Avatar 550

Having received two pieces of concept art for James Cameron’s Avatar, the stereophiles at Marketsaw approached Fox to see if they could legitimately run the images. Thankfully, Fox said yes. You can see both of the pictures below the break - though you should be warned that they do reveal some not-really-spoilerish details of the narrative (and I do so too, in providing context).

If you get a slightly King Kong vibe off of this art, you wouldn’t be the only one. Also note that Peter Jackson has written the foreword to The Art of Avatar, the book in which these images - and many, many more - will soon be published.

Here, in the first image you see the full design of a Powersuit. It was just a couple of days back that we saw a partial photograph of a practical suit built for the film. Looking at the full representation here will give you a better sense of its scale.

It seems this particular piece of concept art was well preserved in the final build. Also note the crashed vehicle in the background. From what familiarity I have with the film (from talking to folk, stalking Marketsaw as they stalk Cameron and reading the scriptment and notes) I’d guess that this burning craft is a Samson, a light and fast transit ship with only light armament.

The second image is all new stuff. I think its probably best that you take a look at it before I discuss any of the details.

This one appears to show action from a set piece rather near the end of proceedings. Fleeing in the foreground is another one of the futuristic flying machines (most likely the Dragon Gunship, I think) and behind it is one of the native beasts of Pandora. This one, I think, is a Bansheeray.

There great amount of Pandoran flora and fauna was dreamt up by Cameron to create a very complex alien ecosystem and I think he’s planning to leave it in the background, behind the drama and characterisation. Thankfully, it shouldn’t all be so alien that we won’t be able to understand it – and indeed, the human characters who come to this strange world seem to mostly comprehend the otherness of what they find by referring to it in familiar, Earthly terms.

From Bansheerays to Direwolves, the Leonopteryx to the Direhorse, and of course including the Na’vi, the humanoid natives at the heart of the matter, there’s an awful lot Avatar alienage, the vast majority of it still to be unveiled.

We were promised a movie that would be the same to the movie industry as color was to television.
these concepts are not bad, but the ones in Aliens were better, and how old is that movie?

With CG you can literally create anything. ANYTHING!!! and this is the best they can come up with WTF! Someone needs to have a little sit down talk with Cameron (along with Lucas and Spielberg) and show them some good art. go to conceptart.org and tell me you can find hundreds of better looking concepts than these.

    its amazing :))))))))))))))))
  • Crack open a RIFTS core book from 1990 and take a look at all the robots that look like Harvesters. All of this shit has been done to death, stop comparing.

If I were Cameron I'd be fuming at these being leaked, looked at all the idiots QQing that they're disappointed. LOL they're concept images! Besides, I don't think it will be possible to please everybody especially not with the insane amount of hype the film's getting.
  • Wizard Jenkins
This movie is going to be the coolest thing in years . . . well hopefully. There's always the potential it could be just good and not great; doesn't have the feel of a film that could disappoint too much from the early hype. But this art is awesome!!!
  • Ryan
WOW people in here just aren't grateful anymore, J. Cameron has kept much about the movie secret as soon as he reveals bits of stuff the response you say is "meh"
The footage comes when it comes
  • Zeppelin
JC kept this movie too much secret, and there is too much hype revolving around nothing.
Of course people response is "meh"
When footage will be released the response will be "meh" again.
People are expecting something that Avatar isn't.

...and the "first truly photorealistic cgi" wasn't Matrix Revolution? CGI become old in a six-months timespam. Benjamin Button already looks CGI.
Allow me to be sketpical about the higly anticipated CGI quality of Avatar.
  • I really can't wait.
  • not impressed
meh, this looks like any average sci fi pic set on a jungle landscape. How the hell are we supposed to get excited for the second coming of movies with average images like this?? These look about as original as any amateur with a wacom who likes to draw landscapes. Oh, and there's a robot.
  • Trailer please.
  • Not impressed. Yet.
A mixture of SW III, King Kong, and Matrix Revolutions. I was hoping for something a little more mindblowing and/or original. But hey! its only concept art. The story should be the most engaging thing, so I'm still hopeful.

Although they look cool, I can't imagine anything more impractical then doing anything with a giant robotic suit.
  • Very nice!
  • WOW!! The art concept looks like something from a PS3.
Seeing that Power suit come to life is defiantly going to be mind blowing
I agree with SergeMeister, Gundams in a rain forest with teradactyls is defiantly going to be good.

Oh yeah that powersuit is not a Gundam, it's more of a Mech design.
  • jason B
maybe its just me, but creatively - none of this looks like a world we haven't seen before. maybe the amazement will come in the way they execute what we are looking at.
  • The hype for this movie is building some very huge expectations for a movie that's being labeled a revolution and the second coming of JC. These concept art are a bit unimpressive, i was a expecting something more ethereal and other worldly, it doesnt seem like an alien planet, but more like a revisit to Jurassic Park, this can be a small portion of the planet, we'll see when it comes out, but that mech looks sweet, and the helipad may be ecstatic in 3D movement and soundeffects make a HUGE difference, these are just concept images.
  • glenn
I agree, there is nothing truly off the page about these.
But now start picturing them in your head as live action. Then picture that live action has 3d and this mechwarrior/ powerloader making its away across the screen and in your face. Thats some cool stuff you have to admit.
  • It's just concept, guys - i saw many from for example Alien - nothing special but on video it's another story.

if this movie delivers on its talking points, which is that they will have the first truly photo realistic CGI, then it will be nothing short amazing. if not im sure it will still be a way above average movie.

after doing some research and seeing what other directors like Spielberg and Fincher have said i trust that the visuals will be game changing. people are basing there expectations off of what they already know, the key is to try to understand that this movie is bringing something new to the table in terns of effects.

some of you sound so close minded
  • Johan
Indeed. I´m not worried at all about the awesomeness of Avatars visual effects, but I still have second thoughts about the story and characters. It wasn´t very engaging in the old scriptment. I have heard that Cameron rewrote the whole script and that it doesn´t resemble the old script at all. Fingers crossed that Cameron won´t let the action and effetcs overshadow the story.
  • Where can I find Fincher's words?
  • Amit
i thought terminator salvation's concept art looked better
  • ...
I had a more "Blue-Alien-Chick-from-Mass-Effect" meets Tron, Star Trek, and technology expectation for this film...
whereas these are very King Kong and Jurassic Park meets Terminator and Aliens...
which, given that Terminator and Aliens are Cameron’s movies, maybe I should have seen this style coming...
I'm not saying that these concepts make me think that the movie will be bad or anything...
I was just expecting a more clean future look, not the dirty organic look...
I feel like the dirty industrial future has been done by Cameron already...
    so that's why I'm a little disappointed...
there is so much potential to do an environment that is impossible,
    not tree and bushes...
but obviously there is going to be more to the movie then these two concept shots...
    ...

quite frankly, im getting sick and tired of seeing all these posts for a movie that's produced nothing in way of actual news.

sorry, but im not impressed by random, vague shots of Cameron working on set or concept art. until i see a trailer, i don't give a sh*t.
  • Then why are you reading this site?
  • Does this film plan on being a standalone or part of a trilogy? It looks rad so far! I will now divulge my inner geekdom, and say that the powersuit looks a lot like a machine used in Warhammer 40k, and that's badass..
  • cat
Sweet looking pics but nothing super crazy.
  • I was surprised how familiar the jungle looks... and it is green and not purple. I am glad because purple would really look too alien. And people need something familiar to feel with the characters.

I am a huge fan of James Cameron's work and I can't wait to see his next masterpiece.

I hope it will be a huge success!

  • I never really understood the super-hype for this movie. Oooo it's James Cameron, oooo it's gonna be in 3D, wooooow. So? Remember all the hype for Cloverfield? Exactly... It'll never live up to anyone's expectations and these concept art pieces are nothing special. I don't have any expectations for this movie and these did absolutely nothing to interest me. Advanced looking robotics in a more mountainy amazon, woopteedoo. Hopefully this'll get Cameron and Fox to release at least a teaser in the more near future.
  • You just compared Cloverfield to James Cameron's resume. Funniest thing I've read on this site today.
  • Amon-Re
These 2 look like updated versions of the power loader and dropship from his movie Aliens, I wonder if thats what he meant by everything will seem familiar... :D
jokes aside, I love it and can't wait to see it.
  • Is there someone riding one of those birds in the second picture?
  • Yep. To tell you too much more would spoil the odd thing... but remember that the film is called Avatar, and remember why.
  • Can't wait to see this movie.
  • On my face please.
  • Johan
Amazing stuff. The second artwork shows a scorpion, I guess. It´s a smaller attack aircraft in the script. Don´t think it´s the Dragon, which is the real BIG gunship. My guesss is that what we are seeing here:

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1qPLMlz01yQ/SfIGMOPQXmI...

is the front canopy of the aircraft in the concept art.
  • blah
The second one reminds me of The Incredibles. A lot.
  • Aside from Titanic?
  • I'm very interested to hear what you were expecting. There must be all sorts of expectations for this film out there, and apart from my own I can't quite imagine what they'd be like.
  • I know I wasn't expecting green plant life...considering it's a foreign planet having the same ecosystem is a bit odd...a lot of sites like MarketSaw were giving people impressions how out there this was going to be...people were going to be disappointed with the look no matter what...you pointed out how similar it looks to the environments created for King Kong...If it's King Kong meets Aliens I'm fine with that..King Kong was basically an exercise in special effects rather than making a compelling film so I'm hoping this lands more on the Aliens side of things story-wise...

I'm just wondering how "photorealistic" this film will be since nobody has really developed a convincing CGI character that looks even 75% real....if Weta isn't finished enough shots for a 2min trailer by now I wouldn't be surprised to see it's release date pushed back to 2010...that could be the main reason why they haven't come up with any promotional material...
  • Jake
No it will be definitely released this december, in time for the Oscars. Fox is just scared shitless of Camron and won't do anything unless he says it's ok. A lot of announcements should be made in June with the coverage ramping up from Comic-Con on.

wasn't really diggin the idea before these pics. they look dope
  • fex
I've seen way better. Hell, Cameron has done way better. Both designs look a little clunky. Still really excited about this movie. What little I know about it.
  • My thoughts exactly.
  • I agree, but people saying these pics look "amazing" are really full of themselves.

The hype for this film is starting to spill over a bit. Hopefull we wont be left with a huge mess.
  • monosierra
If someone has posted these images without indicating its from Avatar, I bet people would not be so enthusiastic. Looks like production art from King Kong or any of the Jurassic Park films.

Still, I don't think a few pictures alone can do a film justice.
