Chris Hemsworth is Thor

chris hemsworth thor

Chris Hemsworth has been cast as the title character in Kenneth Branagh’s big screen adaptation of Marvel’s Thor. Hemsworth will also be playing the mythic comic book character in the Summer 2012 superhero team-up film The Avengers.

You might be wondering, “Who the hell is Chris Hemsworth?” While you might not recognize his name, you saw him on the big screen last weekend in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek as George Kirk. Some of my critic friends had a big problem with Hemsworth’s performance in the opening sequence, but I did not.

Nikki Finke reports that Marvel and Branagh made the final decision earlier today after reviewing Hemsworth’s test footage, which was described as “Oh my god.” Chris is currently in production on the Joss Whedon-written Drew Goddard-directed horror film The Cabin in the Woods. The Australian actor was also just cast as the lead role in MGM’s Red Dawn remake last week.

He’s a virtual unknown in the United States, but he was a star on a successful television series back in Oz (171 episodes of Home and Away) and was on the 2006 Australian version of Dancing with the Stars.

Written by Mark Protosevich, the story has been described as being “like a superhero origin story, but not one about a human gaining super powers, but of a god realizing his true potential. It’s the story of an Old Testament god who becomes a New Testament god”.

Marvel will self-finance the production, and the film will be distributed by Paramount Pictures. Marvel has announced a June 17th 2011 release date for the film.

Discuss: What do you think of Hemsworth as Thor?

  • Given that his terrible performance stood out even more the second time watching Trek, there goes any bit of excitement I had for Thor...
  • yea devindra, like marvel movies are known for impeccable acting.
  • MasterCobra
Fuk u sideways c|_|nt! ... u knw jack sh1t abt acting dude ... go back to your hole and play with yourself!
  • I see we've found the president of the Chris Hemsworth fan club ;)
  • Steve
WoW!! That's pretty harsh coming from a fucking nerd who no doubt was thrilled when G.I.Joe came out...make any money from those dolls ya prick...? How many movies have you been in(not including guy on guy porn)? ANd then...THEN call someone a cunt...Whoa! I wish I knew you, I really do. I would MAKE you one...a cunt I mean...Fuck you!
  • jason B
it's quite naive of you to dismiss a new actor based off of a 3 1/2 minute performance (which i found no problem with at all - in fact, what specifically did he do that turned you off?). consider hayden christenson's role in star wars compared to shattered glass: absolute proof the kid can act. besides, if you were truly bothered by his turn in trek, then equal -if not all - blame should be placed on jj.

what should really worry you about thor, is the level of marvel's involvement. after the wolverine origins abortion, and several other insane moves they have made with their film division, i feel they could do the most harm.

with branagh at the helm, i feel good about this one, let's just hope for a solid script. a LOTR meets the superhero/comic genre would be a breath of newness into the very repetitive formula we are seeing lately.
  • Branagh is good, but given that the only thing I've seen him in featured a not so great performance, how am I supposed to get excited by this actor? Rewatch the opening scene at some point, he does not exude ANY of the emotions one would expect of a man put in his position.
  • Saw Star Trek twice and this "bad performance" is new to me. I mean, seriously, how can you look at the campy dialogue and acting throughout Star Trek and call that the "one" bad performance in the flick? I enjoyed ST both times by the way.

Looking forward to Thor though. I'm still curious how it will all Mesh with the realism presented in Iron Man, and the realism through Science presented in the Hulk. I want the Avengers flick!
  • God, he was fine in star trek stop the bitching. If Branagh has one area of expertise it's acting, he would not pick a terrible actor for his lead role.
  • sean coates
iam with u dude .. terrible lol what do u know devindra
  • I agree. I thought he was perfectly fine in such a small role. I missed the bad performance. Also you're right about old Ken. He's like a proper actor innit.

    Bad Devindra. Very bad.
  • Here you have truly found the crux of the matter. The important issue here is that KB is the man. Period. ;)
  • Steve
Maybe you should have directed it...oh wait, your probably a nobody like everyone else on here with an asshole...I mean opinion.
  • GregoryV
Thor... wow, so Marvel is seriously going to make this into a film. I can't wait for the DVD.
  • Not a bad idea. It seems like people are accepting more "unknows" these days. Perfect example: Chris Pine, cast of Watchmen, etc.
  • same with Sam Worthington....I like this sort of shake up so that it's not the same 10 actors playing the same roles over and over...
  • brokenenglish
thor is wack , bring on iron man 2 bow
  • Travis McGee
I wonder if they had to cast this sooner than Cap because Thor will be making his debut in Iron Man 2?

I also wonder if Cap will be pushed back again. No real announcements have been made lately and it comes out like a months after Thor.
  • not excited or deterred with this news. He wasnt great in Trek but oh well.
  • filmkid
it seems like the unknown actors are taking over hollywood
  • ZXCVV
I kind of liked this guy in Star Trek. I don't know, I mean seriously, how good of an actor do you really be to play THOR. I bet he has like three lines in the whole fucking movie. (and all of them are three words or less)
  • three lines in an entire movie about him?
  • I don't think you know the character very well. Thor takes three sentences to say, "I'm gonna take a dump." Hell, he'll say "Verily" when no one's even talking to him.
  • ZXCVV
Settle down. It was a joke. I know he'll have more than three lines. I just don't think they hired this guy to be smart thor. I think they hired him to be sexy, intense thor, and I think that's what we can expect.
  • milkshake
    so you think hes sexy?
  • Macgyver
    Solkaggerasdasdasd!!!!
  • On the other hand, I'm happy we have an unknown as the star of one these big budget action movies. How many times have we complained that a serious Persian actor didn't get the role in Prince of Persia or were pissed off that fraking Topher Grace was Venom or that Ben Affleck was Dare Devil? Kudos Marvel.

So this makes me a little happier for the guy and he's got the look. Not to mention, like him in Star Trek or not, it's freaking Kenneth Branagh approving this choice. Dude knows good acting. I'm gonna trust him.

    +1 for Thor
  • Justin Craig
Topher Grace as Venom still causes a little vomit to build up in my mouth after all these years.
  • Travis McGee
He might of been a better Captain America...
  • that's actually a good call
  • hartman27
nope, that would be Nathan Fillion...make this happen Hollywood Gods...
  • hartman27
I"m a fraken idiot...that last comment should be for the Green Lantern post farther down.
  • Travis McGee
Don't get me wrong. I'm a big Nathan Fillion fan myself, but he shouldn't be Green Lantern. He is to old. For Green Lantern they need to cast someone in their mid to late twenties.
I would like to see an Uncharted movie staring Nathan Fillion though. The character in the game is based on his likeness and it's his voice too...
  • Cmelendez
lol drake from uncharted was made to look like one of the owners from naughty dog the devs who made the game... second Nolan North does the voice of drake...
  • After seeing Star Trek a few times I think he has the look and can play it off, My biggest concern is how the story will be. I think Thor is cool, but if he's written badly he's camp.

    As always, We'll see.
  • Palmer
I'm impartial. Only saw him in Star Trek so I can't really say if he's good or bad.
  • mangokiwis
i actually really dug him in Trek and was wondering who he was. for a sec i just saw "Chris cast as Thor" and thought "NO NOT CHRIS PINE". i wonder if WB will counter this with that other Kirk being cast in Green Lantern. prob not. but hopefully THAT casting comes soon too.
  • jason B
its beyond naive of you to dismiss an actors talent based on one performance. consider hayden christenson's role in the star wars films compared to 'shattered glass': absolute proof that the kid can act when guided by a good script & most importantly a good director. if you were that bothered by his performance in star trek, then jj should be one of - if not - the first people to blame...though i think his total 3.5 minutes of screentime were just fine.

the thing that should worry you the most about the upcoming thor film, should be the level of marvel's involvement, especially in the wake of the 'wolverine' disaster, among many other shockingly bad calls they have made with their new film division.

i have faith in bragnagh (sp?), and most importantly i hope they turn in a solid script. if this could be LOTR meets the superhero/comic book genre, what a fun & (finally) unique comic book film we could get.
  • mangokiwis
    "dug" means i liked him.
  • c t c h e r
As I watched him in Star Trek, all i could think was: He should play Hal Jordan IF they made the movie based on Darwyn Cooke's The New Frontier.
  • ziggi
    hair is too short.
  • nelson
Sam Worthington would be a better Lantern
  • mangos
i don't Worthington can pull off the humor or charisma needed Hal Jordan
  • Grant
I think that's a great casting choice. I liked him a lot in Star Trek. :) Looking forward to Thor now!
  • Caitlin
    Okay, fine, whatever.

How about an announcement for who will be playing Cap already? Get on it Marvel!
  • did you know you guys are pretty much the first news website to report this?

search on google news for this, and you are the first website to have posted this.

    good job
    be proud of yourselves
  • CoreyChops
I can live with this, would have been a better Cap.
  • mee
i agree with your comment. he'd make a great cap.
  • seems small to play Thor. I was hoping the Alexander Skarsgård rumor was true, wait is he playing Thor or Donald Blake?
  • bacon
wasn't it said that Donald Blake doesn't show up until the very end?
