Star Trek behind the scenes
MTV got a chance to grill Star Trek director JJ Abrams about what we could expect in the inevitable sequel. Of course, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have not yet started on the announced sequel, so anything at this point is just speculation. But Abrams admits that the alternative universe timeline allows them to deviate from Trek canon.

When I polled the slashfilm followers on Twitter a week ago, the three most popular ideas were: The Original Crew vs. The Borg, the return of William Shatner and of course, KHANNNN!!!! The last two pose a big problem. Shatner’s Kirk died on in the climax of the 1994 film Star Trek: Generations.

I argued in the video blog last week that the alternative timeline means that Kirk’s death didn’t happen, at least not in the way it occurred in Generations, and that the Star Fleet Captain could return in a sequel, possibly in search for Elder Spock.

And Abrams tells MTV that the new timeline could allow for the return of Shatner: “The point of creating this independent timeline is to not have the restrictions we had coming into this one. And one of those restrictions was that Kirk was dead.”

As for Khan, many people believe that since Kirk never stranded him on Ceti Alpha V, the character would no longer be the same villain we saw in Star Trek 2. But Abrams argues that it is still possible to feature Khan as the villain in the Trek sequels: “[Khan and Kirk] exist — and while their history may not be exactly as people are familiar with, I would argue that a person’s character is what it is. Certain people are destined to cross paths and come together, and Khan is out there … even if he doesn’t have the same issues.”

Personally, I would like to see a story we’ve never seen before, and not just a remake or reinvention of the original Trek films. The alternative timeline might allow for both, but that doesn’t mean that the sequel should present a story we’ve already experienced before.

    Javier Bardeem = KHAN

Oooh, a new Star Trek where an old character comes back in time!

    Wait... fuck that.

I'm rooting for Borg, or something completely new.
  • Just saw First Contact, the Borg would be sweet.
  • Slogan
I recon a Borg story line would be the next thing to do! Dont want them rehashing the same stuff over and over again!
  • MasterCobra
    No shit bro!
  • MasterCobra
fuking hell they censor shit now!
  • no, no, no. it's too soon to be revisiting anything from the original timeline. do something original instead.
  • mangos
    something new please.
  • no, no, no. it's too soon to be revisiting anything from the original timeline. do something original instead. although, bardem as khan would be cool... but not in the next film.
  • they should leave time travel alone for the next one i think, it's one thing to rehash an old star trek movie, it's another to rehash the one you just made

but with lindelof more involved than he was in the previous production we may have something even more special in store
  • Peter
They said recently that they wouldn't do anything more with time travel in the sequel. It was merely to set up this alternate universe.
  • Brice Gilbert
I've been saying this forever, but yeah if Lendelof is involved more with the script I expect an even better movie.

Oh and why would an old Kirk come back in time to find old Spock? That is not how this time travel works. That alternate timeline where Kirk is dead still exists. If Kirk came back he would be either from this new timeline or some other random one (if they exist). And in coming back he would not be looking for the old Spock from the dead Kirk timeline because Spock didn't leave in this new timeline!
  • sciretta wasn't thinking fourth dimensionally :D
  • If you read my explanation on the video blog page, you will see I have a perfect explanation of why it would work.
  • Nicely put.
  • I could care less if it's new or not... just bring me something cool, and there's no debating how goddamn cool Khan is.

    So, to put it simply...

    KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
  • whatever they do, just no more time travel.
they should use new science fiction plot devices in every movie, like the show
  • fex
    WORD!

  • logical: new worlds, new civilizations

I agree. Take it from NBC's Heroes- time travel can suck the life out of it.
  • I agree with Samir. No more time travel. No one else from Timeline Prime. Just deal with whats in this new timeline. Romulans, Andorians, Klingons, heck, even Borg. If I see Shatner, they will have lost me for good as a viewer and a fan.
Do something new. They could even introduce a new species that we have never seen before. Someone who is taking the destruction of Vulcan as a sign of Federation weakness and trying to make a move on the Federation.
  • A new villian would be best. Why rehash the past.

This new start reminds me of Marvels Ultimate series... which over time became a slave of the following the path of the original universe with a convoluted history all it's own. Hopefully Star Trek doesn't follow a similar path.

A new alien race would be great.

Khan is boring anyway. Oh boy he's marooned... big deal.
  • dsmith4geo
Actually, at this point in Star Trek history, Khan is still frozen (remember, the movie is supposed to take place BEFORE the original series, where Khan is still a ice cube floating in space). So unless the story is them finding Khan all over again, the next movies will have no Khan. How about showing the first meeting with the Gorn - lots of great story tracks they could take there.
  • Name
meeting the gorn, thats the best idea I've heard here for sure.
  • Zach
I'm for a Klingon v. Federation all out war. That's just me.
  • please no shatner
  • If Shatner is in it, it's probably a time travel story, and i don't want that. If they can do it with out time travel again then that might not be that bad.
  • Palmer
It's just too soon for Khan. Let them continue on their journey without bringing in the old villains.
  • Grande
How about something new? What a crazy idea!

Leave the past alone, and create something original. Crazy, I know.
  • maracle
what about a Shatner cameo not as Kirk? i dont see a problem with that
  • how about bring in howard stern announcer.... GEORGE takei!!! oh my!!!!!!!!!
  • haha, nice.
  • Bring on the Klingons.
  • Why not have Christopher Lloyd again?
    And add Michael J Fox.
Let's have the Doc and Marty join the fleet. (y)
  • I say bring on the Biff....he was sweet in Wing Commander video game movies.
  • My vote is no Khan, no Borg. We need some really ruthless Klingons. They got too watered down in the 90's shows. Lets get some utterly merciless Klingons..... as said earlier: as the Federation is reeling from Vulcan's destruction (which was dumb but whatever) Commander Kang leads the invasion of the Federation. No cloaking yet...sheer murderous, calculated and phaser-powered badass-ery. Get some Dominion Wars style epic battles that I am sure Abrams can specialize in (if not called up Mr. Bay). If this series is going to be all explosion and lens flares...lets at least have some good battles. Oh and people need to die and Kirk has to make some tough captaining decisions (like his dad did) and not get all pussy about it.....
And ridges are a must...but doesn't have to be the same type of ridges.
Get someone badass and ruthless to play Kang...none of that leaping and moping-about rubbish that Nero did....a real motivated warrior who is gonna take it to the Federation...I nominate Gerald Butler...but there are tons that will do.
  • John
I beg them to leave Khan alone. Star Trek II is classic, so let it be. Why would they reboot this series only to rehash Khan anyway? I hope they create a new villain instead. Surely Kirk can piss off more than just one man named Khan.
  • I want Abe Lincoln -- best Star Trek character ever.

Leave Kahn out of it for now. a William Shatner cameo as anyone but Kirk would be pretty distracting from the movie. maybe if he does a Stan Lee style one where he just does something cool, but that could play with the story line with people being like "why did future Kirk do that?!"
  • Kirk & Crew Vs. Borg cube that's heading through the Neutral Zone because of the signal from the Borg via the hijacked freighter that was destroyed by the NX-01 circa ENT: Regeneration.
  • Brad
PLEASE NO KHAN! DO SOMETHING NEW!
  • Mike
They created a wonderful and fresh start with this flick, why go back and revisit things that are already perfect? We already have Space Seed and The Wrath of Khan - we don't need a remake when there a thousands of ideas and adventures and possibilities now.
  • freemachine
Khan - Montelban = Heresy. Abrams, you will be burned alive at the stake if you try this!
  • Solid
Star Trek Babies 2 needs some Picard to mature things abitty bit. Seriously, I want star trek to go back to being way too smart for my dumb ass to understand it.
  • Solid
Alright fine, go and give me a minus. But star trek used to aim higher and all crazy internet people know it!
  • Well with this whole new star trek reboot being a alternate reality to the original I could see them doing the whole Kahn thing and giving it a twist.

Hell they could have Star Trek 2 introduce Kahn and then Star Trek 3 mainly be about Kahn.
  • 790
If Abrams doesn't do something new and original he's a total hack.
  • How about going where no one has gone before?
