Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

A new trailer for Werner Herzog’s (Grizzly Man) Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans has found its way online. The film is a quasi-remake of Abel Ferrara’s infamous 1992 film, which starred Harvey Keitel. The new film stars Nicolas Cage as a crooked drug-addicted cop who takes sexual favors for bribes. The film co-stars Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Coolidge and Fairuza Balk.

I’m not quite sure what to make of this. The trailer doesn’t impress me in the slightest, but I’ll see any movie Herzog makes. Why did Herzog want to make this movie? He claims hes never seen the original. The remake isn’t even a remake. Herzog himself calls it “a completely independent autonomous story.” Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

    i'd really like to see cage and depp star in a movie together where one just attempts to act more bat shit crazy then the other one for like 2 hours 45 minutes, hopefully would be set in Las Vegas and receive no oscars, just a legion of cult fans
  • This looks like it has promise although I think Xibit was in this and the line should have been read something like this:

    "He's behind 3 homicides and countless battery counts on vehicles that didn't need to be pimped.."

  • The original was great. This looks NOTHING like it. I just wonder why they even bothered to call it Bad Lieutenant, it's not like that name is going to give it much of a built in fan base, I know like two people who have even heard of the original.

    Denzel Whitaker? I can only assume he is the offspring of Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker. That makes him the most perfect BAMF in the world. Only way he could get better is if Samuel L. Jackson had something to do with his birth..

    I don't understand the use of "remake" in the description, unless Herzog just felt the need to credit his inspiration. Whatever.

    Cage abusing himself and walking the edge of sanity -- that is a good fit.

    Yes, it looks bad... but its Herzog! He's made some great stuff. Who knows. I'm still going, like everyone with Terminator: Salvation except McG has never payed South American natives to pull a steamboat over a hill for a movie.

    Looks like it could be a pretty good movie. Not to familiar with Herzogs work and I didn't care to much for Grizzly Man so I passed on see it.

    Scratch that I know the director, I forgot he was the one who made Rescue Dawn and while not totally accurate it was still a good movie.
  • Herzog is not usually concerned with factual accuracy, it's all about the big picture. Some of his documentaries have fabricated moments and some of his fictional films have shocking realities behind them.

    Herzog doing Ferrera starring Cage... I mean, this sounded like a car wreck from conception and the trailer plays that way. I'm going to wait and see. Herzog is a genius but I would rather him do his own thing than re-make Ferrera. Cage... well, he's Nicholas Cage. At this point if he makes a good movie it is by accident and not by intention.
