Dang! The Hangover is making bank!

The Hangover is the funniest film I've seen since Wedding Crashers (2005). Wow. Destroyed my expectations. Worth the $10. Zach Galifinakis (?) is a born star.
  • Wasn't Zach's last film Outcold? hahaha
  • He makes his money on tv and doing stand up. His last movie that was any thing was into the wild. He was on tim and eric show a few times.
  • Joe
Maybe we can get Will stronger roles on the level of Stranger Than Fiction now that "Will Ferrell As A Buffoon" movies are no longer box office gold.

I was expecting Up to be an easy #1, but Hangover with 17 million? Wow! Of course, as an R-rated comedy, it'll drop off a lot over the weekend, but that's incredibly surprising. Both deserve good grosses, and Warner Bros. might be able to shake off the Terminator Salvation low gross; Hangover must have cost, at most, 30 million dollars.

    Poor Drag Me to Hell
  • One of the funniest movies I have seen in Years. I had a headache from Laughing so hard.
  • My face hurt from laughing so hard i had a huge smile on my face too.

What killed Land of the Lost was Farrell's knack for interjecting his trademark look at me I'm naked/toilet/lets get gay humor into the script.

Since the film is based on a wholesome family tv show it stands out as crass and rude. Farrell's a big asshle for shitting all over the Land of the Lost...

    Real glad its bombing!!!
  • This is great news for Zach Galifianakis, but Land of the Lost is truly amazing. Don't be fooled by the T.Rex-centric marketing, the film is far and beyond SFX fellatio. It's one of the most satisfyingly strange comedies I've seen in years. At times, I could not believe it was rated PG-13.
  • Completely agree, Hunter. There were some missed jokes, but the ones that hit hit really damn hard. Danny McBride is brilliant, and the effects didn't distract from the comedy, which was something I worried about before I saw it.

It definitely left me satisfied and smiling.
  • I wanna know where the "What Did You Think: The Hangover" post is!!
Cause i thought that movie was nuts!
I don't understand how Kevin Smith had trouble with Zack and Miri's Rating with the Hangover being how it was!!
  • Kevin smith already had a bulls eye on his head. Plus they took the cut he wanted it he took a really hard R cut first so he could have some wiggle room.
  • Kevin Smith had trouble with Zack and Miri because they chose to release it on Holloween which is traditionally a bad movie weekend for non horror films. It would have done much better with a February release.
  • Kevin Smith had trouble because he said the word Porno. Oh crap, I said Porno!

This comment is rated R for language and probably sexuality.
  • Am I the only one who was disappointed by The Hangover? I didn't think it was bad or anything I was just expecting to laugh a lot more. I liked Observe and Report a lot more and laughed more during it. I did have a bad day and then went to the midnight show so that might have had something to do with me not finding it that funny. I wish they would have given Ed Helms a lot more to do but everyone is right, Zach Galifianakis steals the movie and is awesome. A new comedy star is born. But man most people were predicting 20-25 million over the weekend for Hangover but who would have thought it would crush Will Ferrell?

Totally agree! It was a good comedy but nowhere near Wedding Crashers level of funny.... pacing of the movie was really off. Chuckle>series of events>chuckle>repeat
    Not bad but not great
  • I loved The Hangover, thought it was the funniest movie of the year so far.... but Observe And Report was definitely the better movie, but not necessarily as funny.

If you want to see more Zach Galifianakis humor, I suggest watching his periodic online interview show, Between Two Ferns. He is the best talk show host ever.
  • I am not sure who the Land of the Lost is tarketing. Kids were too young to watch the old show and they are clearly not tarketing anyone over 25 so....
  • Idiots who think Will Ferrel is funny.
  • The one good thing about LOTL bombing is that it almost guarantees we will see Anchorman 2 next summer.
  • One can only hope this is the end of the Will Ferrel era

Happy for Hangover, a great and hilarious movie. Also happy for Up remaining strong, another superb movie. Up will stay no.1 since family films make most of their buck on Sat and Sun, especially with the matinees with kids and stuff. Nevertheless, filmmakers of both films should be proud that their respective products are being well received-and deservedly so. Quality seems to be winning out so far this summer. Trek and Up are displaying remarkable longevity, and I'm confident Hangover will do the same. The other blockbusters have opened relatively well but for the most part have sunk in the ensuing weeks.
  • That's too bad. I wanted Land of the Lost to do well. I'm still seeing it on sunday.

I am surprised people are surprised Land of the Lost has tanked: No one I know knew about it, and those that did were confused: Was it a kids movie? A Will Farrell film? Wasn't it based on a cheesy 60s tv show? Nobody knew, or apparently cared. Hangover has been getting crazy buzz since it started previewing and the trailers looked very funny. And Up is Pixar: nuff said.

How did Land of the Lost cost that much money to make???? I mean, signing on Will Ferrel probably cost a few mill... but the cgi is COMPLETE shit (I thought that was on purpose to make the film more surreal and as a throwback to how crappy the stop-motion stuff was in the old show).
  • Justin
land of the lost looked terrible. Not quite a kids movie, not quite a will ferrell movie. I watched the "first look" on HBO and I kind of felt bad for the producers who worked on the original show, they were so old and oblivious.

With no bias one way or the other on Land of the Lost, I do hope maybe this will help send a message to stop turning TV shows into movies, especially ones that weren't comedies to begin with into comedic films.
  • Infrafan
Yeah, -1 because, Alvin and The Chipmunks, The Avengers, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched, Car 54, Where Are You?, Charlie's Angels 1 & 2, Dudely Do-Right, The Dukes of Hazard, Fat Albert, The Honeymooners, Inspector Gadget, I-Spy, Josie and The Pussycats, Leave It to Beaver, The Mod Squad, and nearly all those SNL movies are some of the greatest works of cinema ever made.

Up will definitely win the weekend. As for Land of the Lost, I'm not surprised at all I thought the box-office prediction sights that were saying 30-mil+ were crazy. Even if it's a decent film which seems somewhat questionable, if you're going out with adult friends you're going to see the Hangover and if your taking kids to the theater you're going to see Up.
  • Jess
I agree. Up had the family and young kids cornered, while The Hangover had the adults, late teens, and college crowd cornered. It also didn't help that the ads weren't funny, and that the movie was bad from both critical feedback and even the few unfortunate people I know that saw it last night.
  • The Hangover was hilarious, really lived up to all the hype, I suggest you all check it out. Zach Galifanakis steals the show, love that guy. Land of the Lost was okay, nothing really special though. I have to say Danny McBride was pretty funny in it.
  • Considering the massive numbers you posted on Land of the Lost ('s budget) and that poor weekend take, throw in marketing costs, and that's a hell of a lot of DVD sales to make up. I feel the studio's pain.
  • Yeah, Land of the Lost was a bit of a shock for me, with Ferrell and the weird comedic tone to it. Like a National Lampoon movie with dinosaurs, which is an awful idea. It tanked because it was a bad concept.
  • Wow, I have to say I'm surprised. Everyone in my theater laughed their heads off with the trailer. I thought I might be the only non idiot who realized crap from comedy.

    Belonging feels good. :D

I think Drag Me To Hell was released at the wrong time. I'm sure it'll find an audience on DVD/Blu-Ray. It's a real fun movie, but when Hollywood is bogged down by really bad horror flicks released year round, suddenly a good one comes out and doesn't get the credit it deserves. The poster kind of sucks. The only thing that got me into the theatre was the critical praise.

Well, you would expect Raimi of all people to have the balls to pull a rated R film out of his hat too. Maybe horror fans are sick of PG-13 crap. They low ball the ratings to open the films up to bigger audiences and instead miss their core fan base. Then they turn around and cry about how films like these and Terminator don't pull in the kinds of numbers they were after.

The Hangover was amazing! Land of the Lost definitely didn't take in the college crowd or young adults as well as The Hangover. I don't know what else to say, with Up and The Hangover, how did LotL expect to make any money on Friday. It'll pick up today when people see "the other comedy" that came out this weekend.
  • My kids went to see Land of the Lost last night....Especially my daughter was really lost. She said that except for a couple of laughts, it was pretty pointless
  • Sheriff Dewey
All this LOTL hate is really misguided. That movie was funny as ballz. Big deal - two comedies out on one weekend and that means you can only choose one or the other? That is friggin' stupid! Go see both - like I will. I'm telling you, LOTL - very funny. Can't wait to see Hangover tomorrow.
  • Pete (original)
you are dead wrong. just got back from Land of the Lost and the movie is not good at all. It picks up a little after halfway through but there was nothing too funny about it to have to defend it. Go see The Hangover and change your mind.
  • If you haven't, go see The Hangover. Fat Jesus FTW!
  • Jambo
Land of Lost was not entertaining. Will F plays the same role over and over. It's pretty much played out and nobody cares anymore. As for dinosaurs, we've see enough CG dinos since Jurassic Park, and on TV. Turn on the TV and there's a CG T Rex doing his thing. It's old news.

With seen a thousand times dino CG, unfunny gags, and Will F playing the same role (again) in each movie. It's not a surprise that the movie bombed.
