James Cameron Joins Heavy Metal

james cameron heavy metal
Last we heard, Kevin Eastman’s new big screen Heavy Metal movie had a list of impressive directors a mile long: Zack Snyder, David Fincher, Mark Osborne (Kung Fu Panda), and Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy). Eastman has said that three more directors would also direct segments on the animated anthology film. Since that time we’ve learned that Rob Zombie (Halloween) is in talks to join the mix.

But now our good friends at Film School Rejects have learned directly from Eastman that James Cameron has now come on board as Co-Executive producer, and will direct a segment. Cameron’s involvement is also notable because it pretty much guarantees that the film will be 3D. It was also revealed that Jack Black would be part of Kung Fu Panda helmer Mark Osborne’s comedy segment, although it was elaborated on if he would provide a voice, write, or even co-direct. Eastman says that the three other directors (one of which we assume is the previously mentioned Zombie), who have agreed but haven’t officially signed on, “are equally as jaw-dropping.” I do remember that Guillermo Del Toro’s name was initially on the list, but the filmmaker became too busy.

Discuss: Who else would you like to see involved in a new Heavy Metal movie?

  • This has greatness written all over it.
  • sultanofslack
Well, it could have, if for 1 it wasn't going to be CG, and 2 if Kevin Eastman had nothing to do with it. Eastman did nothing but bring down the amazing magazine when he purchased it in 1995. The magazine was at it's pinnacle in the late 70's and early 80's. Just look at how awful Eastmans Heavy Metal 2000 was. He has no clue at all how to do good adult fantasy/sci fi.
  • Vincenzo Natali, that's who.
  • gah
is the comments section acting up for anyone else? sometimes is appears in the classic form, and other times it shows up looking like word ballons where you can't reply to peoples comments or thumb up/down them.
  • weird... I haven't seen this or been contacted about this problem...
  • I've been having problems with comments for a few days now... I saw that one last night. Before that, I've been having to remove the #idc-container in the URL bar and refresh to post a comment.
  • dagreenman18
Happens to me too. I open multiple stories in different tabs, and sometimes one article will have the normal comment section, while the other has the weird word bubble thing.
  • bobby s
yeah the comments was kinda f'd up
  • Seems fine now. Intense Debate might have been down for a short period of time.
  • my head just exploded after reading this........and yes comments are acting weird
  • nelson
yes comments are acting weird the article sometimes disappears lol
  • Weyland_Yutani
this is what is happening here as well - disappearing articles
  • If this is really official it the greatest news I've heard coming from hellywood in a long time.
  • Lawdog
Wow. That's a lot of impressive names. I just don't know if a remake is a good idea. This is going to be a cgi Heavy Metal? Will the original vignettes be the recreated, or will it be all new destinations for the orb? And what about the soundtrack? That was a major part of the greatness of the original. Will it be a completely new soundtrack, or will it be done as a cover album of the original. There are so many pitfalls to remaking Heavy Metal, and it doesn't even matter how they answer all the questions that will come up in the process. No matter what they do here, they'll be walking a fine line between awesomeness and disaster...and that's an awful lot of people walking a very fine line. Besides, South Park already did a remake.
  • Interest = Greatly raised.
  • jason B
i think for me, 'jaw-dropping' would be like terrence malick, or mel brooks, or someone else we dont see alot from. cronenberg would be insane.
  • Damn! This is pretty cool! I hope this works out...
  • Holy shit. What an amazing cast of directors.
  • DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT
  • Captain Thunderball
I assume that Rob Zombie will direct the horror part, but I'm sure we all agree that Sam Raimi would have been the better choice.

David Gordon Green, Guillermo Del Toro (I think he's already involved), and Katheryn Bigelow would be some odd choices but some I think would ultimately work.
  • happened to me as well. classic but sometimes balloon form.
with mobile phones no button to switch to mobile mode or get email replies to comments.
  • dude... this is the list of who's who of badass directors with style
This is gonna be really good
  • cameron can make anything great i think.
  • bring in Ridley :)
  • Oooh, I like that idea. Would not mind seeing Mamoru Oshii as well.
  • Anthony S.
The current list has a lack of actual animators. My choices:
    Brad Bird
    Peter Chung
    Hayao Miyazaki
    Satoshi Kon
    Katsuhiro Otomo
  • Weyland_Yutani
Ha - you must have beat me to this post by a few minutes. Just what I am thinking.

I guess, if Blur is doing the animation, the nuts and bolts "directors" will be the Blur guys in charge of the work. Although some of these big name directors have a good grasp of the medium, I'm heavily biased to believe that animation is best served by those that best understand the nuances involved. We'll see.

I'm curious if individual sequences will carry individual interpretations of the look of the animation. I'm guessing that they aren't taking that sort of Fantasia/Animatrix approach on this, but it would definitely get me more excited for the project.
  • Brad Bird would never do something like this. But I'd easily put Production IG and Mad House on that list of animation studios I would love to see on this. Even guys like Bruce Timm, Chris Cunningham (I'd lose my head if he was part of this) and Chris Sanders would be great on a project like Heavy Metal.
  • Weyland_Yutani
yeah, totally agree that Bird wouldn't do it, but if they were looking for jaw-dropping names, that would certainly fit the bill.

I like your suggestions. Bruce Timm would be a great person to help with this, and I think Sanders might fit the bill better than Dindal. Of course, that is only one side of the tip of an iceberg that contains a wealth of unused animation talent. I'm sure there are a few of the "masters" that could bring amazing things to an animated project. Using different animation studios would be a great way to see different styles. I wish these different directors take that approach.
  • Weyland_Yutani
    Directors for an animated film?
Brad Bird, Mahero Maeda, Shane Acker, Henry Selick, James Baxter, Mark Dindal

Yeah, that would be jaw dropping, but I don't see it happening.
  • Johan
    Ridley Scott
    Sam Raimi
    Peter Jackson
  • Dman 23
    Yea PJ would be awesome
  • The_Kid
I think Darren Aronafsky would be an interesting name to add to this list. Is this gonna be a remake or just a third film with no stories and a new soundtrack because that would be awesome.
  • So wait does this mean that a Heavy Metal movie might actually be...good? Okay the first Heavy Metal is fun in its own way, and the second one is just plain awful, but this list of directors...it might actually be good.
  • dagreenman18
Rami, now that he has his sanity back, Gondry, just to see the insane stuff he can come up with, and Alex proyas, cause i was watching Dark City the other night.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Does anyone know if this film still has Neal Asher and Joe Haldeman writing sequences? Neal Asher writes amazing action sequences, filled with all of the guts, heroes, and beasties you could hope for in a Heavy Metal film. If these guys are still involved, the chances of this being good are even better.
  • I know he's already pulled this with The Twilight Zone Movie, but I'd like to see Joe Dante do something genre-centric again.
  • bb6640
This has suddenly shot to my Must See list given the talent involved. Cannot wait!
  • Another great addition. I think has the potential to be pretty damn good.
  • Switters
I second the call for Brad Bird. I'd love to see him try PG-13+. Also, Takashi Miike or Chan-wook Park for some asian influence would be fun. As others have said the soundtrack is gonna be the most important part. If it sucks, it does matter how pretty the pictures are.
  • Candy Castle
This is really the bomb!!! I have been waiting for this project so long, Cameron is what it takes to get this project off the ground. Who else would I like to see:

    Darren Aronofsky
    Quentin Tarantino
  • Marek
This is great news because the comic had great potential but the original film is seriously lame, I simply is. The Aeon Flux cartoon series is way way better. With this talent this could be incredibly entertaining. Amazing
  • On what planet is Rob Zombie an "impressive director"? He's made a few gory shlock movies and that's about it.
  • ick
    David Lynch might be cool
  • ick
    or Terry Gilliam
  • Neumann
Druuna. But that's not going to happen, for pretty good reason. Having said that, if they can slip it in there in some capacity, I won't complain. Unless it's done really badly (and really, good luck casting her)

So I'm gonna say that they should look to the 80s and early eras of the magazine and take a page from what really works: trippy sci-fi with big ideas, some funny funny stuff, not just sex and titillation but some actually cool, funky looking european style adventures that we couldn't see anywhere else.

Whoever said Vincenzo Natali, I totally agree, as with Guellermo Del Toro, who I think embodies that Heavy Metal style more than any other name I've heard listed.

There used to be these shorter, funny stories in black and white that would make a great basis for black and white interstitials.

My biggest want is that if Cameron does a 3D segment, that it should be a Moebius segment (actually, I don't care who directs that segment, it would look amazing in 3D). How could you do a Heavy Metal movie and not do Moebius? It would be an interesting challenge to find a way to design and shoot a movie that looks like his drawings.
  • Neumann
Yes, I realize that Druuna is a character, not a director, I misread "who" as "what," and realized this five minutes later in the car to work. Sorry.
  • Dman 23
I think Robert Rodriguez should do one
  • Dserdena
is this going to be a mixture of live action; 3D-Animation; 3-D Cinematography?

---Hooray! -more glorified screensavers from the long rich and decades stale -and corrupt ---James Cameron!

--What? -you haven't heard? -Cameron's receiving massive financing and
market favors from the most awesomly genocidal regime in world history
    ---across the Pacific.

    -That's right!

It's his job to keep the circle-jerks in the comfort-zone guzzling his cyber
wampum lest they develop any consciousness about those 'missing'
    70 million people.

Think I'm exaggerating? Well, a little while back it was the 50th anniversary
of the Korean War ---a conflict that's still going on -thanks largely to the
regime mentioned earlier. Now -tell me -did you see a single picture about Korea? ---anything at all?

    ----right. NOW you get it.

Cameron is a traitor not only to whatever 'art' he really had -but to history
    and humanity generally.

    ----ENJOY THE SHOW!
