According to multiple news sources, actor David Carradine has been found dead in a hotel room in Bangkok. Carradine’s personal manager says the death is being investigated, but provided no other details. Carradine was apparently in the process of filming his latest film, Stretch. This article from the BBC purports to have more details regarding the circumstances of his death.

INDEPENDENT FILM "PORTLAND" MOURNS LOSS OF DAVID CARRADINE

Actor David Carradine was set to co-star in the feature film entitled PORTLAND shooting in Los Angeles, CA and Portland, OR this summer.

Los Angeles, CA, June 4, 2009 - The cast, crew, and producing team behind the feature film Portland are shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic passing of co-star David Carradine on the eve of principal photography.

Portland was set to be David's next film and was his only project currently in pre-production. Helmed by Matthew Mishory, the picture stars Erin Daniels, Jonathan Caouette, Steven Martini, Renee Victor, and Alex Schemmer. Carradine was set to play a pivotal role in the film and this has been a great loss for the entire PORTLAND family. "An actor of David Carradine's stature behind our film meant the world to us," said executive producers Adrian Salpeter and Elizabeth Levine of Random Bench Productions. "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time".

The team is committed to this film and are considering other actors to replace the irreplaceable David Carradine. The producers and all involved are moving forward with the production in his memory.

Mr. Carradine was truly a living legend of stage and screen, having worked with Martin Scorsese, Hal Ashby, Ingmar Bergman, and Quentin Tarantino, among many others, in a career that spanned nearly five decades.

Writer/director Matthew Mishory adds, "every filmmaker aspires to work with an iconic actor like David Carradine, he was one of a kind".
  • this is just ridiculously depressing. this just goes to show how much a double edged sword of fame and acting can be. R.I.P. to one of the coolest mother fuckers to ever grace the silver screen. will be greatly missed. this is everyone's loss.
  • I can't believe he hung himself. Another great actor is now gone. R.I.P
  • What could possibly be so awful in his life that'd he hang himself?

    RIP though..
  • Whatever reasons there may be, would they ever be good enough for the general public? Why do so many people hang themselves or worse? One of my closest friends and former teacher did the same recently. I could only ask why angrily but if he felt that was the only answer then so be it.

David Carradine was such a cool guy. His voice alone was a character in itself. After I saw Crank 2 I was thinking to myself, I'm glad he's getting into more and more films and I hope it keeps up. But maybe that return to fame wasn't what he was after. See you around David.
  • Well that's my point. He seems like an awesome guy, has a successful career, a family, a following and then he just hangs himself?

I don't know, maybe it's just me but I cant seem to share sympathy for people who end their lives. It's sad yes, but even more sad that they couldn't handle it and had to go out like that.
  • Sorry Bill
Carradine was found naked with a cord around his neck and penis, most likely having accidentally hung himself during autoerotic asphyxiation.
  • Tom
Actor David had died. We missed him.
  • You know what? I honestly am kinda in denial about this one, I can truly say that though as an actor he was kinda under the radar, he was definitely a huge huge star to me... I wanted him to be my master and teach me to kick ass... Rest well mate

Cannonball Run style... Sorry to see you go mate but I know your gonna rock them where ever you be..
  • Solid
I guess God needed a sparring partner.
  • Goobity
A great loss... We'll miss you, Grasshopper.

Then again, his choice of films in the past year or so is disturbing...

    Hell Ride
    Last Hour
    Death Race
    My Suicide
    Absolute Evil

    Go figure.
  • Looks like it wasn't suicide.

"Carradine’s body was found nude, hanging in a closet. David’s rep added, “We can confirm 100% that he never would have committed suicide. It was an accidental death. Everybody is in shock.”"
  • this is SAD SAD news, rest in peace Mr. Carradine
  • harrycaul
seems like he was into auto erotic asphixiation to me. hanging naked in the closet, with a rope that wasn't from the hotel room, no signs of depression, no suicide note...

    what a shame.. RIP
  • That sounds likely to me, then, if those were the circumstances. I guess we can only hope he was feeling good when he died. :\\

seems like he was into auto erotic asphixiation to me. damn what a shame. RIP
  • I really loved His films. And also any time I heard the word monk on the TV he was the first to come in my mind.
  • EEKaWILL
Wasnt he shooting a movie in Bangkok?
  • Man, this is one of those guys who you don't know by name but when you see his picture you're like "Oh, THAT guy!" He will be missed.

    R.I.P:|
  • Tom
Never a great actor, and not really a good one either. Still, I liked seeing him in all of the many terrible movies to which he had loaned his unappealing face and careless attitude.

Say hello to Michael Hutchence for us, David. You will be missed.
  • This is the one time you could lie and at least pretend you thought he was a decent actor. :\\
  • shaytan
    He was awesome actor. R. I . P. David
  • whsmith
sounds like it was an "accident"... I believe David Chen discussed such incidents recently on the /Filmcast, strangely enough... hell of a way to go out.
  • Slaphappy Slim
A true loss. I salute the man and his work.
  • RIP Frankenstein
  • He will be missed, sad news, sad news indeed. RIP Kung Fu.
  • Such sad news. I watched Kill Bill again just the other night. Rest In Peace, David.
  • "Why would you be afraid of death? It would be an inconvenience. I have a lot of undone things and it’s bound to get in the way. But, no, it doesn’t scare me at all." - David Carradine

You will be missed Kung Fu Master!
  • RIP Grasshopper.
"One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me"

normally in an article like this you would say how old the person was
  • Blackbelt4Ever
The world seems a little less bright today. Rest In Peace David.
You will be sorely missed by many many fans. :'(
I'm a martial arts practitioner and this really hits me hard.

Gotta hand it to this guy. He came back BIG TIME as Bill. Not many people can do that. Still trying to figure out what the hell he was doing in BANGKOK.

But he did well, and deserves a cheer to celebrate his incredible life.

    -THE GAJONKA is BACK.
  • Am I a horrible person because the first thing that came to mind while reading the BBC article was Dave Chen's description of auto-erotic esfictiation on the /Filmcast a few weeks back? Yes? Oh, that sucks. It can't be any more shameful a ulogy than the fact that this great actor's last role was as a character named Poon Dong. RIP, man.
  • Goobity
Do you and Peter use the same spellcheck?
  • whsmith
well, I think you're first thought was 100% accurate.
  • shadow
I looked like he was having fun in that role at least.
  • Wait. David Carradine was the STAR of Death Race.
  • SomeGuy
he was the star of Death Race 2000, but only had an appearance in the remake titled Death Race.
  • Duh. That's my point Guy. His appearance in Death Race 2000 is much more notable than a cameo in a fucking remake...*Chenshame*
  • He had a wonderful presence on both the small and big screens. Growing up the family would watch Kung Fu every week during its run; it was a family favorite. I loved his performance in Kill Bill and whenever David Carridine popped up in a movie it was a treat. My thoughts go out to his family.
  • Were there any reports he was depressed or anything? He seemed decent recently, from reports I had read.
  • He used to go to san diego comicon with his son, as I kid I was there reading some comics on the steps, he walked by me and with a sly smile pointed at the sign that said it was a 'fire hazard' to sit on the steps and kept on walking. The man had humor.

    RIP sir.
  • Ant
