total recall

Columbia Pictures has hired Equilibrium and Ultraviolet scribe Kurt Wimmer to pen a remake of Total Recall (which was first announced in February). Wimmer recently worked with the studio on the Angelina Jolie spy thriller Salt, and co-wrote the F. Gary Gray-directed Law Abiding Citizen.

Neal Moritz is producing the movie under his Original Films banner (yes, a company called Original Films is in the remake business). Not much is known about the new film, other than that the story will be a more “contemporized” adaptation of Philip K Dick’s story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, the book that spawned the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film.

First published in April 1966’s Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Wholesale (a pun on the 1962 Broadway Musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale) told the story of a ordinary man who pays to go on a virtually implanted vacation. But the implanted memories of being a secret agent on Mars unleashes deleted memories of his secret past. He discovers physical evidence to support his new old memories, and goes on the run from the government.

The book ends very differently from the Paul Verhoeven movie, with the main character making a deal with the government to return to Rekal to have his past memories suppressed with a new set of heroic wish-fulfillment memories. And again, old deleted memories, similar to the to be implanted memories, are once again revealed to be true. The moral of the story is that a man can’t become something he is not. Even if you can delete the memories, your dreams and fantasies would remain the same. Not very cinematic at all. I’m sure this “remake” will be closer to the Verhoeven film, as a screen adaptation of the book just wouldn’t work too well.  We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, is available in book stores or on Amazon for around $13.

  • I don't mind a movie being remade, but Total Recall? What's wrong with the original?
  • I have no idea. Total Recall is a sci fi classic. Hopefully they cast this right otherwise this could turn sour very quickly.
  • I don't know aside from the fake boob not looking good enough, I say the first adaptation was ♠'s
  • Sweet! Great news now we can watch a brand new, sparkling, CGI third boob!
  • Lol I really don't see a point in remaking this film unless they just want to make the special effects in the movie better.
  • trife
  • Goobity
The original 'adaptation' (meaning - Hollywoods utter failure to use appropriately material it neither understands or can deal with in an insightful manner) sucked all kinds of ass. I have no faith that any update will fare better.

    So speaks Quato.
  • It's true. Philip K Dick stories don't always translate well. A Scanner Darkly and Blade Runner, while still not perfect, were pretty good though.
  • for every Blade Runner we get like two films like Next and Impostor....you need the best filmmaker for the project working on it...I doubt they could get someone like Ridley Scott or even at the level of Paul Verhoeven to direct or re-envision....Kurt Wimmer's Equilibrium is a great flick but then again he also wrote Street Kings and Ultraviolet
  • Yeah I don't have high hopes for this. I didn't pick up on the fact the movie would be set in contemporary times. That's just ridiculous. For some reason I assumed 'contemporized' just meant better effects. But actually setting it in current or near-future times? That's not going to work.
  • making it contemporary is my main issue...how can they involve Mars colony, mutants and alien air factory?...those elements made the original movie such a great science fiction adventure...it sounds to me that this is going to be a really cheap knock-off rather than a remake...because it costs a lot less money to remove all the cool things from the first movie...
  • Two Weeks! This sounds like a really bad idea.

I guess I am not totally against the idea. There are some things about the the Arnold film that can be improved upon, namely the special effects and Arnold's horrible accent. Really concerned about the casting and script, Arnold may not have been the ideal leading man in most peoples eyes, but he was all business on the set and gave 110% all the time.

Hell, just look what they did to the Poseidon Adventure. Never should have touched that film starring Gene Hackman and a stellar cast that included Ernest Borgnine, some films truly are untouchable. I dont know for sure if Total Recall is, but its darn close. Hell why don't they just remake Spartacus while there at it!

Ok, now I am just being silly.
  • verhoeven forever
  • This remake craze will end once Hollywood realizes they aren't making any money off them (meaning you people better not support them because I'm not!). Hollywood needs to realize supporting original ideas is the best plan.
  • TMG
it's really quite simple gentlemen. They want to remake it as PG-13.

    and shit.
  • freemachine
"Get yo ahss to to Mahz." Who the Hell could possibly deliver that line better than the Govenator?
  • Patrick Swayze was originally going to play the role would have been a totally different film..
  • LAZY LAZY LAZY and MORE LAZY.. I'm sick of it!! lol. Soon they'll be remaking the remakes and people WILL STILL GO! If people didn't go they wouldn't make these dumb movies, lol.

PLEASE don't let them touch Alien!
  • hahaha
  • Bastards, I can only hope that they will continue the legacy of the tri-titted woman
  • The original was fine, and the writer's track record is not so hot. I am scared.
  • freemachine
Ok, I'm obviously against this idea, though something just came to mind. Richard Dreyfuss was initially considered for the roll of Quaid before Arnold took over. I've always been curious as to how a less physical actor would have played the part of Quaid. If they took the new script into a different direction and made Quaid out to be a bit more cerebral, then I'm might be interested in the new version.
  • Well, considering this new version is written by the same guy who wrote the scene where Christian Bale slaughters an entire swat team over a puppy dog...I'm going to guess "cerebral" is not the direction it will go.
  • that's of course this doesn't end up a PG remake...theres always a chance a remake will totally deviate from the original film...
  • domino
Thank you for linking to the book so there is at least SOME upside for the original material and artist
  • cholm
Only be interested in this if they got David Cronenberg to come back to do the version he intended to do with William Hurt back before he quit and Verhoeven got the job.
  • This man knows what he's talking about. Cronenberg got robbed. His version would have been amazing.
  • however
"The moral of the story is that a man can’t become something he is not. Even if you can delete the memories, your dreams and fantasies would remain the same."

It would be interesting to see this version on screen.
  • What's wrong with a lot of the movies they remake? They remake them because they were so good... Total Recall was good, but more on the bottom rung on remakes. Honestly, they might go away if people stop reporting them.
  • Actually, they'd only go away if people stopped going to see them, which doesn't look like it will happen, sadly.
  • Dan W
    This is wack
  • They're planning a remake in order to realize that, that remake is totally unnecessary, then plan another remake for that.
    Kinda reminds me of Superman.

I don't get this stuff, why don't they just spend it on something new.
  • Candy Castle
Cronenberg sounds great! I know I would be interested!
  • If this is a more faithful adaptation, then I'll be on board. I'm a huge Philip K Dick fan, and I feel like more people should trust the source when it comes to his work. Even Blade Runner, while it is brilliant, changed several key aspects from Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? which I would've liked to have seen.
  • I think the Remake could be darker and I like to see that, in deed, Hollywood makes to many remakes and some new ideas instead sounds good.
  • Weyland_Yutani
so, if Ultraviolet was simply an odd retelling of Equilibrium, can we expect Total Recall 2 to be an odd retelling of Ultraviolet. It's a stretch, but....I'm just saying.

Actually, Ultraviolet is a very guilty pleasure. I blame Milla.
  • another project that does not need to be remade. stop ruining our films.
  • this makes me sad.
  • After more thought, if they went to the source, the book by Dick I would be totally happy. BUT, only if a studio is on board to making it for THAT reason. When I hear "remake" all I hear is profit. If it is for artistic reasons then sure.

Are there good examples of films that were remade/re-imagined that were more faithful to a source?
  • cholm
John Carpenter's "The Thing", I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
  • Weyland_Yutani
You could argue that the 1997 version of The Shining was made to more closely resemble King's book. I'll stick with Kubrick's classic.
  • EvilKalel
Total Recall doesnt need to be remade!
