At least in terms of teen appeal, Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights was the Twilight of its day… but seeing as that was way back in 1847, when teens were a little different and less OMG!OMG!, you shouldn’t be put off the latest film adaptation just yet. The Hollywood Reporter tell us that this new adaptation is to star Bond’s oil-slicked Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton (also in the upcoming Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans) and Gossip boy Ed Westwick. As a result, what will set this version apart from any of the others, including the Oscar-winning 1939 film starring Laurence Olivier, is that at 23 and 21, respectively, its stars are pretty much the same age as their characters.

This Heights is to be directed by Peter Webber, previously responsible for Girl with a Pearl Earring and the young Hannibal movie though, earlier on, John Mayberry was set to direct with Michael Fassbender attached. Natalie Portman had also been attached to the project for quite a while before dropping out, being replaced with Abbie Cornish who then dropped out herself. I’m not so sure that’s not a bad thing. I was very much impressed by Arterton’s turn in last year’s Tess of the Durbervilles, yet another 18th century period period piece, so I think she’s more than up to a bit of Bronte.

The shadow of Wuthering Heights falls over quite a stretch of modern pop culture. The story gets more than a few mentions in Twilight, which probably sets up a decent sized audience of Meyersmaniacs. I’d definitely recommend listening to Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights, written and recorded when Bush was at the tender of age of just 16 herself. Can you still be considered a prodigy at 16? If so, she was.

The original novel has a rather modern-seeming structure, with oodles of flashbacks and two separate and distinct narrators. There’s also a strong sense of the uncanny, perhaps even the supernatural, and a lot of genuine (i.e. Not Hot Topic) gothic style. Will we get a faithful reproduction of this on the cinema screen at last?

This may be a shock - but Ed Westwick kicks ass. This could be great! Even on the show Gossip Girl (which loves to luxuriate in literary references - one episode did a fantastic simultaneous twist of Edith Wharton and Chekhov's "The Seagull") Ed does extraordinary work. His character is so close to Heathcliff anyway, it should be marvelous. I now cannot wait!

Ed Westwick is horrible, i just watched S. Darko on OnDemand and that kid needs acting lessons.

    lol...

    S. Darko.

In case you missed it the first time, lol.

well AICN said it wasnt bad...but it was. i need to stop listening to that site. Harry Knowles seems to like everything that moves at 24 frames per second.
  • I'd like to show Gemma Arterton my Wuthering Heights.
  • Westwick hasn't had many movie roles, just bit parts I think like in Breaking and Entering, Son of Rambow, and the horrid S. Darko to name a few. I think Gossip Girl is the best the he's been in.

Horrible. This is just going to be another horrible version of a fantastic novel. Why are they doing this?? Ed Westick doesn't have the background and acting chops to pull off the depth of Heathcliff. This is will be beyond disappointing, but obviously a tween dream gem.
    For shame, Hollywood!
  • Yeah, Wuthering Heights was the worst book I've ever read. Seriously. It's retarded. There's like six Catherine/Cathys and a wolfman named Heathcliff and it's all this boring bullshit like "oh man i fucking love you" "i love you too but you're an outcast" "i'm gonna be a wolfman and shit" "okay."

    That's the fucking book.

That said, I would probably watch it if Arterton was in it. Because she's hot.

there was two cathy's. a bit far fetched saying six... dot you think? retard.
  • I remember the song from kate bush did you too?

They could pretty much just film Gemma eating lunch, sleeping, buying groceries, whatever. I'll buy a ticket.
  • Hmmm...I don't want to judge too quickly, but for some reason I get the feeling this may turn out more for the teen demographic. I've been looking forward to a new movie of Wuthering Heights, but I'm not sure how I feel about these two...Arterton is promising, but I'm not sure about the casting of Westwick.

I agree with Butterfly.Ed westwick was brilliant at portraying Chuck in gossip girl, he was one of the most dramatic and probably difficult charcters to play and he pulled it off.
I'm not going to judge until I see the movie.

are you freaking kidding people who are complaining? anyone seen ed as chuck on gossip girl? when chucks dad died he went all depressed, emo, angsty, angry and basically made me think that he will be an AMAZING Heathlcliff.
