie to become public knowledge. I’ll also toss in a fantastic rumour I’ve been hearing, but haven’t been able (yet) to substantiate. What fun would leaving it out be, though?

  • The screenplay by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitksy still hasn’t been delivered yet, but is imminent. A running-draft or treatment has been at least shared with Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis because they’ve gone on to discuss it with the rest of us (see below, for example).
  • Ivan Reitman has told MTV that, actually, he’s willing to think about directing the next Ghostbusters film. Aykroyd had previously named Ramis as his pick to take the director’s chair if Reitman was “too busy”.
  • A five-way jury hold veto over any Ghostbusters film. Reitman is one party, three more are Murray, Ramis and Aykroyd, and the fifth is Columbia Pictures. If any of these want to nix the project, they can. It seems this would also apply to films that the individual would not be involved in - say, if Reitman wasn’t set to direct, or one of the actors not set appear, they could still wield the axe.
  • I was sent an e-mail from a source inside the industry who wanted to relate a little Ghostbusters 3 gossip. According to them, Jake Kasdan wants the directing gig. As in actively wants it and, I would assume, is pursuing it. If the job was mine to give, I’d be putting a bow on it for him now.
  • Empire magazine published the following passage in which Harold Ramis appears to share the first line of dialogue from the film.

I’m intrigued by my idea for where Egon has been. He’s been working in the International Institute For Imaginary Science, in Geneva. He’s evolved a post-rational, non-conclusive logic for dealing with problems of chaos. Someone asks him ‘What does that mean?’ and he says ‘There are no spatial, conceptual or intellectual models to describe it - so we don’t know.’ Egon’s gone so abstract, even he doesn’t know what he’s doing!

  • In the same article, Aykroyd says that “hopefully [Alyssa] Milano will be playing the same character she does in the game”. That’s Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn, who they describe as a “love interest”. That he then mentions Eliza Dushku, directly after this, suggests that they would not be competing for the same role.

Lots more news must be just around the corner, I’m sure. Watch this space.

"Reitman is one party, three more are Murray, Ramis and Aykroyd, and the fifth is Columbia Pictures."
    lol, poor Ernie Hudson
  • vva
Haha... hey! Ernie just wants the work!
  • Mola Rambo
"Ah, if there's a steady paycheck in it, I'll believe anything you say..."
  • "post-rational, non-conclusive logic" - he didn't come up with that, 90% of imdb-message board-posters already follow that logic.
  • me me mem
    ghostbusters are soooooooooooooooo old.
  • Solid
No, they're soooooooooo distinguished and mature.
  • Eliza Dushku :(
  • Just make this good. That's all I ask.
  • Who Ha
There's always one location I wanted to see in a GB sequel : Ze Upper Vest Side?
  • Fever pitch, Brendon? Really? Maybe "greatly heightened interest," but I wouldn't exactly call it a fever pitch. Maybe when it starts trending on Twitter...

That said, I'm glad to hear that each of the principals has veto power. That should ensure this thing goes ahead only if the quality is up to par. Plus, they'll all want to bring their "A" game (granted, Aykroyd hasn't had one in 20 years, but regardless...) because they can't blame it on anyone else if this thing blows.

Finally, Jake Kasdan would be great for this, methinks. Sign him up immediately!
  • I have read a new Ghostbusters 3 article every 3 hours. Or, more accurately, at least 4 a day. It's silly!
  • Why So Serial?
It's Brendon. You gotta take the bad with the....uh..... bad.
  • This could come out as a mix of Blues Brothers 2000 and Crystal Skull. I hope not but I'm not overly confident. If recent events have taught me anything it's to keep my expectations low.
  • danno
The whole propostition sounds a little stale. Waaaaaait - Alyssa Milano?
  • I hope Eliza Dushku gets a part. She is so hot and i think she would be a cool ghostbuster. She is alredy a cool vampire slayer.
  • jeremy
Ugh. more talk of milano and dushku!! :(
  • But he has Dragonball Evo? 4 mil in an entire weekend! YAY ERNIE!
  • Jake Kasdan directing? Yes please!
  • I like the old idea of using the Apatow crew. I just watched Freaks and Geeks and I can pretty much see any of those actors playing awesome would-be Ghostbusters....
  • Happy 25th guys...let's leave Milano and Dushku out of the third.
  • Pete (original)
    Milano and Dushku? why?!
  • I dont know about the whole sequal thing , lately it hasnt worked except for the dark knight. Maybe a fresh approach to the gostbuster brand needs to be made.
  • There's a pretty good interview with Ackroyd and Ramis in the latest Playstation magazine. They mostly talk about the game, but there's a little about the possible movie as well.
  • Dorkman
Why is the assumption that that's the first line of dialogue? It could be anywhere in the film. If it's in there at all.
  • Gb
    Awesome!

    Who ya gonna call
  • Jake Kasdan? Seriously? That's the worst idea I've heard since...well that's just the worst idea I've ever heard, actually.
  • Arturo Jimenez
Honestly, I can write a much better script than the one the studio is planning, yes maybe a new generation could be included, but don't forget that the old cast by now should be very good at their jobs!! Too many big names could ruin the movie, and also the idea of the double Manhattan is kind of lame! I would write something different than the end of the world in every movie! I would include down the earth ghost characters like the boogeyman and the other ghost that use a flute to put you to sleep in those cartoons from the 80's Something people can relate to from the past including the four main characters!
