This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

TAKEN
(Available as single-disc Extended Cut and 2-Disc Extended Cut)
They just don’t make movies like Taken anymore. It’s as straight-forward a thriller as they come: bad guys kidnap girl, dad isn’t happy about it, dad f**ks up the bad guys. But as this film proves, simplicity isn’t always a bad thing. There aren’t many things more rewarding in life than watching the always awesome Liam Neeson laying the smackdown on an endless array of evildoers. Combine that winning formula with director Pierre Morel’s raw, visceral style and co-writer Luc Besson’s to-the-point and totally badass screenplay, and you have yourself one of the most satisfying 90 minutes of ass-kicking goodness to come out in quite some time.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single disc includes an extended cut of the film and no extra material. The 2-disc includes the extended cut, commentary with director Pierre Morel, writer Robert Mark Kamen, and cinematographers Michel Abramowicz and Michel Julienne, a making of featurette, an Avant Premiere feature, and a Inside Action: Side by Side Comparisons feature which looks at 6 different sequences.

TAKING CHANCE
The most-watched HBO original in five years, Taking Chance tells the true story of a military escort officer (played by Kevin Bacon) accompanying the body of 19-year-old marine back to his hometown from the Iraq War. ‘Stirring’, ‘emotional’ tearjerkers like this don’t really interest me much, but the reviews for the film have been mostly positive, so if movies like that appeal to you, don’t hesitate to check it out.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: A deleted scene and three featurettes.

UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS
Just what I was hoping for—an unnecessary prequel to one of my biggest film disappointments of the past 10 years. But that’s not all; they’ve also replaced the sole redeeming quality of the past two films: the tight-leather-wearing Kate Beckinsale. Did anybody out there ask for this film? Does anyone care about it in the slightest? Hopefully the answer to both of those questions is ‘no’, so this series can die a much-deserved death.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Filmmaker commentary and 3 featurettes (”Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - From Script to Screen”, “The Origin of the Feud”, “Re-Creating the Dark Ages - The Look of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans”).

S. DARKO: A DONNIE DARKO TALE
Speaking of unnecessary sequels/prequels, this week we finally see the arrival of the much-maligned straight-to-DVD Donnie Darko sequel. If you had even the least bit of hope that this film might turn out decent, let this review confirm your worst fears. Not that you couldn’t have already predicted that from the trailer. It looks as though somebody watched Donnie Darko, didn’t understand a goddamn thing about it, and then decided to make a sequel including all of the weird elements from it without realizing that all of those details actually served a purpose in the original storyline.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Filmmaker commentary, deleted scenes, and 2 featurettes (”The Making of S. Darko”, “Utah Too Much”).

SETH MACFARLANE’S CAVALCADE OF CARTOON COMEDY
If you love Family Guy but wish you didn’t have to sit through all that “plot” to get to the cutaway gags, you’re in luck. Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy is 50 minutes of nothing but those types of cutaway gags. The shorts were originally produced for YouTube, and you can check out a number of them here. Personally though, I’d rather gnaw off my own feet than watch 50 minutes of jokes like this.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Red carpet premiere featurette.

  • I'm definitely going to rent Taken but I think further on down the line it will be bought by me. As for Taking Chance, I might check that one out one of these days.
  • I think Taken was entertaining. But it shouldn't be on the BUY IT category. It should be on the RENT IT category for sure though. In terms of writing, Besson still hasn't bested himself from his great piece Leon. And Taken is just that. It's the bit revenge parts from every revenge movie you can think of. Boiled down to an hour of solid action and killing.

You can easily fast forward the rest of the mundane crap with his daughter and wife. And I don't buy Maggie Grace as a 17 year old.
  • Can't wait to get my hands on Taken on blu-ray, i caught a special screening last year and was blown away at how awesome it was, sure the story is lack luster but it is a great popcorn flick and the action is superb.
  • Underworld was alright. Certainly nothin' I'd buy, more of a rental.

I'm disappointed that they even made a sequel to Donnie Darko.
  • luper
not to mention the ending of s. darko doesn't resolve anything. what a stupid movie.
  • I've seen the last Underworld and I really enjoyed it! The 2nd one sucked big time but Rise of the Lycans is definitively a must see!
  • TLBorlando
This is where we differ Mr. Quigley. I like these articles. I bought The Wrestler, I bought Slumdog Millionaire, I even bought Ben Button. I saw Taken in the theatre but I will not buy it to add to my collection. I did not think it was a good action movie. I love Liam Neeson as an actor and a person, and I am sorry about his late wife Natasha. But people, at least rent this movie - do not purchase it.
  • ...Taken has bee on DVD for a long long time, just not in the US.
  • Larry
I am now utterly convinced that Adam Quigley is not the man for this job. Leave him on the podcast with Chen and be done with him. He seems nice enough but thats not enough.

This week in DVD is by far the weakest link on /film...
  • bought taken, love that movie.
  • StuntmanMike
I went with a friend of mine to a horror convention a few weeks ago in Jersey and James Duval, the original Frank the Bunny was there. My friend brought up S. Darko and James talked for about 10 minutes about how dumb the film looked. He couldn't believe that it actually existed and told us all about how Richard Kelly sued the people making it and how he thinks the new "Bunny" just looks so retarded.

It was a really cool experience and definitely turned both of us off from every seeing S. Darko.
  • Lawdog
Taken is on DVD already??? Damn, my stoned procrastinating ass! I completely missed it in the theater!
  • To be fair these roles aren't some sort of methodical approach. You can easily drop any actor in these types of films. Give them a workout plan and teach them hand-to-hand for months. Your result will be the same for anyone.
  • Brad
Yeah, that's why we've gotten such great performances from Steven Segal, Chuck Norris and Van Damme over the years - because it is only about their physique and combat skills.

  • Taken is a rent all the way. Also Rhona Mitra is at least as hot as Kate Beckinsale if not hotter, but still don't watch that horrible movie.
  • Taken was awesome. Definitely a must-buy, especially for the scenes that weren't in the theatrical release here in America.
  • Taken has a badass screenplay? Luc Besson rights like a 13 year old girl on speed.
  • Your comment has been invalidated due to a rights/writes grammar fail.
  • He just hasn't written a great revenge movie in years. I would love for him to return to directing films like this. But from the looks of it that's never going to happen.
  • Anyone agree that American Dad is tons better than Family Guy in terms of quality, story, and character development? Family Guy is horrendous, but American Dad reminds me of King of the Hill (which is one of the BEST animated shows ever).
  • While I agree American Dad is a really under rated show I don't dislike Family Guy the way most people here seem to. American Dad has stories that are heavily based in the personalites of there characters while Family Guy is animated sketch comedy(not to different from Robot Chicken) basicly "what would happen if we put Meg and Stewie in this pop culture setting?". Some people say that's sloppy writing and I agree it's hit and miss but I tend to like it more then I hate it. I think there Blue Harvest Star Wars spoof was pretty damn good as was there Steven King spoof from last Sunday. But lets face it nether Family Guy or American Dand has the emotional resonance that King of the Hill, Futurama or early Simpsons episodes had but I don't think that's what Seth MacFarlane is going for.

    P.S.
I haven't seen much of Seth MacFarlane's Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy but as one of the only people here that would actully defend Seth MacFarlane I don't think it's good at all.
  • Tony
    no.
  • Fir3Wolf
I liked Underworld and sure Underworld Evolution was not as good, I still think the prequel warrants a rent at lest for people who enjoy the genre/first two films. Taken is a straight buy, that movie is just so badass.
  • Everybody should see Taking Chance. So distressing I wish I had seen the movie alone so as not to embarrass myself.
  • Taken was fun, until the end. The end ruined it and turned into an episode of 24.
  • Yeah. It's one of those films that could have benefited from a longer period in production and a better director. I love revenge movies even when they're very singular in design. But if you're going to do the whole "one man army" theme.

You have to bait people better than this. Which has been done to death since the 80's.
  • i'll pass on taken, coulda been alot better.
  • I was surprised by the outpouring of support for Taken. I watched it originally based on the trailer, which was AWESOME. The film itself seemed like an exercise down Bourne-lane, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it in a guilty pleasure way. Not a great movie, but fun to watch.
  • Kudos Adam, for not being afraid of slaughtering a flick that is sponsoring your podcast. =)
  • liam neeson in taken makes jason bourne look like a child.
  • If anything, Neeson's character is what Bourne becomes after years and years and years...
  • Tony
ummm...maybe because Liam Neeson is nearly 60.
  • Taken is not a buy at all. Neeson is awesome but the entire thing is ludicrous. It is no better than a bad episode of 24. Skip it completely and watch a Bourne movie.
  • It's the best bourne knock off yet.
    because Quantum of Solace sucked.
  • John
Picking up my Star Trek trilogy on Blu-ray today. Can't wait to see Wrath of Khan in HD.
  • Taken is Death Wish with Liam Neeson (well, I suppose that's an improvement over Bronson)...so why all the hype?
  • Bob Funn
*facepalm* Have you even seen it?
  • Tony
    Because people are easily amused.

They like when foreigners get their asses kicked.
  • Because it's Liam Neeson!
  • Exactly!
  • damn straight.
  • I just looked up some of the Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy on Youtube... It was so bad it made me miss Family Guy... And i HATE Family Guy.
  • Gotta see Taken.
  • Demented_Muppet
The "I WILL FIND YOU, I WILL KILL YOU" reminds me a lot of another kidnapping movie, The Searchers, who's posters had the words "HE HAD TO FIND HER, HE HAD TO FIND HER..."
I highly doubt this movie is of any comparison as the John Ford classic, but it definitely looks worth a view, and possibly even a buy. Desperation is amusing.
  • Its no searchers but get ready to have some fun
  • HelloJackToad
Your comments are futile... but we still want you to post them. Fookers.
  • Keyser Söze
I like it, sans the stupid "I Will Find You, I will Kill You."
  • I love Benjamin Button. Screw the haters.
  • firewalkwithme
    AGREED!
  • Taken seems to be the biggest surprise of the year so far - I'm renting it for sure this week.
