The first footage from the Mike Newell-directed big screen adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has aired on an ABC movie special, and is now online. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer explains the plot of the film adaptation, as we see actual footage from the film. We also get to see some of Jake Gyllenhaal’s training and a look at the extensive on location Morocco shoot. I was on London-set of the film and while I can’t say much (or anything really), I will say that I was quite impressed with what I saw. Watch the clip after the jump, remember to hit the HQ button to see it in high quality, and please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Based on the popular action adventure video game, Prince of Persia tells the story of an adventurous prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) must join forces with Tamina (Gemma Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire helmer Mike Newell is directing, and Alfed Molina and Ben Kingsley co-star.

Wow, just wow. I am completely blown away at the fact of a Prince of Persia movie. I heard nothing of it, I saw nothing of it, I didn't even give a passing thought of this kind of project existing BUT IT'S HERE! It looks pretty good, let's just hope the final product is better.
  • dagreenman18
This could break the video game -to-movie curse. i remain cautiously optimistic.
  • Infrafan
    Silent Hill did that.
  • Brad
    No. It didn't.
  • Tykittaa
That curse was already broken by Silent Hill.
  • No. Not really.
  • WOW I think we really have a shot at a good video game movie.
  • gah
Im a fan of Jake but this looks so HORRIBLE.
  • Ben
After the first few pics of Jake I wasn't feeling this movie but that footage has gotten my attention....
  • looks horrible
  • I certainly didn't see anything remarkable. Sometimes I think Peter says things just to see how many people will blindly agree with him. ;)
  • I never said any of the footage in the video looked remarkable. I said I was on the London set of the film, and saw a lot of things that impressed me. :)
  • Ah, then excuse me for putting words in your mouth. And I hope we are all impressed by the finished product.
  • arg
probably not going to be any epic running up crazy walls and climbing crazy mazes. LAME
  • I am feeling the same way. I doubt they will keep the acrobatic feats from the game.
  • nelson
looks awesome some people dont know what the word horrible stand for i guess
  • haha oh i know what horrible means and this movie is looking to be the definition.
  • Wow, this movie looks completely ridiculous, hope it's at least fun
  • Agreed. With Bruckheimer attached, about all I ever hope for is an hour and a half of mindless entertainment.
  • nelson
actually there will be wall running in the script they use some parkour maneuvers
  • Final Word
Those early photos made me laugh, but honestly the film actually looks surprisingly good. I guess one of the benefits of pushing it to 2010, as they did during production, is now they'll have a whole year to market the film.

This could be a surprise hit for the summer of 2010. I know of no other film that's coming out then so it may have most of the summer to itself.
  • Yeah I'm not buying into this. Although it was only a tiny portion, that interview looked absolutely horrible, really why pretend its an interview. Just have Bruckheimer in front of the camera shouting "My movie is great. Its got abs and sword fights and big market place scenes. Woooohooo"
  • nelson
yeah interview was kinda dumb why was that guy even there lol
  • gah
he was there to jerk off bruckheimers already massive coke fueled ego
  • jason B
i'm trying hard not to laugh, cuz i really like jake...but seriously? this got made into a film?
  • I'm going to wait for a trailer before making up my mind. I want to see some moves like I saw in the game.
  • terry
sorry but his the whites Persia in that movie
  • invZiM
    wait...what?
  • No, no, no, no, no, no.

    Just no.
  • Everyone keeps saying video game movies all suck, but I thought the Silent Hill adaptation was amazing. Go watch it! There's more than just Uwe Boll's movies, you know. That being said though, this looks stupid. Like The Scorpion King stupid.
  • Brad
You are clearly insane. Silent Hill was awful.
  • Well, you must not be a fan of the series then, because in terms of an adaptation, it was as good a movie anyone could've hoped for. But me, being a fan of both the Silent Hill and Prince of Persia games, can say that the PoP film seems like a half hearted shit fest. Where are the awesome creatures and boss battle scenes from the game? Silent Hill had Pyramid Head, the nurses, and the same creepy tone as the game, but the PoP film captures more of a "safe" sort of Mummy-esque feel, whereas the game was super violent and gritty.
  • Brad
I am actually a huge fan of the Silent Hill games and I'm sorry, but the movie got nothing right except the art direction. It mangled everything else. Plot, action, dialog, characters, acting, suspense - It was every bit as bad as any Ewe Boll movie.
  • Watch Silent Hill and right after watch House of the Dead. If you can't decipher which is superior you're a moron.
  • Brad
Silent Hill is more technically proficient, but that doesn't make it any better. At least House of the Dead is hilariously shitty, while Silent Hill is just boring, pretentious and annoying. Furthermore, when you look at the source material for both films Silent Hill is the bigger misfire, because they actually fucked up a property that could have been truly great. House of the Dead - although fun for a light gun game - was always b-movie material.
  • Brad
But of course, comparing the two is a bit like asking whether it is better to be kicked in the nuts so hard they bruise, or stay up all night with the dry heaves - they both suck.
  • If you thought it was boring that's your opinion. To me, the visuals and atmosphere made up for some of the movie's shortcomings (the girl actress was not too good imo). I loved the games for being crazy, gritty, unreal, and disturbing, and I recieved all those emotions while watching this underrated film. Maybe you didn't but I did.
  • Infrafan
Silent Hill was done amazingly well, but you're getting no love for that movie here. Let those enjoy this piece of crap.
  • my anticipation for this movie just multiplied by five to the power of gemma arterton
  • th3mach1ne
This could possibly break the video game movie curse, it has alot of good things going for it but what about the TIME CONTROL?!?! I haven't heard anything about that!
  • Methos
So you have Jake Gyllenhaal paying a Persian prince. And Alfred Molina is in it too. Ok, I can't be the only one here who is offended by this casting. Why not just put Gyllenhaal in black face and call him Prince of Africa while there at it.
  • john
    that's tarzan!
  • chris
Dunno about Prince of Persia being a good video game movie but it will make for a good comedy. It looks ridiculous.
  • I'm a little worried about how generic it looks. The last thing the world needs is another Scorpion King (direct to DVD or not). I seriously hope that they can manage to add their own spin to things in at least the action sequences.
  • aziz jackson
Prince of Persia would of been a better flim if they didn't cast Jake Gyllenhall in the lead. First he is not Persia and second they should of cast someone who is a better actor.
  • Dunno, might be cool
  • gamersdoitoldschool
Who liked Silent Hill? It was awful. God awful. The game scared you with the fear of death, and the movie made you pray for it.

I'm going to wait for a trailer before I pass judgment. Basing the entire film on a couple of no-dialogue clips and an interview with an egomaniac producer is that total fanboy crap that makes me loathe my own comic-book loving, gamer-oriented, Kirk-v-Picard people at times: wait and see before you b*tch. You're hoping that this movie is crap because fanboys rarely have anything better to do than whine. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is pretty much right on the money with that, the internet is a place for people to complain about movies for absurd reasons.

That being said, the charges of racism because the actors aren't real Persians is annoying. First of all, Iranians are Caucasian. What? Holy Crap! Bet you guys didn't know that, but it's true. If you look at the genealogical history of Persia, you'll see that they are Caucasians. Oh snap! History silences fanboy ass AGAIN. Especially when one looks at the historical timing of this movie, most Persians were rather light-skinned. Does this mean that it is accurate to cast white Brits and Americans as Persians? No. But it isn't the terrible crime you all seem to think. And comparing it to black-face is an insult to the the damage that practice did in America. Second, though it may not be entirely accurate, Ben Kingsley isn't German Jew, but his portrayal in Schindler's List is fantastic. Wait and see whether or not the actor succeeds in ACTING the part appropriately before you decide it is so awful.
  • DoogleberryWinkler
Well said about the authentic appearance of Iranians. Seems like many people are throwing around the racism card in regards to Jake's casting knowing little about the region/history before they do so. Ironically they're exhibiting more ignorance with their ill-informed attempt to defend an incorrect image of races in that part of the world. Most current Iranians who don't have arab appearance probably appreciate the fact that the producers did some research. It's great that people are trying to be sensitive with a topic such as race, but there is such a thing as being too politically correct too.
  • ZXCVV
That Gemma Arterton girl is not good looking! Is everybody taking crazy pills! What the fuck!!!!!
  • "What does Jake Gyllenhall bring to the movie?"

"Well for one, he's not Persian...but he is a great actor!"
