Carl Erik Rinsch to Direct Alien Remake?

carlerikalien

In April it was revealed that director Ridley Scott is “toying around with the idea” of doing a Alien prequel or reboot. Bloody Disgusting’s sources claim that Michael Costigan, Ridley Scott and even Tony Scott are all on board to produce a new film in the Alien series, with commercial/music video director Carl Erik Rinsch at the helm. Rinsch is also a member of Ridley Scott’s production company RSA. No details about the plot or timeline (we’ve heard the words “reboot” and “prequel”), but apparently the plan is to return to the original idea of one alien on one spaceship.

I have compiled some of Rinsch’s more impressive commercials in another post called The Commercials of Carl Erik Rinsch. You must check out his work. Watching his commercials, it’s easy to see why he might be a choice for a 21st Century Alien film. He is able to effectively combine realistic visual effects with live action imagery to create a magically compelling story.

  • John
chris cunningham should do it. he's a member of the RSA, too.
  • if anyone can do the original Alien justice it would be this guy. His commercials are practically short film rather than an actual commercial. I could see this guy doing any type of sci-fi film and making it just kick ass. Having seen his commercials and how well done they are I wonder how good he can do with a big budget sci-fi film?
  • jjj
    OK Rinsch...
  • Brazwen
where can i see his commercial? cuz i want to have an idea how good is he going to make this movie
  • It really seems like this might happen, which as far as I can tell is a good thing. Don't let us down if you do get it Rinsch.
  • Yes, prequel, the space jockey race please!!!!

And the most important thing, Ridley is on the project.
  • Well this is a surprise. I wonder if the executives at Fox have turned a new leaf (meaning no more quick cash ins).

Its still to early to tell if this will turn out well but with Ridley Scott being involved in the production does make this situation a whole lot better.

Heres hoping for the return of quality "Alien" films.
  • Coincidentally Alien was released 30 years ago to the day - No1 US movie May 28th 1979

    Why remake a classic masterpiece?

    Pointless..
  • NOT YOU
"He is able to effectively combine realistic visual effects with live action imagery to create a magically compelling story." - YOU WHAT? i think you mean his VFX supervisor, digital compositor & animator etc are able to do this...why the fucking confusion all the time?? he's the director -

chris cunningham has been going on and on about making a film for years, whereas Gondry and Jonze have made them he is still talking about it - he is incapable of spearheading such a big project. he just likes to piss about doing the same thing over and over again whilst all the geeks get wet over it.

and ultimately - why remake a classic??????? FOX keep fucking EVERYTHING up these days.
  • It takes a certain kind of filmmaker to know how to work with visual effects. A lot of directors don't even deal with that side of things, passing off the work to the vfx crew (ILM tells the director how it could work, and the director works around the effects and not with the effects).

But looking at Rinsch's commercials, you can tell that like Cunningham, he knows how to use and harness vfx as one of the many tools in his filmmaking arsenal.
  • Hey look it's going to be Terminator: Salvation all over again. I can't wait for this to bomb too.
  • Terminatat Salvation proves that certain franchises don't have the legs to carry on.
  • RPK
Why won't Scott just direct this himself? The visuals seem impressive, but I hate the idea of leaving this to such a novice director. Just reeks of Scott wanting to produce this movie with a cheap director. I smell another bomb.
  • ----
Who wants to remake their own movie? What would be the point?

The driving principle of remakes/reboots/whatever you want to call them should typically be that you have a fresh and different way to approach the original.

Of course it will bomb, nobody needs a magical genie to predict that.
  • RPK
If it's an Alien reboot, I can understand that. But if it's a prequel, set from the pov of the space jockey, then there is no reason Scott would need to give a different perspective. It worked great for Lucas with Episode 1...Scratch that...It worked great for .....This brings to a totally different point. Has there ever been a great prequel movie? I can't think of one.
  • ----
If you really think about it, what exactly would a prequel consist of? The main character would be the giant alien space jockey? Sure, he looked cool as a lifeless set-piece, but come on.

That's not going to fly. If anything happens with this project it will most certainly be a reboot.

This Film Must Not Be Re-Made.

a prequel or origin story perhaps, but a Remake Must Absolutely Not Happen. even an origin story would be difficult.

Let us not forget the ABOMINATION ("newborn") in alien resurection - which has to my knowledge still gone unpunished.
Such corruption of this sacred franchise is strictly forbidden.
  • dlb
sorry dude. we don't need a prequel either. What do we need to know? where the alien came from? Ambiguity is awesome, leave it that way.

just let sleeping dogs lie... better yet, re-release Alien in theaters and just celebrate a great film.
  • Weyland_Yutani
There definitely is that argument. I don't know what to think.
  • vva
Bloody-Disgusting has now updated to say it might actually be the ORIGIN movie that Scott has been talking about for a few years now... in which case is a good thing.
  • Drbendy
Why on earth would we want an origin story, what is the aliens story? I doubt they were once harmless entities with acidic blood who decided to turn nasty because someone shit on their lawn. They are highly evolved kliling machines, perhaps a time lapse movie of evolution. the crux of Alien's genius was what it didn't show, let's not ruin it with an awful back story.
  • WTF. Why are they doing this to us? Why are they remaking a classic film? and why the hell are they rebooting this? They're remaking or rebooting EVERYTHING these days.

    what bullshit.
  • ----
Relax, you'll still be able to enjoy the original just as much as you ever have.

Its amusing to see people who are still shocked by these remake/reboot announcements.
  • excellent idea. why don't they remake blade runner next? i mean, the VFX could be SO MUCH better now, right? right.

me, i'm going to get started on my harry potter remake. i feel this franchise could use a little updating.
  • Alien has been done to death. While Scott's Alien was good James Camerons Aliens was GREAT and one of the best movies ever made. You can never top it so why even try at this point.
Deep down every movie fans know that!

Aliens was practically a completely different movie in theme and tone, comparing it too the first is sort of pointless.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Alien is considered a science fiction classic, held in very high regard for many, many reasons. I'm sure many prefer Cameron's action sequel, which is also held in high regard, but it is rarely considered the more meaningful film. I love them both.
  • terry
a guy who does TV commercials andmusic videos can not direct a good movie it have proven many times who remembers what Greg and Colin Strause did with Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem and director Jean-Pierre Jeunet did with Alien Resurrection this movie will FAIL like the others
  • Weyland_Yutani
    David Fincher?
  • Static
How about Ridley Scott............. he began by directing commercials.
  • I would have loved to see Duncan Jones take it on but Rinsch seems capable....I think the biggest part of the equation is Ridley Scott's involvement...I'm glad to see he's apart of the project and someone he trusts is directing...I assume that they want to develop sequels or even explain the origins of the xenomorphs...a reboot was the best way to do it since they need a Ripley character...Fox has taken too many liberties to bring back Weaver
  • At least Scott is part of it...
  • ...
Anybody else getting the Blomkamp/Halo vibe from this?
Just the way it's being handled I mean...
not the whole being stuck in development hell part...
though I would prefer that this stayed in development hell...
I have little to no faith that Fox will make this into a good movie,
and yet, I will still probably go see it...
    Screw you Fox. Screw You.
    ...
  • Another reboot...is there no creativity in Hollywood anymore (or at least a tiny bit)?
  • I'm going to REBOOT STAR TREK...again! I'm gonna call it "STAR TREK..AGAIN"
  • Cat
Why would they get a commercial director? Lol
  • God, I have SUCH mixed feelings about this. I'd love to see the Alien series get back on track, and knowing Ridley Scott would have his hand in it goes a long, long way...

...but I'm going to stay REALLY skeptical until we get some strong indications that this won't be another just-OK visual FX-fest along the lines of Salvation. As in getting a REALLY GOOD script, and knowing the director (and the actual on-set, decision-making producers) are all entirely focused on making an artistic, scary, balls-to-the-wall film, not just something to appeal to the widest audience.

I still have a lot of trouble seeing that happen unless the name on the director chair reads CAMERON or SCOTT--and in the latter case, to be even clearer, make it R. SCOTT (sorry, but for as many cool flicks as Tony Scott's made, he's made just as many suckfests). Barring those, I'd certainly be down with a chair that reads RAIMI. Or, and here's a left-field one: ARONOFSKY.

Give me one of those--talented, ambitious visionaries who marry incredible style with a focus on putting storytelling and character development first--and I'll sign on in a heartbeat.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Good post. I definitely agree. I'm really hoping that R. Scott is just trying to extend himself here so that he doesn't have to be on set every day. It's hard to tell at this point what they might mean to do.

I really can't believe that Ridley Scott would risk harming his stake in this, but then who knows.
  • I think with Fox being the studio here, this movie won't be as good as it should be.

Anyway, I'm more hopeful for a prequel than a 'remake' or 'reboot' anyway. Reboots should not be the "NEW WAVE" of Hollywood but whatever I say won't stop it.
  • And I'm kinda shocked to see so many people above me eating this up.

NOt to say that Rinsch is NOT a good director, but I don't trust Fox or do I think a remake is needed. Where does it stop with the 'reboots', that's the real question.

    If it's a prequel, then that's different.
  • RPK
LOL, I just had a great idea for a movie reboot.

I can't wait till they reboot 'The Great Escape'. It's going to be sooo fucking max when we see Shia LaBeouf reprising Steve McQueen's character, screaming, "No, no, no, no!" as the Nazis chase him while riding his motorcycle on the German countryside!
  • Weyland_Yutani
oh man, I don't even want to think about this being bad. Don't jinx it.

It smells pretty scary, but I'd like to think that it all depends on the amount of Scott's involvement.
  • Scott isn't involved in that way. The "only" person I could trust with this who isn't Ridley Scott or James Cameron would be Neill Blomkamp. I still think Blomkamp would have been the only guy to do a "great" Terminator movie. Way better than what Mcdonald G produced.

I have absolutely no hope for this film.
  • BanChange4ever
    WAAHH, WAAHH, WAAHH!!!

Your threatening the memories of my youth!
  • Weyland_Yutani
Remake would be a nightmare, but I sort-of think that their idea is to just get back to the original Alien environment. A fresh story from that set-up is something that would arouse my interest. I think origin and prequel are just catch words that get tossed around because they don't have a quick word to describe a new story from the same environment.

If they can create a compelling human story and steer clear of any sort of established mythology, they have a chance to do something cool. I think that is the whole point - they want to remove what we know about the Aliens, remove the evil corporation's involvement (or, at most, tell a story that explains the WY awareness). Going back to this point, they have the opportunity to retain everything cool about the 1st film, get back to that unforgiving space environment, and tell a story about humans encountering this for the first time.

Robot or human, someone lived to tell The Company, what they found. There IS a story in that. I'd like to see it.
  • I think they should be working on a follow up for AVP ... It should be called AVP:Outbreak ... with a scientific corporation cloning the original alien Queen and begin harvesting eggs testing them on animals instead of humans to create a hybrid Alien super soldier, with the Xenomorphs facehugers inside of animal host it would create some intresting Xenomorphs hybirds
  • _spinster_
if this is a prequel wouldn't still be an alien vs predator movie because in the first alien tht ship was filled with eggs, and it was obviousley a predator ship since they harvested the aliens, i think it would be cool to seee the aliens hunt the predators this time.
