VOTD: My Favorite Movie (Star Trek vs. Star Wars)

Star Wars vs. Star Trek

My favorite sci-fi movie of all time if the one that starts with a small ship being attacked a larger ship…

You know, Star Wars

I mean… Star Trek.

Did you notice all the similarities between George Lucas’ Star Wars: A New Hope and JJ Abrams’ Star Trek? You must watch the College Humor video after the jump.

Spoiler Warning: if you havent seen the new Star Trek movie yet, you might not want to watch the video!

Of course, this isn’t very surprising. If you know anything about screenwriting or storytelling, than you know about Joseph Campbell’s Heroes Journey, the mythic structure that has been utilized in many many Hollywood films. Someone once created a similar comparison between Star Wars and Harry Potter, which shows the underlying structure of Campbell’s teachings.

  • Pissed off
    Awesome

Thats why District 9 will be the best movie this summer.
  • that...
    is...
    funny.
  • John
Lets just hope the sequels to Star Trek don't contain any ewoks or Jar Jar Binks.
  • Ewoks I can handle but Jar Jar Binks? Uhhhh
  • Keenser (Scotty's little alien buddy) was far more tolerable and actually welcomed in comparison to Jar Jar Binks.

Just like in the original SW films Chewbacca/Han Solo friendship added that "good comical comradery" that was present with Scotty and Keenser which is actually entertaining to watch unlike Jar Jar who was just a major nuisance every time it peered its head into the screen.
  • i already heard that the first 30 min of star trek 2 take place on a frozen planet
  • Yeah, I'm cool with the Ewoks. Wicket was pretty ruthless. But, Jar Jar should be sent to a black hole - where he'd slowly stretch into a strand of bubble gum flavored particles.
  • that's funny.
  • Cat
    Haha
  • Even after 30 years, the graphics for Star Wars still hold up.
  • A.J
are you sure that's not the countless remasterings GL has done?
  • Yes...after digitally re-mastering them every fucking 'special' DVD release they had.
  • sam Scovill
Star Trek took a page from star wars and it worked great.

You know what franchise should really take a page from star wars?

    Star Wars . . .
  • This was the movie the Star Wars prequels should have been.
  • Exactly.
  • Palmer
Sure that video shows the similarities, but who cares? Both are great movies.
  • Is it really me?
And...lets see, when did Star Wars come out? And when did the original Star Trek come out? Everything can be compared to something, and the small similarities are stupid, and when you look at the stories...they had to be the same...oh and the biggest problem with this...Star Wars sucked....Star Trek didnt....
  • badeboom
    Yawn.
  • I guess that's what happens when you let a star wars geek make a star trek film.
  • It's called a story formula hundreds of movies have followed, but okay...
  • Yea, your right, it's called Monomyth or "The Hero's Journey". It's a pretty interesting theory/observation about stories, how they are formed and the basic outline they follow.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth
  • I know what its called :) But thanks for sending a link to those that don't.
  • Pretty funny.
  • Anti-Septic
Hmmm, I dont mind at all. As long as the script made for a great movie then I will be oblivious to it being similar.
  • Anne
Joseph Campbell's monomyth.<< If you read up on this, you'll understand why so many stories (especially these two) are so similar.

Not to mention MOST adventure stories.

.....also, Lucas based A New Hope entirely off of Joseph Campbell's monomyth, so yeah. o_o
  • HELL yes. Hero with a thousand faces. Well played Anne.
  • Dean
Pike never knew Kirk's father, he just wrote his dissertation on him. But apart from that, there are a lot of similarities. Having said that, I'd hardly call it a 'Star Wars rip-off' as a lot of the things in Star Trek adhere to cannonical events from the tv show such as Kirk being a rebelious farm boy from Iowa. Still pretty funny though!
  • Damn.
  • JKW
God bless formulaic structure...though let's face it, there are only 6 unique stories in the world and at this point, it's all about execution instead of "pure" creativity. Hats off to Star Trek for capturing the same magic that we enjoy from our sci-fi melodrama/soap opera/space epics...whatever they're called nowadays.
  • Keenser (Scotty's little alien buddy) was far more tolerable and actually welcomed in comparison to Jar Jar Binks.

Just like the original Chewbacca/Han Solo friendship added that "good comical comradery" that was present with Scotty and Keenser. Jar Jar was just a major nuisance.
  • bobdisgea
    you dawg. you dumb.
  • Is it really me?
...did I just get called dumb by a person who wrote "you dawg.you dumb"...Oh and Im glad you called me dumb, because apparently me having my own opinion makes me somehow dumb. Yes I must be dumb, because seeing how my opinion doesnt match yours, which must clearly be the right opinion, then Im dumb...congradutlations...you just made yourself look very ignorant.
  • lern2spel
coming from the person who couldnt spell congratulations
  • abs
    Funny Video.
Next film "No Kirk I am your father"
  • LOL - very good!
  • rcesm
I'm not sure there's anything to this...
  • Yes there are similarities but like others have mentioned it was executed quite nicely.

I actually felt Star Trek 09 was more of a spiritual successor to the original SW trilogy than any of the prequels that Lucas whipped up ever were.

  • all the more... AWESOME!
  • Haha, this is pretty good! Why reinvent the wheel? If you're going for a blockbuster sci-fi epic than Star Wars should be the blueprint. Take it and modify as needed.
  • Mikecrazy
HOLY SHYT! That was AWESOMENESS! I bet the trekies feel really stupid.
  • TrekMat
Hey Mikecrazy...no more than watching the Empires battle hardened stormtroopers get beat up by a bunch of Ewoks with sticks, or seeing Jar Jar Binks completely ruin every movie he has been in.
I think JJ needs to reboot Star Wars!
  • haaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Reboot Star Wars. How bout just a Darth Maul Spin-Off?! Im so down.
  • ZeroCorpse
    Yeah. See "The Hobbit"...

Prologue: Ancient battle (and loss of the Ring)
    Wise old man Gandalf.
    "farm boy" (gardener) Bilbo.
Bilbo and Thorin don't like each other.
Bilbo saves the day by sneaking into enemy stronghold.
Bilbo ventures into enemy lair to rescue something else.
    Doomsday enemy (Smaug) destroys city.
Bilbo finds the tiny weakness in the death-dealing monster.
    Big final battle.
Bilbo & Thorin become friends in the end.

See also The Odyssey, the tale of Perseus, the tales of Hercules, and pretty much every other hero's jouney story since we invented language.

You're not clever if you're only now noticing that adventures have a standard story progression. It's literature 101.
