Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Michael Bay has posted a new update on his official forum, confirming what I’ve heard from a variety of sources — Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen isn’t finished, even though the movie is set to premiere tonight in Tokyo, Japan. I’ve heard that the crew has been working around the clock, 7-days a week, to finish the movie and Bay says that the film is “almost finished.”

He also tells moviegoers to see the film on the big 50 foot tall IMAX screens, as the computer animated effects have been rendered at 4K for the 70mm projection. The IMAX version of the film is “slightly longer” with “more robot fighting” and the previously advertised, four scenes, that were shot using IMAX cameras, that “will fill the fill IMAX screen.” Oh, and did we mention the film features 42 robots in all? Read the full update below.

Hey everyone,

In Japan today. After a month and half seven days a week most days going till midnight me and my crew have just about finished Transformers. I have never seen such a level of dedication from every crew member in a movie before.

Even today after the press in Japan and right before the premiere tonight, I have to sneak out to a digital house to approve the last few effect shots.

It has been a long hard road, but really fun one to travel. What you will notice that is strikingly different than Transformers 1, is the level of animation detail. The robot characters (42 in all), you really can feel empathy for them. What is also very different is the sheer scale of the movie. We have been very tight holding back much of the best imagery in commercials and trailers.

The way to see this movie is on IMAX. Never before has there been 4k rendered character animation shot on full IMAX 70 mm film. This is a first and the results are stunning. You will see Optimus Prime in a few shots where he is actually perfectly to scale on the IMAX 50 foot tall screens.

For IMAX, I created a slightly longer cut with more robot fighting. Four scenes were shot on IMAX cameras so the screen will fill the full IMAX screen for these scenes.

Haters beware.

Michael

  • i they do what they did with the dark knight blu ray and have the IMAX scenes on the disc as part of the film
  • i hope they do what they did with the dark knight blu ray and have the IMAX scenes on the disc as part of the film
  • PResto117
of course they will, they're part of the movie lol.
  • Jake
Sweet! I already have my IMAX tickets for the local 12:01 showing.
  • Yeah, I hope so too cause those scenes in TDK on Blu-Ray looked great. There was no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't see this on IMAX and knowing its just slightly longer and more robot fighting action, is all I need to know.
  • Ohhhh this explains why the running time from my theater's website says its 2 hours and 31 minutes. This is awesome and kind of odd first time that it's done. However, general audiences will probably not know about this if they don't make some kind of announcement on TV?
  • Awesome IMAX and Transformers and Michael Bay it is like three elements combining to create the perfect entity
  • Ok, out of curiosity, will it be showing the longer version on -all- IMAX screens? Including the crappy ones that aren't really IMAX? The closest real IMAX screen to me is about an hour away but there is one at an AMC by me about 5 minutes away. Too bad he didn't say how much longer the scenes are. Probably better off seeing it on a normal screen at the MJR 5 minutes in the other direction for $4 on Saturday morning.
  • yeah, i just need to find a REAL Imax theater around here (Cincinnati). i'm pretty sure the local AMC is just one of those screens that are a little bigger for an inflated price.

other than that, color me excited.
  • Tyler
YES Mr. Bay, please put the IMAX scenes full frame on the Blu-ray. Just don't use the IMAX print for the regular film like on Dark Knight please.
  • Love the haters beware at the end there. Hopefully the film delivers what it promises.
  • It will be four robot fighting scenes off screen while Bay focuses in on Shia and a giant ice cube.
  • /ambient
It's too bad Bay doesn't have a great track record of hiring talented screenwriters.

his cinematography is amazing! I love his use of fast moving cameras. Now, if we could convince Bay that story makes the movie.
  • cat
nothing he can do about the script. these guys wrote star trek too so how can you blame him.
  • He's a producer on the film. His blog posts also state that Bay contributed a great deal in the writing of this film. So, if the story sucks, he's as much to blame as the screenwriters.
  • cat
great news right before the release. i love this shit.
  • Alex
The movie looked stunning in the imax previews, at least the cinematography and effects. I expect it to be big and dumb but at least it'll be nice to look at.
  • There's a 50foot IMAX literally less than a 1 minute drive from my house (if I make the traffic signal), so this is pretty sweet, totally going to go. Hooray for giant robots!
  • Thats the only way I intend to watch this movie. Buying my tickets tomorrow, getting really excited to see Soundwave.
  • cat
why do you think were seeing soundwave? i have my doubts.
  • Because its been confirmed by the writers, toy images, story leaks, the novel. Just a quick google search would have let you know he's in ROTF.
  • Because its been confirmed by the writers, toys for ROTF, and the novel. Here's a link to the toy. Just a quick google search would have let you know he's in ROTF.

For those of you in the tri-state area, the "IMAX" at Times Sq. AMC is not the real version of IMAX. The only one in the area that I know of is Lincoln Sq. That is an amazing theater all around.

I don't know of the one in New Roc City so I can't speak to that one.
  • How the hell am I supposed to boycott anything when they pull things like this?!? You win this time IMAX... : (
  • Ed G
    LOL!
  • I went to a Transfomers 1 in IMAX special screening back in late April and Michael Bay came to talk to the crowd. He said that he was just finishing filming a some inserts and the crowd was like "ooohhh" cuz that's usually not a good sign when this late in the game BUT i have faith in Bay and im sure he'll deliver a kick ass movie! buying my IMAX tix tmmrw! the REAL IMAX theater...
  • Well, that's just retarded.

I really don't want to have to drive the extra distance, to pay twice as much, to see the entire movie.
  • Ant
Here in the UK we got an email saying tickets were only available for 26th onwards because the film was still being worked on and they didn't think the Imax print would be delivered on time.
  • UK gets the shaft again... I feel for you guys, I had friends helping me through the Dark Knight viral and UK got shafted there too.
  • Adhipa
No IMAX in new zealand :(
  • dogless
    @Alec

You have faith in Bay? Obviously you're not a fan of movies, plot or dialogue. I will be avoiding this shit like the plague.
  • I didn't know you could be a "fan" of movies.

I know you can be a fan of a sports team, an actor, a director, a certain film but movies in general? Wouldn't this mean that Alec, in essence, IS a "fan" of movies because he's going to see it regardless of what's on screen just because it was labeled a "movie"? I thought fans attend, watch, listen, buy and advertise anything that they are a "fan" of. I think if you study your dickless comment for a bit you'll find that you sir are not a "fan" of movies.
  • dogless
Nice straw man argument, idiot. I write a comment criticizing Bay and you jump on one word? How about you dispute the fact that I think Bay is a terrible director, who has made a name for himself by pumping out crap for idiots with poor taste and low expectations. Or do you want to find an erroneous word and pick it apart in an effort to feel better about yourself?
  • Well thats great, we dont have imax in denmark :( Lets hope the imax version will be released on bluray
  • Longer -- you're kidding me, right?!? Even though it's more action, it's still a bit troubling since Transformers 2 is longer than the first, oh which 40% of it was mostly boring filler.
  • Great, if only there was an Imax screen near me.
  • Grabbed my ticket to the 12:01 last week. Easily worth it to drive 20 min to the real IMAX theater nearby instead of the cheap one 5 min away. This is great news!
  • Rodney
Tickets just went on sale at the Great Clips IMAX theate at the Minnesota ZOO. Largest screen in Minnesota. 15 minutes from my house!
  • IMAXfan
If you want to know the size of the screens in the IMAX theaters near you, go here: http://www.lfexaminer.com/ImaxMapUS.htm.

In general, the IMAX digital and MPX theaters (red and yellow markers) have smaller screens than the GT and SR theaters (blue and green). The digital IMAXes average 31x54 feet, while the GTs average 60x80 feet, almost three times larger.
