Buffy the vampire slayer

Hollywood is developing a big screen reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Buffy creator Joss Whedon. Did you hear that? its the simultaneous gasp of Buffy fanboys (and fangirls) worldwide.

Fran Rubel Kuzui, who directed the original 1992 movie which spawned the television series, is developing the relaunch with Vertigo Entertainment. The characters and canon created in the television series will be completely abandoned.

According to Reuters, the goal would be to “make a darker, event-sized movie” with “franchise potential.” The story would follow a new vampire slayer who must step up to protect the new generation. Kuzui says the the new movie will hopefully take “Buffy into a new place.” The parties won’t rule out Whedon’s involvement, but are currently meeting with writers and hearing pitches.

I have yet to really give the television series a chance, but everyone I know with geek cred swears by it. I never thought that the concept was anything really special. It seems to me that Whedon’s characters and character development elevated the show above other typical genre series. And a big screen movie or television show without his involvement would most likely suck.

I didn't think a Buffy movie could be made now-a-days without Whedon??? How can this happen? As a proud Whedonist, I SPIT on this movie...the idea of this movie!!! I hope an apocalyptic FAIL on this movie and Kuzui NEVER works in Hollywood or near a script or camera EVER!

If SMG is not Buffy then this movie will just go into the tank and be a flop

    *sigh* Oh dear...

I plant my flag firmly in the camp of: HATE IT and I HOPE THEY DON'T A BUFFY RE-BOOT!!
(that's a camp right?) I think if you dissect Buffy - she is her friends. You cannot simply remove Willow and Xander any more than you can cut off one of her limbs. If you remove her essence - she is no longer BUFFY. Period. Hollywood is soooo greedy. Write your own "Vampire Slayer" character - maybe one of the ones that came before/after Buffy? Within the mythos that Whedon created? Like the Fray comic book. Please Hollywood, go a different route. Don't remake Buffy - Just expand on the "Vampire Slayer" Mythos. Okay? Got it? Good.

THIS IS WRONG!!! What's next? a Star Wars movie without George Lucas? or a new Harry Potter book without J. K. Rowling? I don't know what they are thinking. It is beyond my understanding why anyone would even suggest the idea of making a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie without Joss. It would not only be stupid to attempt to do that, but it is also a slap on the face to all the fans.

That's not Buffy at all: No Joss Whedon, and not the same caracter. What the hell are they doing. Just call it something else, it will be another random horror/action movie and it won't embarass the buffy fans
  • swcalibound
Disaster...they will fail...Whedon is a god. Hardcore Buffy fans all over will be against this...including me!!!
  • Shorty
The new movie "The Vampire Slayer" will suck without the creator helping and without "Buffy" (Sarah Michielle Geller) and "Angel" (David). Well that's my opinion anyways. Hopefully the new creator can pull this out. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a good movie and t.v. series. This is a horrible idea bout making a new vampire slayer movie thats not the same. Also twilight is a ripoff of buffy. If it wasnt for buffy they wouldnt of come up with twilight in the first place. Which twilight SUCKS!!!!!

The original MOVIE is SHITTY! However the tv series was much better and i think the NEW should have some kinda of connection to the tv series and the previous characters! Like bringing in Buffy(Sarah M. Gellar), Willow(Alysson Hannigan), and Xander (Nicholas Brendon).

The original movie IS CRAP, but apparently Kuzui held onto the rights anyway, made a profit on the series because of it and now want's to try doing it AGAIN with the original CRAP formula (with a little help from the director of Twilight according to rumor)
I know for a fact that Gellar wouldn't agree to be involved and Hannigan is busy with How I met your Mother...Brendon is apparently doing nothing.
I'm just saying that Whedon should either direct or be Heavily consulted. It could be a great thing to tell another Slayer Story with some cameo's by original series actors (Tony Head and James Marsters for example) but to do a remake/revisionist/Twilight-esqe RIP-OFF is doing nothing but spitting in the face of all the fans of the series.

So stupid. I already know i don't want to see it, why would I when they aren't going to use the original cast or Joss Whedon? Everyone's right, it's going to fail ):
  • Shelby
I heard that they were remaking Buffy and got excited because I thought that Joss Whedon was on full envolvment and that it was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie and series remake with all the original characters but different actors.
But now that I just read this I am totally against it and dissapointed that someone would actually have such a moronic (a word I made up, Joss's Buffy lingo enspired me.) idea as to do this. I mean really? Do a Buffy remake without the original charaters and Joss and the team. I hope and pray that this does not go through and if it does I hope and prey that it will fail.
I a so frustrated and angery as a faithful BtVS fan.

Buffy - Joss Whedon = Twilight
  • Aysel
If Whedon isn't a part of this, I, as a BTVS and Angel fan will probably not watch it. and if they decide to completely leave the cannon of the show out, I definitely will not be seeing this.
  • when is the new buffy movie comming as there needs to be one.

It WILL suck. Big Hollywood producers that smell a buck but have never figured out this simple equation:It aint broke so DON'T try to fix it.
Don't get me wrong, I don't swear by everything that Joss does, say's or writes...I'm NO brown-coat by any means (hated firefly/Serenity and did you suffer through Aliens four?) But I will say this:
Buffy was always Joss's idea, it's a FACT that they wouldn't take his suggestions for the movie and it ended up blowing chunks. What worked?
The television series that's what! Who was in charge of the tv series? JOSS, and it rocked. My conclusion is this: NO JOSS=SUCK FEST(and not the good kind)

Personally more power to Kuzui. Please make something more powerful and less morbid than what was given by Joss. Actually, as a whole he was behind the idea sure, but way too many writers. The level of story arcs they had for this series needed to push this show onto a more 'Adult' related network. And, even then, the story arcs were atrocious. They didn't get it right...they twisted things to an extreme that you start to begin to wonder who the heck are these writers? Some sick and twisted themes where it focused on teens to adults. I mean Joss was thrilled with pairing a 15 going on 16 year old with a vampire over 240 years older than her...Getting technical he was nearly 30 when he was turned. I have mucho problemos with someone of this caliber writing and displaying this to the world...What does that say to the world???? The movie in the long run, though done rather poorly as it was of comedic humor was fine. Not Oscar worthy but a good B movie! If they do give the green light to go ahead with this movie...New Slayer. Forget Buffy. Although, if they do go the Buffy route...Skip Joss and company and take it to a whole different aspect.

I actually wouldn't mind another movie without Joss and even company because with a new writer it can be taken to depths that even Joss couldn't do as it being a movie. I will keep an open mind as the series though I watched it, pissed me off! I am still shaking my head with how these supposedly great writers made something so profound when I found it degrading and insulting. Disgusting springs to mind as well. What type of individual has a relationship with a child? I understand the normality's are different everywhere but it creeped me out and I'm a mother for crying out loud...I have to worry that this is the message being sent out to my daughter....Thank god I instill good values and teach her well when Television comes along and tries to screw it up! I won't let her watch this show until she is of a decent age where we can discuss what we have seen. God I still shake my head at the series, but the movie I still laugh at and leave with a good feeling of seeing it with my daughter. So they do another? I say do it but with caution and use someone different and bring it to a new level that no other vampire movie has ever gone to. Have a vampire movie go where it has never gone and that includes the ever popular Twilight. Just my two cents...and my daughter loved that movie. Bring it on Kuzui! You have my Fan support just nix on the Whedon writing idea!!!!!!

You really have no clue about what made Buffy the tv series work as apposed to what made the movie fail.
I would say you should let your kids watch Dawson re-runs if you are that concerned about their inability to discern fact from fiction.

Concerned Mom, I am concerned about your mind set. Stop thinking, you don't make sense.

    POR DIOSSSSS

NO PUEDEN HACER UNA PELICULA DE BUFFY SIN JOSS NI SARAH.

    ERROR ABSOLUTO!

Absolutely horrible idea. Buffy does not need a reboot.
  • Anti-Septic
I wasn't a big fan of Buffy, the show has way to much crying for me. I did however like Angel 100 times better.

I think the Buffy character has said everything it has needed too. Its time to realize she is not coming back. So bring on a new slayer, and this time make sure the girl can really fight... Sarah never impressed me at all. She always looked clumsy in fight scenes.

    Bring on the new slayer!
  • I thought everyone hated the original movie, so, why reboot it?
  • Anon
We can also make a Star Wars reboot. But without George Lucas. Oh and Vader will be Chewbacca's father, and Leia will be free to marry Luke and...

Not well thought out. Buffy season five was killer, Buffy season six was killed, Buffy movie that's 'rebooted' is just junk.
  • CyT
I can hear the executives minds ching chinging with cash and Dr Evil laughing at all the fans out there who will hate it.
  • Start renting the series if you have not seen it.
About a reboot. Horrible idea. This was one of the best genre shows ever. They can't top it and they are dumb to think they can. No Joss. No Deal.
  • JKW
Meh. Everyone is up in arms over this when it's pretty harmless...if Buffy is rebooted but the Buffy fanbase contingent hates it, how else would the potential franchise survive? It wasn't as if the Sarah Michelle Gellar vehicle was inaccessible to casual fans (like Star Trek) or in need of a reboot because it went out poorly (like Batman)...so what could a reboot possibly offer that would surpass what has already become a cultural success? If they figure that out for the reboot, congrats.
  • TheMarquis
What the what? Can't we just make a new vampire movie? Why do you cash in on a franchise that really isn't yours? Frustration abounds.
  • Don't be stupid, the fans can't 'ban' anything. Without Joss Whedon, they'll throw in enough faux-Twilight elements to keep Twilight fans coming in droves and it'll make enough money to spawn crappy sequels a la Underworld.

I don't have a problem with a new cast or even an entirely different take on canon - I don't think the original movie fits in very well with the series/comic canon anyway.

What I most definitely DO have a problem is not grabbing Joss Whedon and chaining him to this project. As somebody already mentioned, it's his wit that made the show fly. The characters and the story (when Whedon hit his stride) were spectacular. Yes, the dialogue was amazing as well. But Whedon showed that wasn't an essential element with "Hush."

So no, I don't think it's going to be an epic fail - unfortunately. I just think I'll watch the movie (and we all will) and sigh in disappointment at what could have been.
  • Scott Morrison
The first movie sucked because it was too campy. The series was excellent because it was darker, rose above campiness and had great character development and cast. So... the guy that made the movie sees the success of the series and decides he wants to make another movie with guess what... darkness, greater character development and without the creator or cast of the series.. I see an epic FAIL in the works here.
  • THOMAS!
WTF DO NOT DO THIS! YOU WILL RUIN EVERYTHING AND US FANS WILL BAN THE MOVIE!
  • Dani
I hate the Kuzuis, money leechers
  • Guy Smiley
This is gonna suck more than a black hole. Everyone attached to this project is going to seriously regret it. No matter how good the project is it will be compared unfavorably to Weedon's series. And, in the likely event that the movie is not all that good, its going to be an outright creative and financial disaster. The only plus side will be that Weedon will be able to point to the failure and do an "I told you so!".
  • WesleyLong
A buffy movie without Joss is like trying to sell a snickers bar without chocolate or caramel...its just nuts.....
  • jason B
this is as bad as mcg doing the spaced remake without any of the uk crew's involvement.
  • Sxx
This is totally ridiculous. Joss Whedon MADE Buffy what it was. Just let it go, this "franchise opportunity" is bs and something I WILL NOT contribute to.
  • Look at Luke Perry...what a douche. I can't believe Joss Whedon wouldn't be a part of this!? I hope he'll make some sort of contribution as a producer or something.
  • Ana
This is total b.s. A new Buffy movie keeping in tune with the way the series ended would be great especially if some of the old cast were in it. But to totally shy away from the series itself is going to kill the tasteful good note that BTVS ended with. Whedon made the series what it is...he took one of the shitiest movies ever made and turned it into not only 1 successful series but 2 successful series.
  • Branden
What the fuck? Whedon is man. This remake is going to suck major donkey balls!
  • No way this is a horrible idea and I hope it never makes headway.
  • ziggi
    HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
cant wait for the buffy protests.
theater lobbies vandalized with glitter graffiti.
  • Eric
Taking a Joss Whedon idea and not having him execute it himself= icky in the extreme. Take, for example, the sloppy first season of Dollhouse. Joss idea + execs with heads up asses that made him change the show to be sexy blah blah = bad, awkward storytelling with unlikeable characters.

I will not see this movie.
  • Why are they goddamned remaking and rebooting everything these days?
  • Seriously, focus on new ideas, this is horrible. They already rebooted Buffy with the TV series, we don't need a 3rd redo.
  • My husband and I are HUGE fans. We own all of Buffy on DVD. We'll boycott without Joss's involvement. It's his dialogue and characterization, not to mention willingness to take chances and change everything in a heartbeat, which makes Buffy special. No Joss = WRONG!
