Fanboys 2: Attack of the Clones?

fanboys

Dan Fogler tells moviehole that director Kyle Newman has an idea for a Fanboys sequel that would see the characters from the first film to go on mission to crash the set of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones in Australia.

“If he could come up with the right script, and get everyone together again, I would definitely do it.”

I‘ll admit it — Fanboys is not a good movie, but I kinda enjoyed it. One thing is certain, the film should have could have easily made 15 times more than it did at the box office, but studio tinkering, release date delays, horrible marketing and a small limited 44-theater release resulted in little more than $688,000 domestically.

And Fogler suggests that if “you want to do it right,” they would need to “do it independently”, which is another way of saying “no studio in their right mind would fund a sequel to such a huge box office failure. I doubt we’ll ever see a Fanboys 2, and I don’t think the idea of transplanting the adventure to Attack of the Clones-era Australia would do that much for the story.

  • Fogler is a tool. i still kind of want to catch this movie, but i'm not expecting much.
  • Why do crappy movies get sequels?
  • Hey if we're very lucky, they'll to make it, it will bomb and won't be able to afford return tickets. Then they will be Australia's problem.

  • Am I alone in actually enjoying this movie? Yes, it was not a good movie. But as a Star Wars fan, it was hilarious. And seeing the plethora of cameos (from Billy Dee Williams to Shatner to Ray Park Carrie Fisher to Kevin Smith and freaking Jason Mewes) in there was quite awesome for me. Not to mention that Danny McBride was pretty sweet in his 2 minutes of screentime. I know it wasn't a good movie but that sure as hell didn't stop me from laughing and enjoying every single minute of that film.

I'd be interested in a sequel.

I'm with Josh, I loved it, sure it wasn't a movie classic, but if you are a Star Wars fan, how could you not like it. If it played near me, I would have seen it in theaters. I would love a sequel.
  • I hear you, dude. If it had actually seen some screen time, this could have probably pulled in a decent amount of money just from the Star Wars fans. Maybe even from the Trekkies/Trekkers since the entire first 3/4 of the movie revolves around the Star Wars/Star Trek battles. But seriously, a 44 theater release? Living in Metro Detroit, there's that many theaters within a 15 mile radius of my house. Sadly I was in Marquette at school when it was released and it sure as hell didn't see the light of day up there.

I don't understand what all the negativity is either. This was one of the best road/buddy movies I've seen in a while. The plot has a lot more depth than you'd think, and the characters are all a lot of fun. The geek world and references therein are only as important as sports talk in a football movie or schmaltzy "dinner with the parents" scenes in a romantic comedy. Those things are just the backdrop, and hardly stand as criteria for why a movie is or isn't good. This was a good movie, and the studio did everyone a disservice by shafting its release. Things gonna pick up on DVD like it's no one's business and give The Weinstein Company plenty chance to regret their posturing attitude (I mean really? In the comic book movie era? did they really think no nerds were gonna go see this movie? Do they just not pay attention?).

An attack of the Clones sequel though? I don't wanna post any spoilers, but the crux of Fanboy's plot is a pretty stand alone concept. I can't see a sequel possibly being as good as the first.
  • I agree, this film was pretty good. Fogler was awesome in it, and seeing a sequel really wouldnt be that bad.

I also agree that the marketing for this film really messed things up. I only knew about this film from coming to this site, so Peter i think you helped in the sales of this dvd, or at least the helping of the downloads.

you are not alone...i would LOVE to see a sequel. but with the rating game and hollywood i doubt it will happen. :/
  • So we can expect this by 2016?
  • If it starts filming next year, probably...
  • Dan Fogler: And the Quest for Another Job, Because He Sucks, and Can Suck It.
  • Meh. Fanboys was decent at best, not boring, but kind of disappointing. I am sure the movie will pick up a fan base on DVD, so I wouldn't be surprised if this happens in the coming years.
  • the problem here is that..it's okay to make one movie about it. Then a sequel is just doing the samething.

Also, it takes away the fun from the first film. The script was written before The Phantom Menace came out, so I'm okay with that. But if there's a Fanboys 2, it's different the perception of the Prequels by some are different. Let's face it: they are not as acclaimed as the originals. Because of that, the nostalgia factor won't kick in.
  • On paper, Fanboys sounded awesome. In execution, it's terrible. I don't want to see a sequel.
  • Smash
A sequel? They barely managed to find enough jokes for the first one.
  • This movie sucked first time around, why the fuck would they make a sequel?

I was really sad too, I love all of the celebrities they had in the movie, but it still managed to lose in my book. Maybe it would have helped if I wasn't cooking fried chicken while tryin to watch thiz shizzz.

i want to see this movie more than i want anything else in the world right now. even if its bad. i have waited a long time for it
    sequel has a great idea.
  • Wait, let me get this straight. You are begging for a sequel before you even see the first one? Coming from someone who actually does want a sequel after seeing the first one... that is just fucked up.
  • Goobity
Attack of the Clones? Really? Not interested.
A better idea would be to go back to 1979 and have a new cast trying to get under the radar, and onto the set of Blue Harvest. If you want to make a genuine fan film, that is.
  • And with any luck, we'll see it in 5 - 10 years with fewer jokes and storylines than were originally promised. This is like the Duke Nukem of fan films.

I thought this movie was very good considering where it lies in niche film land. I enjoyed it more than Star Wars Ep II "The Love Story," I guess that doesn't say too much. Oh Well. Fanboys is till a very good, and highly under appreciated film.
  • the thing is this concept cant work because after seeing the Phantom, why would they want to see Clones?
  • I wanted to see this when they first started talking about it close to 3 or 4 years ago. but I really have no interest in it now.
    let alone a sequel.
if they did do it. an it was already in production, it would take until about 2016
  • Fangoys was a mess of a movie when it came to its release and delays and everything.

The actual movie as a whole I find to be a guilty pleasure

What I don't get is how a movie like "Balls of Fury" gets national screen time and this movie doesn't. I was excited for the September 19th release, then the october 31st release, then to find out that it would be a winter release, then a summer release, then straight to DVD release. What a load of shit. I actually got to screen the movie in Bloomington, IN and the house was packed. Mostly star wars fans who all enjoyed the quick references. I also enjoyed the film. Thought it was funny, but to be a bit of a downer due to the nature of the trip (don't want to spoil). Plus Kristen Bell is gorgeous in the Leah slave motif. Mmmmhmmm..

Ugh, no. I'm a Star Wars fan and I found the first film incredibly embarrassing.

Fanboys 2 - seriously? Fanboys (1!) film crashed and burned so badly smoke is still rising from the charred debris. Just. Let. It. Go.

Fanboys was a decent Netflix rental. A straight to DVD sequel would probably suffice, though it would be a stretch because the premise is so gimmicky.
  • I liked Fanboys...sure it wasn't a great movie, or even a good movie..but as a Star Wars fan I had a hard time not enjoying it. I'd watch a sequel
  • Peter
Wasn't the release shuffling suffering enough? They want to make another? christ.
  • bglooney
REALLY not needed in my opinion. I was practically raised on Star Wars, and I felt the first had just enough jokes for half a film. This would be buttering bread with a bare knife.
  • I honestly enjoyed fanboys, I think we need more nerd humor in movies. Although it didn't do it perfectly and most jokes fall flat I still thought it was a step in the right direction.

The movie is not the disaster many people say it is. What were you expecting?. Something like The Godfather II. C'mon guys, it's a comedy, a parody. I do remember all the expectations that everybody had for Episode I. And, at the end some of us ended a little dissapointed with the film, and overall with the entire prequel trilogy. I,m 34 years old now, when Episode I came out I was 24, and I still remember the long lines at the cinemas!!!, all the hype was real. I waited for many, many, many years to experience the Star Wars logo in the big screen again (since Return of the Jedi in 1983!!!). Episode I was like the last thing before grow up for my generation!!!
  • I HOPE THEY DO THIS>>I LOVE HUTCH, BOTTLER, LINUS, ZOEY AND WINDOWS!
