Avatar 550

Having received two pieces of concept art for James Cameron’s Avatar, the stereophiles at Marketsaw approached Fox to see if they could legitimately run the images. Thankfully, Fox said yes. You can see both of the pictures below the break - though you should be warned that they do reveal some not-really-spoilerish details of the narrative (and I do so too, in providing context).

If you get a slightly King Kong vibe off of this art, you wouldn’t be the only one. Also note that Peter Jackson has written the foreword to The Art of Avatar, the book in which these images - and many, many more - will soon be published.

Here, in the first image you see the full design of a Powersuit. It was just a couple of days back that we saw a partial photograph of a practical suit built for the film. Looking at the full representation here will give you a better sense of its scale.

It seems this particular piece of concept art was well preserved in the final build. Also note the crashed vehicle in the background. From what familiarity I have with the film (from talking to folk, stalking Marketsaw as they stalk Cameron and reading the scriptment and notes) I’d guess that this burning craft is a Samson, a light and fast transit ship with only light armament.

The second image is all new stuff. I think its probably best that you take a look at it before I discuss any of the details.

This one appears to show action from a set piece rather near the end of proceedings. Fleeing in the foreground is another one of the futuristic flying machines (most likely the Dragon Gunship, I think) and behind it is one of the native beasts of Pandora. This one, I think, is a Bansheeray.

There great amount of Pandoran flora and fauna was dreamt up by Cameron to create a very complex alien ecosystem and I think he’s planning to leave it in the background, behind the drama and characterisation. Thankfully, it shouldn’t all be so alien that we won’t be able to understand it – and indeed, the human characters who come to this strange world seem to mostly comprehend the otherness of what they find by referring to it in familiar, Earthly terms.

From Bansheerays to Direwolves, the Leonopteryx to the Direhorse, and of course including the Na’vi, the humanoid natives at the heart of the matter, there’s an awful lot Avatar alienage, the vast majority of it still to be unveiled.

  • Wowzers! These look awesome!

A: What's the point, if you have nothing valuable to contribute? Stop clogging the board.
B: Epic fail. I hate you.

Semi-Valuable contribution: This movie is looking better and better. The already deep universe with the promise of much more has me pumped. If this succeeds it could spawn a pretty awesome sci-fi universe to explore. I really hope all this hype isn't for nothing.

This was not what I was expecting from Avatar at all,
I'm a litte disapointed by these...
but at the same time they still have interest,
just not in the same way as before...
could be much worse I guess...
a trailer would be nice anytime now...
    ...
  • Aside from Titanic, I just love whatever that man puts out and he's awesome in interviews as well. This is going to be awesooooome :D :D
  • Gundams in a rain forest with teradactyls ! I'm definitely watching this when it comes out.
  • Lol, It's Mechassault: The Movie! :p
  • The
Memories of Gundam 8th MS team go streaming by...

But really, what's with the green plants? Not very alien like to me.
  • This concept art does look very good!

I enjoyed the overall feel of PJ's King Kong, but didn't care much for the material. Hopefully, with awesome action sequences and aliens at the heart of this story , this will make more of an impact.

I'm anxious/excited to see how James Cameron works with his new 3D technology to bring these concepts to life.

as someone on another site pointed out, the powersuit looks a lot like the harvester from T4 (at least the shape). but i guess these designs were done well before t4 was even an idea.
  • Kelt
    They look nothing alike
  • mcgruff
  • How about a cross between the power loader from Aliens AND maybe the harvester? Either way it does have a very King Kong feel too it. I know this is just concept art but I was hoping to see some actual shots cause it's just eh ok for me so far.

I was actually kind of digging the way I didn't know ANYTHING about how this would look. but getting a little clue, I'm not dissipointed...
  • I'm still unsure what to think of Avatar...these images help though. They look incredible.
  • the only problem is that it's "concept" artwork...while it's nice to look back at this stuff after a film...before hand it's very ambiguous and doesn't represent the actual film... we need stills not artwork
  • ... And I Jizz In My Pants!
  • Kelt
Looks kind of bland to be honest
  • james cameron is my favorite truck driver

Wow. Until now, I had virtually no idea what Avatar was actually about, despite the numerous updates about it on this blog. But this just looks too kickass.
  • Fox should be making sure people like yourself are informed about this film...since they're betting big money on it...a lot of my friends are clueless about this film and they're the target audience which is a bad sign...there's some good points of being secretive about a franchise type film but this is somewhat original....if anything the 3D aspect will scare people like myself off....3D still seems about gag and gimmick shots instead of improving the movie experience
  • I'm definitely NOT impressed.
  • I know what you mean I just a meh feeling when I saw these...granted it's concept art and they had a whole team creating this stuff...you never know it could be just the vehicle designer's art...I know they had different artists working on separate things...planet surface, aliens, human environments, action sequences, sets/technology, earth, creatures and vehicles

I'm still amazed Fox hasn't started the marketing on this thing...

  • Don't believe me when I say I'm sick of the hype...GIVE ME MORE!

this movie has the feel like king kong the special effects is done by weta company but this looks amazing i am going to watch these movie at any cost and feel this images in 3d it will be awesome thanks Brendon Connelly for uploading it
  • Kenneth
Actually, I'm disappointed too. The first piece looks like it was stolen straight out of the Wookee planet in Star Wars III. And the second one is just.... typical.
  • Nothing really pops out. I want to see LIVE ACTION footage.
  • Meeehhh
  • monosierra
If someone has posted these images without indicating its from Avatar, I bet people would not be so enthusiastic. Looks like production art from King Kong or any of the Jurassic Park films.

Still, I don't think a few pictures alone can do a film justice.
  • jason B
no i totally agree with you - none of this is a new world. i was thinking maybe its the execution that will blow us away...but i was hoping for something created that whent beyond any imagination before it.
  • I agree, but people saying these pics look "amazing" are really full of themselves.

The hype for this film is starting to spill over a bit. Hopefull we wont be left with a huge mess.
  • My thoughts exactly.
  • fex
I've seen way better. Hell, Cameron has done way better. Both designs look a little clunky. Still really excited about this movie. What little I know about it.
  • joe
wasn't really diggin the idea before these pics. they look dope
  • I'm very interested to hear what you were expecting. There must be all sorts of expectations for this film out there, and apart from my own I can't quite imagine what they'd be like.
  • I know I wasn't expecting green plant life...considering it's a foreign planet having the same ecosystem is a bit odd...a lot of sites like MarketSaw were giving people impressions how out there this was going to be...people were going to be disappointed with the look no matter what...you pointed out how similar it looks to the environments created for King Kong...If it's King Kong meets Aliens I'm fine with that..King Kong was basically an exercise in special effects rather than making a compelling film so I'm hoping this lands more on the Aliens side of things story-wise...

I'm just wondering how "photorealistic" this film will be since nobody has really developed a convincing CGI character that looks even 75% real....if Weta isn't finished enough shots for a 2min trailer by now I wouldn't be surprised to see it's release date pushed back to 2010...that could be the main reason why they haven't come up with any promotional material...
  • Jake
No it will be definitely released this december, in time for the Oscars. Fox is just scared shitless of Camron and won't do anything unless he says it's ok. A lot of announcements should be made in June with the coverage ramping up from Comic-Con on.
  • Aside from Titanic?
  • blah
The second one reminds me of The Incredibles. A lot.
  • Johan
Amazing stuff. The second artwork shows a scorpion, I guess. It´s a smaller attack aircraft in the script. Don´t think it´s the Dragon, which is the real BIG gunship. My guesss is that what we are seeing here:

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1qPLMlz01yQ/SfIGMOPQXmI...

is the front canopy of the aircraft in the concept art.
  • On my face please.
  • Can't wait to see this movie.
  • Is there someone riding one of those birds in the second picture?
  • Yep. To tell you too much more would spoil the odd thing... but remember that the film is called Avatar, and remember why.
  • Amon-Re
These 2 look like updated versions of the power loader and dropship from his movie Aliens, I wonder if thats what he meant by everything will seem familiar... :D
jokes aside, I love it and can't wait to see it.
  • I never really understood the super-hype for this movie. Oooo it's James Cameron, oooo it's gonna be in 3D, wooooow. So? Remember all the hype for Cloverfield? Exactly... It'll never live up to anyone's expectations and these concept art pieces are nothing special. I don't have any expectations for this movie and these did absolutely nothing to interest me. Advanced looking robotics in a more mountainy amazon, woopteedoo. Hopefully this'll get Cameron and Fox to release at least a teaser in the more near future.
  • You just compared Cloverfield to James Cameron's resume. Funniest thing I've read on this site today.
