What is Pixar’s Brave?

There’s an interesting word in a recent Coming Soon interview with Pixar’s Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera. One word. One surprising and so far unexplained word.

As well as discussion of Up and a potential sequel to Monsters Inc. the conversation turned to general work practice at the Pixar studio. While working on Up, did Docter have much involvement with the other in-development pictures? Here’s his answer:

Once in a while, we’re at these meetings where we all look at Toy Story 3 or Brave or whatever and we all give comments and notes, but that’s just like a day here or there.

What is this Brave?

Well, to be honest nobody really has much of an idea. Yet. But there is some speculation doing the rounds, and I have a hunch of my own.

One of the films we know Pixar to be developing at the moment is The Bear and the Bow. Could Brave be a new title for this film? It certainly seems to be a story about bravery… but I’m not buying into that yet. The Bear and the Bow is a great title and really captures the folkloric vibe that suits the story of that movie.

My own suspicion (though it is only a vague one and I definitely wouldn’t stack any chips on it yet) is that Brave is a new adaptation of Thomas M. Disch’s The Brave Little Toaster.

Already adapted into an animated film - and two sequels - the original novel was billed by the author as “a bedtime story for small appliances”. He set the novel up for an adaptation at Disney, though that never quite happened. Later, the deal shifted and Hyperion produced the film, though it was distributed by Disney in 1987.

That film had numerous Pixar links, though a few are admittedly tenuous. It was co-written by Joe Ranft, later a key story man for Pixar. It had a David Newman soundtrack - part of the family of composers that includes Pixar collaborators Randy and Thomas. Thirdly, John Lasseter himself wanted to adapt the film during his tenure at Disney. This would have been done using the same 3D-2D hybrid of CG backgrounds and hand-drawn characters of Lasseter’s infamous Where the Wild Things Are test.

But would Pixar really now mount another film about inanimate objects coming to life, after the Toy Stories and Cars? A 2006 CNN interview with John Lasseter suggests so. Here’s the man himself, recounting his interest in adapting the story at Disney:

A friend of mine had told me about a 40-page novella called The Brave Little Toaster, by Thomas Disch. I’ve always loved animating inanimate objects, and this story had a lot of that. Tom Willhite liked the idea, too, and got us the rights to the story so we could pitch it to the animation studio along with our test clip.

When it came time to show the idea, I remember the head of the studio had only one question: “How much is this going to cost?” We said about the same as a regular animated feature. He replied, “I’m only interested in computer animation if it saves money or saves time.” We found out later that others had poked holes in my idea before I had even pitched it.

This ultimately led to Lasseter’s employment being terminated at Disney, but also his forging the connections that made Pixar happen.

I’m thinking there’s a fair chance that The Brave Little Toaster might be coming back, even that there’s an outside chance of Lasseter himself directing. Or maybe he can’t stand the thought of that darn Toaster and the trouble it caused him. It might be a few months, or even years, until we find out. The Brave new frontier of appliance merchandising and Pixar-branded toasters may just be awaiting us.

i would love to see it, Pixar is amazing and i am dying for some more Brave Little Toaster. I mean, the classics will always be in our heart, but this could be a very interesting and neat experience! :3
Please for the love of God do this!!!!
  • on the gamestop.com page for the video game "UP" underneath is advertising a game called "Brave - A Warrior's Tale" http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ey5fNk2oL...
  • Hmm... Seems a bit weird that Pixar would buy the rights to another property... I always thought they liked to tell their own stories...

I have a friend who just was recently hired at the company. Apparently some people there have seen this article and think it's pretty funny, but he wouldn't tell me more than that.

My bet is that it's a production name for an upcoming film (I've heard Ratatouille referred to as "Rat", obviously Toy Story 3 is "TS3", etc), and he just accidentally referred to it by that. Pixar's amazingly tight-lipped about keeping secrets under wraps, so for him to make a slip like that about an unannounced film and not even catch himself... well, that seems unlikely.

My guess- either Bear and the Bow or John Carter.

erm... a bugs life isn't that a remake of the seven samaraii???? and then the magnificent seven???

I loved the movie as a kid. I think it would be cool for a re imagining with current technology. Will it be better than the original though? That is the question.

I wouldn't think Brave is the short before Toy Story 3,because the short Red's Dream would do be too great for a short to use before Toy Story 3 because of the similar plots.
  • I would be so onboard. I love the Brave Little Toaster (the animated film, never read the book). And I think Pixar would do really well with it. However, I think it's doubtful that they would do this.

Wow. Brendan makes what is probably the silliest, farthest-from-anything-that-would-ever-make-any-sense assumption and people are getting excited about it. Calm down. Either it's a short or they renamed The Bear and the Bow, which is a pretty bad name.
  • Sweet, that is probably the movie I most watched as a child. Love to see Pixar's version!

Pixar would never remake a film. Especially the Brave Little Toaster. They were too involved in the original. But Pixar is all about original storytelling.
  • That's very likely, yes.
  • I would guess that Brave is the production title they use for the project. I also thought it might be the Bear and the Bow, but could also be John Carter on Mars comming 2012 or Newt, 2011. I guess we just have to wait and see.

I really, really, hope it's John Carter of Mars

I bet your right it just a production title

i'm with davebaxter1989...Brave is probably the short before Toy Story 3...I highly doubt the will continue the Brave Little Toaster series...I could see Brave as a whole new Pixar movie...but my money is on the short before TS3
  • an adaptation, and one that has already been done once, seems very un-pixar...
  • ryan
If I had any money, I would be willing to bet it all against B. Connelly's prediction. I would be very very suprised if PIXAR did a Brave Little Toaster movie. I think it's more exiting to assume this BRAVE project is something entirly new.
  • DAMMIT! No! Now I need to know...oh god, if it's Brave Little Toaster, I'll melt.
  • UomoRagno
I too loved The Brave Little Toaster as a child but does it need to be done again? I know Hollywood is all about the remakes and a Pixar version would be beautiful but I didn't think we had reached the point where we would see animated movies rebooted.

I don't think it would be the Brave Little Toaster based on the fact that Toy Story 3's synposis about the toy's being abandoned by their old owner sounds too similar to the plot of The Brave Little Toaster.

This might sounds crazy, but maybe it's a film about Native Americans.
  • Jim
Isn't it too easy a title for Pixar? Like "Cars" is about actual cars?
  • No I thought the same thing about Native Americans.
  • Demented_Muppet
I wouldn't mind seeing a version of the Brave Little Toaster done right. One thing though - they'd have to keep it equally as charming/scary, and keep those wonderful charming/creepy songs!
  • If they brought the Brave Little Toaster back they would have to include the scary scenes from the first movie.

Like the clown, air conditioner going crazy, and that evil magnet.

Now that I think about it, that movie was pretty scary especially for a little kid but thats what made it awesome.
  • How about just the name for the short to accompany Toy Story 3? Which would place it in the same development cycle meaning it would be getting looked at at similer times to Toy Story 3 which is also mentioned.
  • Well, yes that is possible, of course. Even probable.
  • I think this might be the answer as well, there is no reason for Pete Docter to mention a movie that might come at least on 2013.
  • a new character perhaps in the toy story universe. woody is a cowboy and needs an indian or "brave" enemy?
  • I loved The Brave Little Toaster as a child, but I don't know if I'd wanna see a new one, even from P I X A R.
