Terminator 5 Rights Will Be Up For Grabs

Terminator Salvation

With the release of Terminator Salvation on the immediate horizon the future of the franchise hangs in the balance, sorta. Terminator is in a rare position, being a big franchise that isn’t owned by any one distributor. The Halcyon Company, which owns the Terminator rights, will likely have a fourth successful film and the first of a potential new trilogy, come month’s end.  If the film is the success that it is expected to be, Hollywood will be gearing up for a good old fashioned bidding war.

According to Variety, MGM has a 30-day right to first refusal to finance and distribute a fifth Terminator film. MGM has passed on the option to make  Salvation, which at the time didn’t seem like a sure thing, especially without Arnold Schwarzenegger’s involvement. Warner Bros paid an estimated $50 million for domestic rights to Salvation, while Sony paid more than $7 million for the international rights.

But MGM is ready to make a serious play for the next film, with Christian Bale already signed on to return as John Connor, and McG has committed to direct the sequel. The interesting distribution drama will begin when Halcyon delivers a first draft of the screenplay to MGM, along with budget and financial demands. We’ll keep you updated.

  • MGM besides Bond, they don't have a whole lot now besides remakes, remakes, and more remakes of their films.
  • and bond movies are still sequels
  • I see Warner Bros having the biggest chance at getting the rights.
  • I don't, because MGM has 30 days to get it. They wont pass up on the future of this series. Even though we all love WB.
  • Still depends on the success of Terminator Salvation which everyone I talk to wants to go see, and every trailer looks great. I am not really concerned about who gets it as much as I am relying on Terminator Salvation to be a good movie.

i agree WB should get the rights
  • gah
I hope so. they're a much better studio. I mean who else wouldve made Watchmen, Observe and Report and countless other ballsy projects? WB doesnt play it safe and I like that they greenlight bleak, unconventional tentpole films. Terminator Salvatiion looks like it falls under that.
  • Right now, I think WB is probably one of the better studios out there, along with Paramount. Sony hasn't done a whole lot in a while (that I know of) and of course, Fox is the worst. (Sans the awesome Fox Searchlight)

yeah if WB is smart (and they are) they would keep it.
  • And re-launching Bond and tossing Venom in Spider-Man 3 wasn't ballsy at all! Angels & Demons and Year One (coming out soon) are not tentpole and ballsy either! Those will be instant classics, just like Valkyrie broke box office records!

So what was your point again?
  • Angels and Demons will be an 'instant classic'? I sure hope not.
  • Sarcasm same as the person who responded to me, straight sarcasm. Year One looks like crap, Valkyrie did not in fact break box office records. I was simply making a point that Warner Bros. is not the only company to have made bold moves with their choice of films.
  • I made a great elephant teknoleji the dancing skeleton is very good and successful flim mean that I like a flim
  • hopefully whoever gets the rights turns down McG's idea for the next movie of having Bale go back in time to fight the machines at the start of the war with conventional weapons.... I WANT TO SEE THEM FIGHT IN THE FUTURE!
  • cat
    Please no mcg
  • dannyboy
how can u say no McG the movie aint out to judge him
  • Cat
Because he's a hack and has already stated he wants the next movie to take place in the present
  • that's crazy... I had no idea that WB did NOT own the rights to Terminator.

I have a horrible feeling that Salvation will be a big let down. All of the trailers and associated clips are impressive as far as effects go, but seem vacuous. The trouble with the series is that you can reinvent the story at will due to the overuse of time travel. If this one sucks, McG et al. can just say that the future didn't happen and start over again. For a story that hinges on huge consequences, there are ultimately no set consequences at all.

The idea of having the 5th movie take place in the present is a hell of an idea. Imagine the harvestors coming back and it be like Orson Well's 'War of the Worlds'. I could see a massive viral marketing campaign to get people to join the resistance and fight these things. This is a movie who has potential for viral marketing to be bigger than TDK if it's done right.

MGM with Terminator, Hobbit and Robocop? Oh wait, they're also doing Red Dawn, Fame and that horrible looking Saturday Night Fever on a Train movie.

Dump McG, re-reboot the franchise. Also, Sony paid 75 million, not 7.
  • Infrafan
Too many cooks in the kitchen.
  • MGM needs something. I think they're also doing Robocop with Darren Aronofsky. Tom Cruise and UA haven't done too much either.
  • Infrafan
That would also open up the chance for Robocop Vs. The Terminator.
  • Reboots galore and shifting timelines... films are getting crazy.
  • i just hope Salvation is a good enough movie to guarantee more sequels to the franchise. Well, sequels that are worth watching.
