Star Trek

JJ AbramsStar Trek exceeded the Sunday morning predictions, grossing $3 million more than expected. The Mother’s Day numbers elevated the film’s opening weekend box office to $79.2 million.

Vice-Chairman of Paramount Pictures Rob Moore says that “The spike over our initial estimates on Mother’s Day demonstrates that the combination of strong reviews and solid word-of-mouth contributed to better than anticipated attendance by families yesterday, confirming our belief that ‘Star Trek’ has a broad, multi-generational appeal.”

Also, IMAX has checked in, announcing that Trek made $9.6 million worldwide in IMAX over opening weekend. Trek grossed $8.5 million from 138 IMAX theatres domestically, a per screen average of approximately $62,000 for the weekend, marking the highest grossing Friday, Saturday and Sunday ever for an IMAX opening.

IMAX’s domestic opening contributed 11% of the hit film’s overall domestic box office gross of $79.2 million on less than 2% of the screens. The IMAX release also broke records internationally, generating more than $1.1 million from 25 IMAX screens, for a per screen average of $44,000.

Stoopid question: I was wondering for those who saw it in IMAX how much more magnified the lens flares would be on a IMAX screen compared to seeing it in a normal view. Was anyone blinded during the screening?
  • They're really not a problem, especially in IMAX.
  • gah
(sigh) jesus, stop it with the lense flair hate. I mean, you have to intentionally fixate on them to even notice that they're there.
  • yeah, it wasn't even a big deal
  • bluheat
I didnt say i hated the lens flare, I actually thought it was a stylish inclusion by JJ.
  • You're correct in two parts:

    That question was indeed stupid.

And guess what, a bonus point- you're stupid as well!
  • Joe Kick-Ass
    yeah
  • ZXCVV
I saw it in IMAX. You're welcome JJ
  • Travis McGee
IMAX records are broken every year. Every year, more IMAX theaters are built and more IMAX theaters that play educational films begin playing Hollywood blockbusters.
  • gah
well then they start making educational films about aliens and guys that fight crime in bat outfits.
  • Cat
It was sweet in IMAX except for the blinding light.
  • Haha yeah. Someone said 'lens flare is the new shaky cam' and I think they might be right.
  • sarek
and yet fast and furious made 82 mil. dom > kirk?
  • Joe
Fast & Furious made 72 million on its opening weekend.
  • So close to breaking 80 mil!
  • starscream9289
Those hardcore Trekkies must be so freaking pissed!

    Hab Sosli' Quch!

    (my Klingon is kinda rusty)
  • Fast and Furious made 70.9mil, so dom < kirk
  • Weyland_Yutani
Worth every IMAX cent. It looked and sounded amazing.
  • Agreed.
  • Konrad
I wonder how much money it would have made if movies were cheaper.
No seriously. The other articles here said the first Trek movie will probably end up having sold more tickets. I wonder if the number of tickets would be comparable if today's ticket prices weren't so outrageous.

It is a shame it beat The Dark Knight's record.

TDK crew put a lot of effort into filming certain scenes in IMAX yet Star Trek was fake blown up IMAX.
  • Yeah I was a bit dissapointed the only close imax had its screen broken so i had to see it in a regular theater it was a major bummer.
  • my name is
even in the back corner of the imax, it was still far superior to a reg screen.
  • J.J. Abrams should get huge Oscar Gold after this. His career is about sky rocket. no pun intended ... @DerdniK

    I have a question...

There's a shot of Earth near the end of the movie. Where you were, did the shot show the USA or Europe?

In the UK, the shot showed Europe, but I thought this was very strange, as such shots in almost any Hollywood blockbuster show the USA. It occured to me that MAYBE they inserted a different SFX shot for the market in each continent
  • Coleman
The shot in the screenings here in the US also showed Europe. However, there were ariel shots of the US (California) when their releasing the drill on the Star Fleet Academy in San Francisco.
