Surrogates Extended Preview

surrogates

Disney has also premiered an extended preview of Jonathan Mostow’s sci-fi comic book adaptation Surrogates. I haven’t been impressed with any of the footage I’ve seen so far, and some people who have read the graphic novel have complained the the film looks too glossy, totally negating the grittiness, Blade Runner-like style of the comic. You can actually hear our friends at the Totally Rad Show praise the hell out of the original graphic novel over here (at timecode 43:20).

Bruce Willis stars as an FBI Agent who is sent to investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves—fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles—enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. The murder spawns a quest for answers: in a world of masks, who’s real and who can you trust?

Surrogates hits theaters on September 25th 2009. Thanks to /Film reader Sean B for the tip.

Well, thats one missed opportunity to make a great film. Mark another point in the 'source material' win column.
  • nelson
    doesn't look bad
  • looks good but it really does look too glossy and not very gritty at all. with the exception of Willis in the surrogate controller chair thing.

Agreed with Pedro it is a missed opportunity!

wtf?! this looks cool as shit! yes, its lacking in the grittyness, but if the story is great who gives a shit.
  • It really needs a Blade Runner feel to get encapsulated into the story. Without it, it feels so...I, Robot.
  • Looks promising... with some polish i could see an excellent film coming from this
  • As soon as I heard the first word "Disney", I assumed it would be awful.

Bruce willis plus sci-fi can work if written well.

Meh. This is gonna sound harsh but it looks and feels like a bunch of old schoolers attempting new school sci-fi graphic novel adaptation without "getting it", turning it into 80s/90s- sci-fi schlock. What something like this needs is a Neveldine/Taylor or Zack Snyder sensibility - someone who 'gets' what the modern comic books has become...

    Looks great to me!

I just wish Bruce Willis's human self was clean shaven; heh. Otherwise, though, I think it looks awesome. And I can appreciate a movie that actually has a bit of color instead of being bleached like so many other films today. I'm stoked for this film.

Neveldine/Taylor? Zack Snyder? Really? Give me a break.
  • looks alright to me
  • Ugh, looks like another Bruce Willis cop movie. The graphic novel is pretty good science fiction, and this just looks really mediocre.
  • Bruce Willis looks awesome in this!
  • Dan W
Looks ok. I could see it looking a hell of a lot better with the grittyness that that novel apparently had
  • hey lets take 40 ideas from other sci-fi movies and make our own!
  • Actually the graphic novel is pretty original. Sure there are a few things that other sci fi has touched, but if you actually read the story, it stands on its own. Not even sure how you came to that conclusion since this clip doesn't really show a quarter of what the entire story is about. There's more to it than just the surrogate idea.

Big fan of the novel and this little clip doesn't look like it'll do it justice. But that wasn't a very good look and I'm still crossing my fingers that it'll be good. Sure hope so.

I agree with Neveldine and Taylor as great choices, but Zack Snyder sucks balls. Snyder has zero sensibilities, which is why 300 is a crappy movie and why Watchmen fell flat on its face. The only reason 300 made money is because Twitter hadn't caught on yet and friends couldn't warn each other about how awful it was.
  • This is a crazy year for sci-fi, good or bad I'm just happy to get my fix

its looks like if 12 monkeys and irobot had a baby ten years ago. It looks kind of dateed. Some of the action sequences look ok.
