Another Jekyll and Hyde Movie Gets Greenlit?!

Last week it was announced that Keanu Reeves would star in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Jekyll, the Justin Haythe-scripted modern day retelling of The Strange Case of Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for Universal Pictures. Apparently there is another Jekyll and Hyde movie in development. King of New York/Bad Lutenant director Abel Ferrara is moving forward with his contemporary reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 classic novella.

This second project is retitled Jekyll and Hyde. Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent have been cast in the title roles, which sets the project apart from the Refn version as Reeves is set to play both personalities. UK production company Independent is producing, and the film will begin production in late Summer 2009.

The original novella tells the tale of a “London lawyer who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the misanthropic Mr. Edward Hyde.” The story is best known for its portrayal of split personality, good vs. evil, and coining the popular phrase “Jekyll and Hyde”. The book has been adapted for film, tv and stage over 123 times.

Also of note, Guillermo del Toro also has an adaptation in development titled Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It’s a more traditional take set in a gothic horror setting closer to the source material. But with del Toro’s busy schedule, I doubt we might ever see that film go into production, and if we ever do, it is likely to be 10-15 years down the line.

  • So Forest Whitaker transforms into a shitty rap artist? Poor guy. I hope they find a cure asap.
  • Haha, I was about to type the same damn thing. I am interested in how is going to turn out though.
  • Wow, I met Abel Ferrera at a local film festival I was interning at not too long ago. That dude is out there.
  • oh dear. whatever shall they do?
  • Forrest has a really strange career. It's almost a movie Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde type of a career. Really Good or Really Bad... And then There's 50 Cent...
  • they are also developing a film version of the musical
  • Reminds me of that great era in the 90s when opposing studios would try to beat each other to releasing the same movie (Armageddon/Deep Impact, Volcano/Dante's Peak, etc.)
  • Wow 50 cent
  • TapZepol
Funny, seeing as 50 replaced Forrest in Stallone's The Expendables.
  • and 50 Cent got replaced by a better actor..the dude who played the aweome president in Idiocracy!
  • 50 wasn't cast in the Expendables for long... it's now Terry Crews.
And please let this be some sort of silly rumor. Forest deserves better than this.
  • OMG, this is terrible.
  • I am full hiphop style environment that flim tells me these films had very good feelings that are experienced untold
  • ziggi
    oh the humanity!
  • I guess "50 cent" adheres to his motto "Get rich or die trying". On another note I hope Whitaker backs out of this one.

Ferrara also sucks at directing so I don't see anything good with this project other than Forrest and the source material (which still won't be enough to lift this movie above the mediocrity that awaits).

Why? I hate when Hollywood does this shit. Just create a contemporary character with the same attributes and wow audiences with that...if you can. The problem is that even with a Jekyll/Hyde derivative, you still run into the problem of how to make the well known story interesting for new generations. So, apparently, Hollywood doesn't feel comfortable on that "sell" so they just attach a familiar name to the script in order to get people interested an into the theater. Disney does the shit all of the time.
  • San Dimas High School Football Rules! So does KEANU!
  • Oh great, now we get to see Fidy mumble his way through yet another movie. Why does he keep getting cast, I understand he's popular but nothing he's been in has been successful. How many chances does he get?
