Brian Blessed Cast as Odin in Thor

blessed_odin

According to Rich Johnston’s new site Bleeding Cool, Brian Blessed has been cast as Odin, All-Father of Valhalla in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. Frankly, I’m very happy with this news. The only way I could be happier is if somebody could get me confirmation that Blessed would record a commentary track for the film - the one he did for Flash Gordon is a real favorite in my household. I sincerely hope Max von Sydow has heard it.

Blessed is these days more famous for his general all round demeanor, his mountaineering exploits (and mountainous stature) and his BOOMING voice than any specific role, though his Flash Gordon role as Prince Vultan would probably be his most popular turn. That gave rise to his “Gordon’s Alive?” catchphrase which, apparently, he still yells out in his gruff-jolly way for fans whenever asked.

I once heard a stand up comedian do a long routine about sleeping with Blessed’s daughter, but I won’t repeat any of it here or even name the act, not after all of that Russel Brand/Jonathan Ross/Andrew Sachs nonsense. Suffice to say, Blessed’s booming voice came into play in a rather amusing way.

I’m expecting to see several other frequent collaborators of Branagh to come rolling up in the Thor picture, from Richard Briers to Stephen Fry. If any of you know the comic book well enough you might like to tip me off as to what parts could suit them. Are they likely to get only newly minted parts or day player pieces, or are there some key parts for any of them?

The appeal to me with this Thor project is Branagh, really. I don’t think the comic book really means that much to me, though several of Branagh’s previous films, from Dead Again to Hamlet, I’ve liked a great deal. Peter’s Friends, however… that’s a different story. That one, I try to forget.

Bleeding Cool is a comics blog though, Hollywood being what it is, I’m not surprised Johnston had a film related story in only his second day of operations. I know that he actually worked with Blessed in his “other life” as a writer of radio ads, so I’m trusting this story 100%.

Awesome news! Thanks Brendon for keeping us updated on cool UK news. Some of us in the States (read: Colonies) actually care about these things.
  • Awesome NEWS!!! That is perfect casting right there. And it does hurt either that Brian Blessed has worked with Kenneth Branagh in Henry V. DIIIIIIIVE!!!!!
  • Well, he must of been BLESSED to get the job! Get it, blessed. He's a god and...

    :(
  • So, I guess he is BLESSED to have the job. Get it, BLESSED! He's playing a god, his last name is Blessed...

    :(
  • For whatever reason, I was expecting someone like Brian Cox to be cast as Odin. I'm glad he wasn't though.
  • Oh come on Brendon, Peter’s Friends isn't bad. Not my favorite, but it isn't bad. (Mainly I just don't want to admit that Branagh has a subpar film.) As for Blessed, I've liked him in every other Branagh film, so I'm sure I'll like him in Thor.

Nice, look forward to seeing his performance.

I have been saying it for years, Brian Blessed needs to be cast as one of the Dwarves in The Hobbit! He would be freakin perfect!

as awesome as it is that he's playing Odin, I'm a little dissapointed he wasn't cast as Volstagg the Voluminous. That would have been absolutely perfect. Blessed as Odin is pretty sick though.

Aaaaaannnnnnd as I seem to be the first comic fan to post (in response to your comic question anyway...) The biggest Asgardian supporting roles in the Thor comic are Odin, Loki, Heimdall, Balder the Brave, Lady Sif, The Enchantress, The Executioner, and the Warriors Three (Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg). Stephen Fry would make a pretty good Volstagg (if you put him in a fat suit. actually he'd make a pitch perfect Loki but I sincerely doubt that's happening). Richard Briers is hard to cast, because none of the Asgardians look particularly old with the exception of Odin (and he's off limits clearly). Assuming Branaugh is as "immersed" in the comics as he claims, I figure the Warriors Three will be Thor's allies/comic relief for the film; Sif will be the love interest playing off of Enchantress; Loki will be the villain with the Executioner as his henchman and Balder will be a younger Asgardian looking up to Thor.

This is all conjecture, but based on what there is to draw from the comic and how movies generally go, this is how I see it playing out.
  • yeah, it is good news, but they just made casting volstagg very hard for themselves :D
  • I agree, I would have seen him as a great Volstagg. Even Brian Cox even. Might as well throw in some other great actors like Ian McKellan but he's already in a franchise, same with Michael Caine, Michael Gambon or even Terence Stamp.
  • To be honest, now i'm soooo dammmn interested in the movie. It could be epic.

Funny enough, will this be the next wave of 'greek/normadic' mythology in movies? Because Clash of the Titans is coming out next year so...
  • THOR.....AH HAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Protector of our Asgaard!
  • great choice, he's a great actor.
  • Sounds awesome. Thor casting is some of the best i have heard soo far. I Can't wait to hear who's playing Volstagg. (Hope it's not Jack Black)
  • Anti-Septic
Brilliant casting, someone was really thinking for once. Odin was a pivotal role which needed a bigger than life character and I can't believe they found someone to fill it!

    well done!
  • Blessed sounds good.

    Who will play Thor?

I just hope they don't get Nicholas Cage or Christian Bale again.

    Same actors all the time.
  • I saw this coming, but is really good news, they're really trying to gather good actors for this movie. Go Branagh!

Prince Vultan! Fuck yeah! Let this be know forever... as Brian Blessed's day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would really like to see Charles Hawtrey as Jane Foster and Hattie Jacques as Sif. But I fear Hollywood will play it safe. (U.S. Version: please replace with Neil Patrick Harris and Conchita Ferrell respectively.)
