Pixar Confirms Monsters Inc Sequel?

Monsters Inc

At the licensing fair in Las Vegas, Disney/Pixar revealed to buyers behind closed doors that they have yet another sequel in the works. Despite what Brad Bird said on stage at WonderCon two years ago, Pixar is now in the sequel business. Cars 2, Toy Story 3, and now Monsters Inc 2. According to Jim Hill, buyers who attended these limited preview sessions were sworn to secrecy by Disney officials, but several have confirmed that Pete Docter will be following up Up with a sequel to Monsters, Inc.

A Monsters Inc sequel has been rumored for some time now. At Comic-Con 2008, director Pete Docter responded to an audience question about the prospects of a sequel by admitting that “We’ve thought about it… We’ve got a couple ideas.” And now that it is quasi-confirmed, when should we expect to return to Monstropolis? Pixar has announced all their films up until 2012, so could a Monsters Inc sequel be in store for 2013?

Pixar fansite The Pixar Blog started receiving strange searches this past January for variations of “‘monsters 2013 pixar”. The interesting thing about the searches is that they were coming from inside Pixar, from the Pixar.com domain. I know, circumstantial at best. But now that we know a sequel is definitely in the works, it seems a bit more likely that it’s being groomed for a 2013 release.

Pixar has a great record with sequels so far. Toy Story 2 is one of the best reviewed movies of all time according to Rotten Tomatoes. Truth is, I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel to Monsters, Inc. Docter’s return says a lot for the project, and definitely is a vote of confidence from the original creative team. The only other Pixar film I’m remotely interested in seeing sequalized is The Incredibles. But with Brad Bird trying to get his live-action adaptation of 1906 off the ground, that isn’t likely to happen in the next four or five years, at very least.

  • more often than not im opposed to sequels, but im not even mad,
  • It would be nice if they did a sequel to 'The Incredibles'...
  • William
There is so much they could do in 'The Incredibles' universe!

But with Pixar's track record, we have no need to fear!

The first Monsters is one of my favorites, and I'm sure any sequel will be most esquisite.

i thought i read on this site that an incredibles sequel was in the works..? i certainly could be wrong though.
  • Nick
You notice the most original, brilliant voices inside Pixar, Andrew Stanton and Brad Bird, are now doing live action projects outside of Pixar...

I love Pixar, and the previously mentioned directors' last two films are masterpieces, but Cars fucking sucked, and while Toy Story 3 seemed inevitable given Disney's urging for it, the rest are fucking cop outs, unncessary and unoriginal. I understand a movie a year is a lot to do, but they've got amazing people to come up with ideas, and it's a shame they're resorting to sequel territory.
  • Is this what Disney ownership has done to them?
  • /ambient
    yeah, less sequels more originality.
  • Can you name a company more original than Pixar?
  • mangos
i've actually noticed that a lot of their upcoming movies are missing those key people. I kinda see Up as possibly the last original/special movie from them for a while.
  • So you've seen the future? I trust Pixar under the watch of Lasseter implicitly.
  • Joe
Other than Cars 2, these sequels will have had, respectively, 11 and 12 years between them and their previous installments. What was the famous quote about Pixar: "We only do a sequel if we know that the story will work"? Was it "We only do sequels if they work right?"

It's not money grubbing if they want to revisit worlds they created over a decade ago, in my opinion. They'll still have original movies every other year (actually, they're going up to 2 per year in some cases).

Dave - for a 21 year old, the insight in all your comments is wise and oh-so-true... I cannot agree with you more Big Guy. :)
  • Being that Monsters, inc. is my favorite Pixar film, i'm overly delighted! Up being my second favorite.
  • I suppose this is good news. I remember a few months back talking to someone on here about possibilities about a sequel to Monsters Inc. I thought it was possible but that there really isn't a reason to do it because where would the story go? I have no idea but I do have faith in the Pixar team to create another great movie.
  • Why can't they make a sequel to The Incredibles (the obvious choice). I love monsters inc and wouldnt mind a sequel but I can't imagine what possible story they could tell.
  • maracle
im fine with a monters sequel, just hope they stay away from another cars movie.
  • Too late, it's in production.
  • Hopefully it's a redemptive move. Cars was good, but not up to their standard. I watched it a second time, and liked it a little more. I think the first 30 minutes are great, but then it realllllyyyy draggggggssssssssssssss s......
Hopefully they'll keep this one shorter, and more in tone to those first 30 minutes.
  • josh
but cars is a freakin awsome movie, you idiot!
  • RMM
Stanton and Bird are still very much involved in Pixar as the Senior staff. They're just doing things they want to do outside of the company because the things they want to do don't fit with what Pixar stands for. They're going for more adult.

The only one I'm not excited for is Cars 2. But they know the luke warm response they got from the first Cars and I seriously doubt they'd be making a second one unless the story was absolutely great.

    long live john goodman /films
  • All of these movies will do well regardless of it being a sequel. It's Pixar, and the amount of detail and work that goes into each one of their movies is evident in the final product. I highly doubt that they will cut corners just because the movie is a sequel, meaning that we will get high quality story and animation with the same characters that we've seen before.
  • agreed. But I hope they don't abandon their originality.
  • Sues
While I still have little doubt that Monsters, Inc 2 will deliver, based almost entirely on the same complete faith in Pixar I have that everyone else seems to as well, it still saddens me that with this, Toy Story 3, and Cars 2, Pixar will have ever more in common with their sequel-cranking, originality-shunning competitors. Cars 2 is the only one I feel like will suck, because the person directing it was formerly a producer, and it is clearly being made because Cars made an assload from merchandise.

Also, I think we're forgetting that after Cars 2, we're getting two original movies, newt and The Bear and the Bow. This isn't the end of originality in Pixar yet.

And I think we can be patient about an Incredibles sequel. Toy Story 2, after all, came out 10 years ago. If The Incredibles 2 came out in 2014 or even 2020, I'd be perfectly happy.
  • I was just thinking the other day when more Toy Story 3 information was released, that the only sequels I would like to see would be one for The Incredibles, as that is still my favorite Pixar film next to Monsters Inc. However, I don't think there should be a sequel to Monsters Inc. Cars was bad, and it was already bad enough that they were creating a sequel to it. I like Toy Story, but again, same thing with Monsters Inc. I was just arguing with my friend earlier about how Pixar is beginning to make sequels because they don't have to do as much work, and can easily cash out.
  • I don't think it's so much cashing out as it is supplying the demand for these sequels. I mean, my kid is in love with Cars and there is merchandise flying off shelves even now. I don't blame them for making these and I can tell you right now that I'll probably be watching every single one of them more than once.

I would much rather pixar spend their time making a sequel to the incredibles
  • Bobby
Personally I don't mind. Monsters Inc was one of the best Pixar films and I always expected a sequel because of the ending but after Pixar said no sequels I threw that concept out. Toy Story is easily Pixars biggest brand name and Pixar proved they can do proper sequels with Toy Story 2. Cars 2 on the other hand has to be solely off merchandising which I don't understand why of all Pixar movies that gets a sequel. The 1st cars is usually unanimously called Pixar's worst movie and it didn't shatter the box office. Most Cars money came from the toy and video game lines as well as DVD and Blu Ray Sales and other merchandise so I just don't see why Disney didn't just keep going down the routh with Cars they were already travelling and that was constantly releasing more Cars merchandise.
  • While I would rather see something new from them, it's not as if they're pumping out 2-3 films a year. They still put a lot of time and effort into their work.
  • Unfortunately, the reality is that Jim Hill has a great reputation in the Disney community for being wrong far more than he's right. And this has even less legs than his usual claims.

as for Pixar Blog searches, that really doesn't amount to much either. it could be someone who heard a rumor trying to find out for themselves too.

    So consider the source.
  • Alex
I liked Monsters, Inc. so I'm not totally opposed to this, but the ending was so perfect. I'd rather it just be left there, to be honest. But heck, if the sequel is good, who cares?
  • Who Ha
As long as Boo isn't all grown up a la Andy in Toy Story 3. Her laughter and adorable mispronunciation were essential to the magic.
  • badenglish
    where is incredibles 2 :@
  • YES! Can't wait....But, I agree with badenglish as I'm sure with others --Where the hell is Incredibles 2!!!
  • Dylan
    Cars 2 will be terrible.
  • josh
no it wont you idiots!cars was a great movie with lots of classic cars, so listen to this, i HOPE that they make a new one!and besides, monsters inc was good, but not even their best, pixar should definitly make a second cars!!!!!!
  • LuMendz
Incredibles 2! Come on Pixar! You ended it so openly with limitless possibilities! Pretty much everyone is waiting for you guys to announce it already.
  • So is it possible that this is the end of the golden age of Pixar? Woth Bird, Lasseter and Stanton now doing other stuff, much of the hyped core is leaving. These sequels could be good but the fact that they are becoming more and more frequent troubles me. Monsters Inc is one of the most wrapped up films they made. Up is the last in this streak of original concepts and it could very well be the end of an era.

I'm not saying it will, just that it may.
  • josh
but Up was really good you moron, so why would it be the end, duhhhhhh
  • I love Monster, Inc. However, Disney sequels are not always the best. The only two that I can think of that were good were "Toy Story 2" and "Lion King 1 1/2"
  • what a bout a prequel? showing Sully and Mike growing into there respective jobs... i'm not saying making it the whole movie, but it shows how they got to where they are, then shows the progression of the story line after he see's Boo again? i'm just throwing it our there.
  • Joe
I think this might have been the infamous "Brave" that was leaked earlier from Pixar...
  • I thought that was confirmed as the working title for the Bear and the Bow?
  • pixfan
Let's not forget about the two previously announced original Pixar features we get to look forward to: Newt and the Bear and the Bow.

I expect Pixar to continue making original features, even if the movie business today demands "SEQUEL!!!" Maybe the settle into a one-for-me, one-for-you pattern...
  • BigJ
I don't know why everyone is opposed to Pixar doing sequels. There are very few sequels in the history of Hollywood that are as good or surpass the first's efforts Godfather II, the Empire Strikes Back, and Toy Story 2...I'd argue they have a good track record thus far, and the news coming out about TS3 makes it sound as though it will be amazing as well. They bumped Cars 2 up by a year because they believed in the story that much. Just saying...that much confidence from the people that have yet to deliver a bad film says something. They get story, and they still have 2 original films in the pipeline in the next three years. It'll have been 12 years since the last toy story, and by 2013, 12 years since the last MI. I don't see it as a cash-in, but rather taking good opportunities to revisit familiar characters that we love in a way that only Pixar can.
  • LJB
I personally loved Monsters Inc., it's one of my favorite Pixar films. I agree with Sergemeister: I highly doubt they're going to cut corners just because it's a sequel. Pixar isn't like Disney, where they make a good animated movie and then ruin it by churning out dozens of direct-to-video "cheapquels" (I'm looking at you, "Tarzan&Jane"). Pixar has an excellent reputation, and they won't want to spoil it by making a bunch of flimsy sequels like the rest of the animation industry. I'm looking forward to Monsters, Inc. 2, as well as Toy Story 3 and maybe even Cars 2; something tells me they're going to improve on the original Cars.

I was just watching Monsters, Inc this past week, and wondering why it belonged to Pixar's no sequel club ... and guess what's in the works now? Dedicated Disney blogger Jim Hill visited this year's Licensing International Expo, and talked to the fine people who were representing Disney and Pixar, and buying up licensing rights.masini de inchiriat
