conan2

The debut of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien ended just minutes ago, with Will Ferrell as the sole guest (nice entrance), music by Pearl Jam (good choice for the youngs?), and Andy Richter adding a welcome, if plentiful, laugh track. Also: myriad Choco Taco jokes. The show began with Conan—his red wave on high—introducing a pre-taped segment in which he sprinted in a suit from New York to his new HQ in L.A. on the Universal lot. His soundtrack? Cheap Trick’s “Surrender.”

For the most part, Conan played it safe with the transition. There was a bit of his signature hyper-giddiness schtick per the takeover, but no big surprises or real inventiveness. His monologue even contained a flat L.A. Clippers joke that too closely mirrored one (of thousands) thatĀ Jay Leno phoned in during his womp-womp send-off last week. (Though Leno’s final monologue tribute to Rodney Dangerfield was respectable.) For me the two highlights tonight were the new set, which looks huge on the tube and incredibly classy in high-def, and knowing that The Chin is finally gone…albeit still onĀ NBC in an earlier slot.

Unlike Ferrell, who proclaimed that Conan’s success was a “crapshoot,” we think he’ll do fine. What did you think? How do you foresee Conan, his hair, Andy and Max doing in the months and years ahead?

Editor’s Note: I’ve included a video of the show’s opening after the jump.

Agreed he was playing it safe but I still laughed throughout the show. Perhaps I was overly jubilant from actually laughing at The Tonight Show for the first time in 17 years. I do love me some Letterman though so it will be a tough call night to night.
  • Really amazing!! Conan is at the top of his game. The show was everything I thought it would be. Best show on late night TV. Conan has staked his claim.
  • mangos
nice pic man. dennis wilson is an underrated legend. and pacific ocean blue ruules.

i've seen leno live but conan is my favorite so i've always wanted to go to a conan taping. being a LA local (and close to the nbc studios in burbank) i never had that opportunity... until now. so i'm happy. conan, i'll be seeing you soon!
  • tigersuit
Nice to see more of Conan, but I liked Leno, he will be missed.
  • I've been going through Cone withdrawals for three months already, so this was much needed relief. Just want him to loosen up a bit though later on. Will Ferrell was hilarious.
  • thewalrii
i thought the tram bit was good.

    needs more max though.
  • sean
it seemed like he did a save verse of late night... with for the network and him was smart because there is a different age group that watched leno. he should be a hit, the only problem i can think of is come Sept leno show, mite take the older viewer from him.
  • It stars in less than an hour here...but wait how did you see it before me?? I live in LA. Doesn't the show air in LA?
  • sean
its tape at around 5 or 6 then air on the east coast and midwest at 11 and 10. then again at 11 on the west coast
  • ohhhhhh
  • Yeah he played it safe but that was to be expected. Overall, some solid laughs. In time the studio will hopefully feel less empty and stuffed full of patented Cone-bone quirks. Needed more Max and the band though, they cut way to quick to commercial.
  • Andrew
Solid overall and most of all, funny. It's great to have Conan back and doing his thing on the greatest talk show in the world.
  • Zinc
I loved his Taurus SHO clip.
  • John
LOVED HIM! LOVED HIM ON LATE NIGHT AND LOVE HIM ON THE TONIGHT SHOW!!! Hes the best Late Night Host of Anyone!!!! One of my top 5 favorite Celebs. SO maybe its me sticking up for him.
  • Go Conan...you rock! :)

    Leno, you'll be missed. :(
  • Thrillhouse
The sound was off on the Pearl Jam performance. Ed sounds MUCH better than that, currently, and anyone who is a regular PJ listener knows that. It's a shame.

And I don't think the young people are going to dig that song very much. It was a punky, straight-up rock tune. Well-written music for what it's trying to accomplish and with disposable lyrics. Designed to make you jump at a PJ concert. Not sure it's what the kids are looking for these days.

In other words: It's not shitty Nickelback.

    And thank god for that.
  • I thought it was good. The clips were all hilarious and a great show overall. Just can't wait til they get max into it and start (hopefully) doing some funny oddball sketches.
  • Conan did great! after not seeing him for a while it was good to see him again and bust my ass laughing...
  • Yabbs
Negatives out of the way first: Too much Andy Richter, and the Vocals for Pearl Jam were overpowered by the rest of the band.

Overall though, I loved the first show. The set is gorgeous, and Conan just needs some time to settle in.
  • Don't care much for the critics but Conan is definitely one of my favorites late night talk show host.

The man always makes me laugh with his quirks and even some of the jokes that fall flat with the audience makes me crack up. I guess I just really appreciate the mans sense of humor.

Definitely going to watch this first show. It premieres in my time zone in 30 minutes so heres hoping for a good show.
  • FInished watching the show, I thought it was great. Laughed a numerous amount of times and thought Conan didn't seem nervous and appeared quite comfortable by still keeping his eccentric (some would call it nonsensical) humor while still remaining slightly safe for the Leno crowd.

Good way to start off. Hope he keeps it up.

    Love.
  • I really enjoyed it and I thought Will Ferrell was a really solid first guest. Hopefully Conan's transition will make up for the awful Jimmy Fallon (although The Roots are a kick-ass house band).
  • I thought the monologue was pretty weak, but it was made up for by the awesome Universal Tour and Ford Taurus bits.
  • Pat
I'm so glad I don't have to listen to Leno for awhile. But I will miss Headlines and 99 Cent Store.
  • loved it! great cold open, love the re-worked theme music... amazing open mosaic/intro, looks FANTASTIC in HD... set looks even better than in the preview pic a couple weeks ago

few too many taped deals, but i guess that's something to expect for the first show... hopefully tomorrow will be a little more calm and conan can get back into his groove... definitely starting on a high tho... good stuff :)
  • Mind you it's the first show, but keeping the intro was a fantastic decision. I like Richter, but I think he interjects too much. Conan was playing it a little safe but I could already feel him starting to slip in and get comfortable, give him a month and he'll be in top form again. I've been watching Conan since I was in 7th grade, and to be quite honest, I'm just glad he got this far.

He busted out the hip strings on the first show! And the taurus! I liked it. I'm not sure about Will Ferrell as the first guest ever, but it was a decent show.

    CIRCLE CIRCLE!
  • totoglenn
All the previous Tonight Show Hosts were cool and classy. Conan O'Brien, a total dork, is not in their club. He's too self-centered.
  • First show was alright, but who cares? Conan is the man! I can't believe he is actually hosting the Tonight Show. Sweet, sweet lovin.
  • Loved it! Great to see Conan back in action. Conan + Jimmy = WIN
  • Bonnie M
I found it corny, connived and boring...also stale to see the same people, the same routine. Jay is way, way better....
  • no.
  • Eh...I must be odd, but I never saw O'Brien as very funny. He just acts quirky and awkward, which doesn't equate to funny for me.
  • Solid show.

I love Conan and I hope to see more of Max and Andy.
  • Better then Leno. The Joe Biden joke got me when he asked if the lady had swine flu. The whole Tram joke mad me laugh. (Best parts being circles, Throwing away of the 99cent drink and when he told the guy that red was a girls color.) Will Ferrell was amzing tonight also. I loved his goodbye song.
  • He was great.
I am looking forward to him taking advantage of all the cool things on the Universal set and all the cameos of famous people in LA
  • LOVED IT
it felt alot like LATE NIGHT which is badass, I just hope he keeps his giddiness in the coming shows.
  • The
For real... it's like we get Late Night show and then the actual Late Night show. Fallon and Conan should pull some joint-shows, or switch every year or something. That would be fun.... kinda like when the old power rangers show up in a new power rangers show (horrible example, I know, but I think it gets across the "o-gasm" effect.
  • He did just as good as I expected. Really nice bits, not too much self-insulting (which can get out of hand, despite being really funny) and a great guest.
Of course, the music wasn't to the best quality, but that happens all the time on SNL so I'm just used to it by now. Also I hate Pearl Jam. But, all that aside, very solid first show.
Though I wish the Max Wineberg 7 was still called the 7, and not the Tonight Show Band...
  • I thought it was great! The intro is flashy, the new set is niiice, and most importantly...Conan is back!
  • scott pilgrim avatar FTW!
  • Shanehaven
Generally I am not that big of a fan of Conan but Mr. Smirnoff made him quite funny including Will Ferrell. Andy Richter isn't funny though.
  • Anders
    Where the hell is Joel?
He was awesome on the old show.
  • 123
Conan is/was never funny. Not even for a minute.
Jay Leno is smart, funny and a good person.
  • Ron
Much better than Leno. That git can never make me laugh.
  • edc2
let me see if I understand, last week, jay leno had a show on, then conan had a show on.
now, jay leno has a show on, then conan has a show on.

nice to know america is tackling th' tough issues.
