Early Buzz: Terminator Salvation

t4-12small

The first official reviews of McG’s Terminator Salvation have hit over the weekend in the Hollywood trade newspapers and a college website. Variety and College Times say it’s a fun summer action film (not transcendent of the first two films, obviously), but The Hollywood Reporter borderline HATED it. I’ve included spoiler free excerpts from the three reviews after the jump.

Variety: “[McG] exhibits an unexpected flair for the dreadful, abrupt and awesome.” … “Darker, grimmer and more stylistically single-minded than its two relatively giddy predecessors, “Terminator Salvation” boasts the kind of singular vision that distinguished the James Cameron original, the full-throttle kinetics of “Speed” and an old-fashioned regard for human (and humanoid) heroics.” … “McG’s direction is always intelligent.” … “The script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris occasionally goes off the rails.”

The Hollywood Reporter: “The machines rise to the occasion. Too bad the dramatic element’s just as robotic.” … “there’s little sign of life where the flatly executed human component is concerned.” … “It’s just not the same without the Governator.”

College Times: “Terminator: Salvation is still a good entry and a marked improvement over its third predecessor that may not exactly set the sci-fi genre ablaze with its effects or plot line but progresses the saga in an interesting direction with good action to boot.” …. “definitely big and spectacular as an action sci-fi movie, yet it lacks the punch and complete terror that came with the first two entries.” …  “a competent, summer action movie that, much like all good reboots, pleases the fan base while attracting a wider audience.  It does not exactly innovate the Terminator name beyond what is already accomplished as it relies on series old themes and not exactly helped by the dearth of character development for most of the characters, some odd exposition work, lack of cohesive editing, and odd ending sequence, but it does bring up some interesting ideas about where the series could go.” …  “*** out of *****”

Looking forward to it, but no I don't expect it to surpass Star Trek, one great May movie a year is all I ask.

But I definitely think it will be kick ass and be super entertaining, but this is McG, the guy has matured sure, but he's still got lots to learn, and I expect a bit of cheese and never expected it to touch the greatness of Camerons movies. I think McG will improve quite significantly with Terminator 5 if he's behind that one too. There's lots to learn.

But, still I'll wait to see it and make my own decision, but the reviews spelled out what I was expecting for the most part. Still hella excited!
  • While I enjoyed Star Trek a lot, it wasn't be all/end all this summer for me as it was for some (My bet is on TF2), I still think this is going to be great. As you said, he seemed to really handle this well and can't wait to see where it goes from here. Now if only we could get a decent bluray release of T2 like the JP version.
  • McG should go back to directing Offspring videos.
  • early buzz is not so good and i must say it really bothers me. i so want this movie to not disappoint.
  • I also asked the same of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the remake of Day The Earth Stood Still. McG better not make me cry!
  • I knew origins would disappoint because it's Fox but not as bad as day the earth stood still.

Fox did both Wolverine and Earth Stood Still so thats why they sucked. This wont be as bad as those, from what I've heard it's good but not anything great.
  • filmkid
Fox also did Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and Dragonball they also sucks
  • Oh I didn't know fox did the day the earth stood still. No wonder. They are the worst movie studio out. I absolutely despise them.

I agree that Fox is the worst studio out there. While I had high hopes for The Day the Earth Stood Still, after seeing it I wanted to gouge my eyes out. Watching previews for Street Fighter helped me realize that X-men and Dragonball would suck. However, I have a friend who went to the premiere and said that the movie was all around enjoyable except for the ending. He even went as far as saying that the ending they were previously thinking about, the one that got leaked where Marcus Wright takes over for John Conner, would have been better than the one they are using. I hope I am not disappointed.
  • this post should be sticky'd to the top of the page all week.
  • This post should be stickied to the back of the page all week.

what you people complaining about this was never gonna top t1 or t2 everyone says it is 100 times better than t3 and that is enough to satisfy me
  • That's what I was expecting. A decent enough movie, not mind blowing though... but with potential for a great sequel
  • I hope its better then the third one.
  • Glad I lowered my expectations. I'm still going to see this movie and its good to see that its better than T3 to some but the Hollywood Reporters review seemed to dislike (on the borderline of hate) TS for the most part.

I'll just keep my lowered expectations. The odd editing was apparent from the clips and it kind of sucks knowing that the characters are barley developed.
  • razor
idk i think you already know the core characters so they just need to flesh out new ones
  • dannyboy
if its better then T3 thats alright no way Terminator Salvation will be better then T1 and T2. no one expect it to be better then T1 and T2 but if its better then T3 we will be alright for that
  • at the very least it sounds like it is going to be good enough to build on in future movies...
  • T-1000
Did anybody actually read the Hollywood Reporter review in its entirety? That was a mixed review through and through...I wouldn't say they hated it at all. There were parts they liked and parts they disliked.
  • this is my most anticipated movie of the summer and now these reviews are letting me down. ugh.
  • I don't understand why everyone is looking at two positive reviews and one negative review as a let down. Anyone who was expecting this movie to be better than the first two films in the series had unrealistic expectations. All three reviews seem to indicate that this one is better than the third film, and that's good enough for me.
  • "All three reviews seem to indicate that this one is better than the third film, and that's good enough for me. "

No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise. Why shouldn't the film aspire to be greater than the first instead of just better than the third?
  • Way to throw in a Rorschach quote for value but his comment wasn't about compromise. No ones saying it isn't aspiring to that level, just that its nearly inconceivable for Salvation to be looked with the same regard as the first 2. I'll be perfectly happy and fulfilled if this film can make up for the problems the 3rd one brought to the table as well as set up the franchise again for even better films, which is what these reviews seem to be saying.

"All three reviews seem to indicate that this one is better than the third film, and that's good enough for me. "

    So you're happy with mediocrity?

I don't see anything wrong with hoping for better when we see what a talented group can do with this intellectual property.

Unfortunately they recycled the writers from T3 and brought in a director who is in over his head.

What's so wrong with the third film? It has a 77% positive rating on Rottentomatoes. NO, its not as good as one and two, what could be. James Cameron is one of as kind, but its still a solid film in the Terminator canon. At least I think so.

"Did anybody actually read the Hollywood Reporter review in its entirety? That was a mixed review through and through...I wouldn't say they hated it at all. There were parts they liked and parts they disliked."

Yes, I read the HR in FULL. They liked the lensing and the production design, however didn't like the ACTUAL FILM. Praising tech credits does not equal praising the film itself. Sorry to burst your bubble, it's negative.

Variety was positive, HR is negative. 50/50.
  • T-1000
^They also seemed to have liked the action.

But anyway, Peter is right in saying that anyone who was expecting this to be something like T1 or T2 was in for a disappointment.

All I want from TS is a good film that is better than T3, advances the saga in a decent, and has the potential to be expanded and improved upon in future films. Sorta like how X2 built on X1 (let's hope this new trilogy doesn't fall into the X3 trap).
  • My friend who got an advanced screening said that Worthington was the only thing great about this movie.
  • Chuck is pretty good.
  • MARKUS
Well nothing could be as bad as T3. I for one feel the film has more a chance without Arnold's cheesy delivery. That said, if it's lacking dramatic cohesion and the characters are dull the general media will rip it a new one.

After Dark Knight and now Star Trek I don't guess reviewers are going to put up with all action, zero humanity film.
  • matt
Except the star trek film was pretty devoid of "humanity" as well...
  • Totally agree. I really didn't like T3 at all--the big action set piece on the highway was nice, and I was pleasantly surprised by the sorta-downbeat ending, but everything else was just awful. My hopes for Salvation keep sinking.

Of course, that won't stop me from seeing it on opening day. It's like a girlfriend you know is destroying your life but you keep going back.
  • It's the internet, Peter. Folks around here are apocalyptically fickle...
  • T-fan
as cheesy as his previous films were, i feel sorry for McG because i think he really tried to be faithful to the mythology and seemed genuinely enthusiastic in interviews so i hope it does as well as at least he hopes it to do.

Alot of armchair critics have already condemned this film for trivial reasons so hopefully professional critics can be more objective
  • T3 gets a bad rap, but hey, it's a decent action flick with a great last 20 minutes.
  • alwayssts
Glad to see one review mentioning how 'odd' the ending is. It sure sounds like it was madly improvised at the last minute during reshoots and not by the original (T3/T4) writers. If I had to pick, the first leaked ending sounds (strangely) the least goofy with the most room to explore in future installments. The other two either completely ruin the canon, or, as it appears to stand, go beyond (even terminator) realism while destroying canon. (Arnie's speech in T3 + o-neg terminator?).

Sounds like a whole lot of fun for a general audience popcorn flick, but massive lose for the overall story and longtime fans.

I'd say I'd wait for context, but I really don't expect there to be context.
  • Palmer
It's just 1 negative review so far. Don't care for it, I'll still see it even if it gets more negative reviews.
  • AASDFG
Even including the one bad review, one thing is universal: The action is going to be great and the terminators are going to kick ass. In my opinion, that's just fine.
  • Agreed. All this movie needs to do is set the ship straight, not reinvent it.
  • I think this would be the "Batman Begins" of the franchise.
  • Hmm, I expected it to garner a little more praise than what I'm getting, which is upsetting. I'm not too hyped for Salvation, but out of the summer movies, it was my second most desired after Star Trek. I think the effects both practical and cgi look amazing, from what I've seen in the trailers. I felt a sense of terror the first time I viewed the 1st trailer and saw the T-600 with those glaring red eyes, upsetting to hear the terror isn't there, but I guess I will have to make my own judgments.
  • Josh
The variety review said it was better than T2 and T3.
  • jason B
no fucking way?! did they really say it was better than t2?!
  • jason B
nevermind, i read the article, that's not what they said.
  • jason B
i was thinking the same thing: glad i lowered my expectations, so i can just go enjoy a fun summer flick. though i will say its too bad we couldn't have gotten a poignant & deep commentary on oh, call it 'life', like the 1st 2 were. but like you said, with our expectations lowered, maybe we'll be able to at least get our moneys worth.

and again, i agree with you that the lack of character development will be very disapointing,
  • Pissed off
District 9 will rule this summer.
  • Spence_Mgence
I would love to agree but I don't think that it is getting as much attention as needed. While I am hopeful that it will be, I think Star Trek or Terminator will be the summer movies to beat. I don't think that Terminator will necessarily be amazing, but it is getting enough attention to make a lot of people flock to it. I think that since so many people are familiar with the Terminator franchise that it will earn a good amount of money. I am hoping this is true for Where the Wild Things Are, since that is also a story that most people know about so it will be seen.
  • jason B
IMO, transformers & especially harry potter, will be much better films than T4& trek. i think those will be the summer films to beat.
  • Jordan
it's only 3 reviews, people who are calling it a disappointment because a critic isn't crazy about it is stupid as hell. go see it, and see for yourself. and I hate to break it to those who adore it, t1 is not only dated, but after it's first 40 minutes is pretty average at best.
