New York Post blogger Reed Tucker has been speaking to producer Todd Black. Their chat was ostensibly about Tony Scott’s The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 rehash though Tucker valiantly swung in with a few Spider-Man 4 questions too. Black gamely discussed the involvement of Kirsten Dunst, the villain they have in mind for the movie (what? only one?), and the rumoured wedding between Peter Parker and MJ. But what did he reveal? It’s all coming up, right after this break…

The most solid revelation is that Tucker learned how Kirsten Dunst is “definitely on board”. This is hardly a shocker, despite Sam Raimi recently stoking up suspicions and doubts around the actress’ involvement. Doesn’t sound like she’ll be donning a frilly meringue and veil, though - Black denied any knowledge of the rumoured marriage subplot.

Black also swatted off stories of Morbius being locked in place as the picture’s villain. Let’s just assume we can believe this claim - though, really, official word is never any more reliable the unofficial - and accept that The Living Vampire is well and truly out of the frame. This starts to make Sam Raimi look like the least acceptable source on what is, indeed, his own film. What do you think of Raimi’s pot-stirring? Does it just make for jolly japes, is it a good way to garner publicity, or will you get tired of being steered up dead ends, time after time?

What Black did say regarding the proposed antagonist is really just another flame-fanning clue. Here’s the quote:

We’re just coming up with who the villain’s going to be now. We’ll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it’ll be a big part of New York.

Tucker guessed this might refer to Kraven the Hunter or The Kingpin, while simultaneously offering reasons for it to be neither. With Kraven, of course, his only connection to New York is his wild incongruity in the city. With The Kingpin, there’s a possible rights issue. The character previously appeared in the Daredevil films, suggesting he’s off bounds for this Sony production.

Personally, I think The Lizard foots the bill best of all - alligators in the sewer and all that. That he’s also compatible with Morbius is quite compelling too - because no matter what Black said, I don’t know that I believe him. Raimi really was giving us some strong Morbius indicators, and Black’s seeming suggestion that the film will only feature a single villain doesn’t quite ring true with me.

All speculation, hearsay and conjecture. Rumours, rumours, rumours. But fun ones, and good to kick around a while, until the big announcements break - right?

  • I want the Vulture.

I'm not asking for him to be the main villain... but it would be fantastic to see the opening of Spider-man 4 be Spidey chasing Vulture around the city and apprehending him for the police. And I'm not talking young guy vulture in a sweet suit - I'm talking about dirty old man vulture.
  • addition 101
its molten man, he was born in nyc
  • Will
    Carnage
  • I love the whole Venom/Carnage/Symbiote story line, but do you really want to see it again after what happened with Spider-Man 3?
  • gah
so the villian is Rudolph Giuliani? Donald Trump? seriously this statement makes no sense. aren't all Spidey villians New York centric? Kraven is from Russia by the way.
  • Maybe it's Woody Allen or Nora Ephron.
  • jason B
ha! or how a bout george steinbrenner?
  • Krycek7o2
But, we will only see the back of him though...
  • Shawn
Kraven the Hunter or Mysterio would be awesome, but somewhere in this film I hope they finally open Dr. Connor's character to become The Lizardman.
  • Bruce Campbell = Mysterio. Please!
  • jason B
i really really hope its the lizard. the casting they already have with dylan baker is too good! with the recent release of DMTH, i can only imagine what raimi would do with those creepy sewer scenes. i don't mind a morbius tie-in, but lets just get the parker vs conners tale on already - it'll be as good as part 2 if raimi is allowed to do it his way.
  • So many good spidey villains its hard to pick just one. I would personally like to see Mysterio, Carnage, and The Lizard are just a couple that I would really like to see. I thought The Lizard was going to be a villain by now but perhaps this time around.
  • CEKMA
Terry o'quinn aka john Locke for vulture!!!
  • John
I would also like to see a villain to appear in the beginning of the movie. and spider man id fighting him and that all you see of him. like rhino or scorpion.
  • Villain apprenhension in the beginning ala The Dark Knight capturing the Scarecrow, would be a fun idea.
  • I'm all for Kingpin. Always loved him in the comics. Though... I really would like to see Michael Clark Duncan take on the role again. As bad as that movie was... he was that good as Kingpin, despite making the character turn from white to black for the film. I doubt they'll bring him back though. =\\

i would most like to see The Lizard in SM4

also, was Mysterio a cool villain in the comics, tv series, etc.? because i have only seen him in the Spiderman 2 video game and he was kinda gay...
  • Hell no
  • I second that! Too bad that Mysterio would be considered a "Los Angeles" villain due to Quentin Beck's back story.

Personally, I'm putting my chips on The Lizard and either Shocker or Electro. Kingpin doesn't make sense at all not only because of the rights issue, but because it would just be boring. Because of his size, Kingpin is a background character at most and doesn't really work for a feature film (i.e. Daredevil). I've always argued that Electro, Shocker, and Mysterio would make for great cinema because of the pure visual element in their powers and interesting back stories. Shocker could be easily grounded in the real world (small time crook/inventor creates sonic gauntlets) as could Electro (hell, a guy in real life as the power to generate electricity *liveleak . c o m/view?i=4d1e072835*)

Looking forward to Raimi making up for SM3
  • eric
i personally think carnage would be an awesome villain but i think if they used him they would have to make the film rated R to give the character justice. Even though sam raimi got away with his Drag me to Hell project only being rated PG-13. But the LIzard would be a cool villain and so would mysterio. Morbius would be cool as long as they didn't make him a pussy like they did the sand man in spider man three. Actually as long as they stay away from everything they did in spider man 3 i could be a good movie.

the spidey villan is mr met?
ooh- maybe the villan is the WORLD CHAMPION PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES?
is there a marvel villan called the rat? or ratman? sewer rat?

  • dagreenman18
Now if they can only get rid of Tobey McGuire...
  • wha?
nonononono leave toby alone. noone else is parker.
  • dagreenman18
Topher Grace would have been a perfect Peter Parker. But noooooo, they just HAD to fuck that up and make him venom.
  • Toby is awesome as Spidey, are you kidding me. Topher? Really?
  • Muu
    I agree with you Wha
  • nelson
yes lets replace the star of the film 4 films later brilliant idea LMAO

anyway they should do lizard guy has only been in all 3 films some sewer battle scenes would be sweet
  • Tom
Truthfully, I have a hard time being excited about a fourth Spider-Man movie at all. He's always been one of my favorites, but Spider-Man 3 was just too bad for me to care about what's next. It's not that I don't have faith in Raimi, but the mythology just got so..screwed up (the big complaint being Harry's death). If we could just declare a mulligan and redo this movie as Spider-Man 3, I'd be thrilled.
  • Themovies!!
I do hope it ends up being lizard and kraven that would be a nice combo lizard we have had hints of that fron connors in 2 and 3 and would need little time to get lizard story moving. As for kraven he is a simple villain and could be a nice foil for spidey while he is trying to stop the lizard and help connors return to human form.
  • Palmer
Mysterio? Black Cat (not really a villain)? Maybe the Hobgobling?
  • josh p
hoby! and he could tweak it a little and make it harry and bring him back
  • It's simple, during the wedding let peter's college teacher turn into the lizard and he kills mj. The rest of the movie spidey and the lizard just beat the shit out of each other. Peter kills the lizard, then retires cause he took a life. 10 years later The Web-Slinger Returns!
  • The Lizard could be the main guy(New York centric), he teaches at NYU. Really they're wasting Dylan Baker's time if he never gets to actually play the part.
  • Lizard true believers!!! at least i hope
  • superozy
WOW heres a good idea, have both Kraven and The lizard, kraven hunts the lizard! tada what u guys think?
  • wha?
that's not a bad idea . not bad at all. but how to fit in mysterio?
  • Wow, where do you think of these things?
  • the lizard and kraven. c'mon we don't need anyone else.
  • The villian will be Clone Emo Peter Parker. "The greatest enemy is himself". And it will hopefully not suck.
  • fisticufflinks
PLEASE, GOD, Let it be KINGPIN! I want the rights to go to the right people and DO KINGPIN THE JUSTICE he DESERVES!

    Best Baddy EVER!
  • ... and he'll be played by Larry David.
  • Not to nitpick, but he teaches at Columbia.

    Damn I just nitpicked.
  • In the comics he teaches at Empire State University.

    Damn, now I nitpicked.
  • He fights the Cloverfield monster, Statue of Liberty and worst of all, cold feet.
  • r.me.
"Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick [as the villain], because it’ll be a big part of New York."

    ...Mr. Met?
  • edc2
    a sentient 42nd street?
  • Chasegrebb
    Kraven's Last Hunt!
  • ELEKTRO!
  • Kyle
have a bunch of mulitple villians in this one. not the lot of 'em main, but as side villians.

side villians: scorpion, mysterio, and electro

    main villians: lizard and kraven

the side villians would be beaten during the film, while lizard is beaten in the middle with the hunter still in search of it. after finding out, kraven has a desire to kill the bug. so he thinks he had. having kraven take over for awhile, and mr. jameson saying his statement about it are true. izard returns to kill the bug, only to find that it is the hunter. peter comes back alive to save his teacher, and to defeat the hunter for the last time.
