Pixar’s Up Finally Gets First Negative Review

up review

For the last couple years, Pixar has held the title of having the best reviewed mainstream movie release of the year. Ratatouille and WALL-E both ended with 96% with over 200 reviews (only 9 rotten). Two days before the nationwide release, Pixar’s Up is riding high with a perfect 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with over 40 reviews.

But of course, someone is always bound to come along with a contrarian view. New York critic Armond White has filed the first negative Up review (it hasn’t been officially added into the Tomatoemeter rating just yet).

White is known for having an differing viewpoint than traditional critics. He wrote one of the 5 negative reviews of Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler and one of the four negative reviews of The Class. His list also includes unfavorable thumbs downs for Star Trek, Milk, Slumdog Millionaire, The Dark Knight, Gone Baby Gone, Iron Man, There Will Be Blood, and Zodiac. Did I mention that he gave Bedtime Stories a positive review?

White’s Up review is essentially an attack agains tthe non-Brad Bird-directed Pixar movies. Here is an excerpt from his review:

“Every Pixar film—including the new Up, gushed over by Cannes Film Festival shills—is greeted with nearly patriotic fervor. This absurdity clarifies contemporary news media’s unprincipled collusion with Hollywood capitalism.” … “Pixarism defines the backward taste for animation. Refuting Chuck Jones’ insistence that he didn’t create his great Warner Bros. cartoon for children, Pixarism domesticates and homogenizes animation—as if to preserve family values.” … “After ripping-off Albert Lamorisse’s classic The Red Balloon, dispersing it into Carl’s thousands of colorful orbs, Pixar then literalizes the meaning of flight as a commercial icon: Up. Here, it’s simply the means to “adventures” and not an ecstatic elevation of individual identity. Last year, elitist film nerds forgot how Hou Hsiao Hsien’s Flight of the Red Balloon also dishonored Lamorisse’s beautiful tale—as they cynically overrated the entropic Wall-E. All this deflated cinema and Pixarism mischaracterizes what good animation can be, as in Coraline, Monster House, Chicken Little, Teacher’s Pet, The Iron Giant. Up’s aesthetic failure stems from its emotional letdown.”

One bad review isn’t likely to bring Pixar’s floating house down to earth. I’d be surprised if this movie leaves theaters with more than 10 negative reviews.

  • I think he's using these reviews as gimmicks. But don't quote me
  • Zinc
I'm also not sure if he's really the most dedicated troll ever or if he really is like this.
  • 'most dedicated troll ever' haha! If I there is such a thing he def is the one...
  • "I think he's using these reviews as gimmicks" -Steelo
  • I hate critics like that, either they have no taste, or just like to be "opposite" of everyone else. I haven't seen Up, so I can't comment on that. But to give negative reviews on ALL these, The Wrestler, Slumdog, There Will Be Blood, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Star Trek, and others means he has shit taste or just does it get a reaction from people.
  • Mike
I imagine having the lone negative review for a movie drives up web traffic quite a bit, and by filling his reviews with needless jargon he doesn't immediately come across as a troll.
  • He lost me as soon as he said that the worst official-canon film that Disney ever made, which was a complete corporate sell-out of over-the-top characters and plot failure, and which caused some of the greatest film artists of all time to be fired because of the switch to CGI, is somehow an animation benchmark. *barf*
  • JoShmo
I LOATHE this motherf*cker. Up could very well be a terrible movie (doubt it) but even if he thought it was great he would give it a negative review just for the attention it brings. Why is he even considered a worthy critic if he hates movies that the overwhelming masses love? He has a terrible track record and needs to be fired because clearly he cannot do his job.
  • Your first sentence doesn't really make sense.

The guy obviously has a very diffrent taste in movies, wish is not a bad thing - he'd be good friend with my ex-girlfriend's bitch mother who is told me Shawshank Redemption was the stupidest movie she ever saw and "didn't get it".
  • Haha! How could she "not get" 'Shawshank Redemption'?
  • Armond White is a fool. The man just wants attention. He gives positive praise to simplistic mediocre films and the one's that are actually substantive, entertaining and so on he dislikes.

His dissection of film is a most unprofessional one. He never goes into detailing the "problems" from the film instead he gives us example after example comparing and contrasting instead of giving us specifics.

And he liked "Chicken Little" for gosh sakes. He's entitled to his opinion but his taste in film is quite sour. Just take a look at his past reviews.

I'll be watching UP in IMAX Friday. =)
  • That's playing in IMAX? I didn't know that.
  • Digital 3D. My mistake.
  • SPARTACVS
Well, he also holds up The Iron Giant as a pinnacle of animation which I completely agree with, but that doesn't exactly take balls to say. However, for hating on Star Trek, TDK, Iron Man, and Zodiac he can go suck some.
  • I liked The Iron Giant, but this guy is something else.
  • Bnitro
They ripped off The Red balloon, because they used balloons? Guy just wants attention.
  • How does this guy even have a job?
  • Fir3Wolf
Coraline and the Iron Giant are the only good movies in that little list of his. I never heard of this guy so his opinion doesn't matter to me at all. Every other review has been positive, including the reviews about it on this site. Can't wait till Friday to see the movie.
  • Caleb
He was the first to crack Star Trek's winning spree also. At least he's predictable.
  • Peter you forgot to mention he also gave "Confessions of a Shopaholic" a good review. . I would love to see a list of this idoits favorite films I'm guessing Battlefield Earth apears somewhere. I'm up for hearing an alterative opinion but all of this guys comments on movies read more like a comment on the socitey that likes those films and I'm sorry if you hated Star Trek, Iron Man, Slumdog Millionar, The Dark Knight and The Wrestler maybe you shouldn't be a movie reviewer.
  • doesn't he ever like any movie? Oh, right, just Bedtime Stories...
  • and chicken little
  • Armond White is the worst reviewer alive. Almost always you can expect him to somehow give great movies negative reviews and bad movies positive ones. Most of the time I just take a negative review from him as a positive and vice verse.
  • Dammit! WHY WON'T HE CONFORM?!

    /s
  • sometimes I wonder if he's legit or not!
  • joker47
Obviously this guy is just out to get his name in lights. If he had that kind of streak disliking those movies above, any movie that gets critical acclaim he will likely bash. He is no true critic. It is okay to not like a movie, but to constanty not like so many movies is just a gimmick. This guy is no critic,,,he is a phoney.
  • Well, based on this article, mission accomplished.
  • Weyland_Yutani
...and that mission is to get the paper he works for attention. Again, as evidenced by threads like this, mission accomplished.

I don't condone his opinions, but the man is doing his job.
  • [A]
I think Armond White should definitely write for /film
  • Wouldn't accept his application, even if he said he'd write for free :)
  • How's it feel dropping some fresh meat into the piranha tank every once in a while, Peter?
  • Those excerpts made no sense. The writing was almost as bad as a Hunter Stevenson review.
  • Woah let's not get crazy here...Armond's reviews aren't THAT bad (they are).
  • skaught
clearly you havent read his concise, engaging reviews of the latest breaking bad episodes. i still do not understand hate for the man, his writing skills are above and beyond the tripe coming from someone like alex billingston.
  • Can't argue with the dig on Alex Billingston. He writes like a 5 year old. However, H.S. writes like a 13 year old addicted to Thesaurus.com.
  • Carlos
-This has nothign to do with race, but-

It's funny how a black man named White, gives good movies bad reviews and good movies bad reviews. Almost seems Seussian.
  • /ambient
Armond White's Dark Knight review is pretty laughable. You can clearly see through his writing and realize the guy didn't understand the movie.
  • When I was a litle kid in NY Rex Reed gave 90% of all movies a negative review. This guy appears to be in the same boat!

    chuck
  • IMAXRIPOFF
I love people ripping into him on his site.
  • MrW
    I am not surprised.
  • Drbendy
I don't agree with his idea of a good film and he obviously does this sort of thing for attention. But i do think Pixar need to be careful they don't turn into confectioners, I haven't seen UP but Wall-E just managed to avoid it even though the second half of the film felt like a straight to video sequel. Don't flame me but it's worth PIxar listening to such dissenting voices to realise that sad stories, talking dogs and glissando strings doesn't always spell pathos.

I did like this line as well
"They buy animation to extend their childhood like men who buy cars for phallic symbols."

Perhaps not applicable to all animation but it is a valid observation
  • IMAXRIPOFF
His observation isn't valid, he's just a bitter black dude. Guy needs to get laid.
  • Drbendy
Sorry about deviating from the Slashfilm programme, *feels cold hard barrel of gun against back* PIXAR ARE WITHOUT DOUBT THE GREATEST FILM MAKERS, THEY ARE UNTOUCHABLE. Normal service has resumed *Swallows Cyanide tablet*
  • twwww
i find it funny that the people reviewing movies often are the people that know the least about them.

remember when watchign movies was about a good time?
  • mangos
his transporter 3 review is classic just for the line under the title. http://www.nypress.com/article-19048-transcendent...
  • Jeez, thanks for finding that one, Mangos. Transporter 3 was one of the shittiest movies I've seen in the past year, and White claimed "Buster Keaton is smiling and Spielberg should take notes"?

Anyone who hasn't read that review yet: do it. It would be a perfect review if it was a parody, but it's not. At least I'm guessing it's not. It's as if someone straight-faced declared "Troll 2" a cinematic masterpiece.

Too bad I only clicked the link after leaving a comment already below. I seriously would like to kick this guy's ass now.
  • bubbajosh
Yeah, that was laughable, to say the least...Transporter 3 was transcendant?

Not as much as this total hack's useless opinions.
  • FUCK Armond White. That fucking asshole just says this shit to get attention
  • Armond White apparently wishes to gain notoriety from bad remarks about good movies. He may have these opinions and that's fine, but I get the feeling that he may be one of those critics who puts down movies with hopes of fame.
(Also I didn't read any other comments, so if i duplicated someones argument just consider it solidifying their opinion).
  • Armond White = most entertaining critic ever.
