the princess and the frog

Update: The High Definition trailer is now available on Apple. Full trailer still embedded after the jump.

As you probably know, the full trailer for The Princess and the Frog will be attached to Pixar’s Up, which hits theaters later this month. Well guess what? The Disney Channel has premiered the trailer early and the video has shown up on YouTube. I think this looks just wonderful, like the classic Disney films from my childhood.

This is Disney’s return to hand-drawn animation, a new take on E.D. Baker’s novel The Frog Princess (which was actually the original title of the film).  Did you know that this is actually the 49th animated feature in the Disney canon? Thanks to /Film reader jaynbalt for the tip. Watch the trailer after the jump, and please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The Walt Disney Studios continues its fairy tale legacy in animation by taking moviegoers on an all-new “once upon a time” musical adventure. Set in the legendary birthplace of jazz – New Orleans, The Princess and the Frog will introduce the newest Disney princess, Tiana, a young African-American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the fabled French Quarter. From the heart of Louisiana’s mystical bayous and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile, voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn.

Featuring the voices of Anika Noni Rose (as Princess Tiana), Oprah Winfrey, Keith David, Jim Cummings, John Goodman, Jenifer Lewis, Bruno Campos, Michael-Leon Wooley, Peter Bartlett and Terrence Howard.

Directed by and based on an original story written by Disney’s acclaimed filmmaking duo John Musker & Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules). Scored and music written by Oscar®-winning songwriter/composer and New Orleans native Randy Newman (Toy Story, Monsters, Inc.).

The Princess and the Frog hits theaters with a limited run in New York and LA starting on November 25th, followed by a wide release on December 11th.

  • Looks amazing, can't wait.
  • Gus
I dunno. Looks only okay to me. The frog looks like a mix between the frog from that Looney Tunes episode and some character from Shrek. And, at least in my opinion, it doesn't look to have any of the spark or magic of their "classic" animations. Maybe that's just me though. I still have faith that this could be good, but I'm not expecting them to pull off some sort of Pixar-like masterpiece.
  • RWF
a mix between that looney tunes episode and some character from shrek? that is the most vague comparison ive ever heard. so clearly, the frog doesnt really remind you of anything.

and as far as disney being able to "pul off" a pixar-like masterpiece... and i wont go back to the 40's and 50's because thats just different.... but more recently walt disney feature animation's the lion king was absolutely certainly of pixar quality, or rather many of these pixar films that came after lion king, are of disney calibur.

pixar is incredible, and i dont dispute. but come on, they wouldnt be around without disney. financially, or creatively. many of the most influential pixar directors and artists came from and were trained by disney
  • Gus
Yeah, I realize now that that comparison was very vague and stupid when it came out of my head, but it worked up in my brain. That usually happens.

See, I just think Pixar's animated movies are some of the best ever created. Yes, The Lion King is great, and so are a lot of the other older Disney movies. I know that. But, in my opinion, they just don't have that same…maturity level of the Pixar movies. I know that Disney movies are wonderful kids movies, but Pixar movies always seem to me to ring true to adults and kids more so than Disney movies.

As for Pixar not existing if it weren't for Disney, there is no denying that. I just think that Pixar has evolved into one of the best animation studios ever. Yeah, I'm probably a fanboy…
  • maturity level? in The Lion King, the king is killed by his brother, and it's up to his son to avenge his father's death. i know all the other Disney movies aren't that heavy, but not saying TLK was mature is little out of whack.
  • The animation looks stunning! Definitely seems like a reutrn to oldschool Disney.
  • Andygee
Cant wait! its very reminiscent of Cinderella and the amazing childhood classics.
  • Looks fantastic! The art is great. Definitely has that old school feel. Totally going to the first showing possible.
  • jessi
This looks AMAZING! The princess is gorgeous, and the prince is hot! He's like a miz of aladdin and hercules :)
  • Shawn
Baron Samedi is in a disney film.
  • I really respect the fact that Disney is doing drawn animation again. However, I think that the premise for this is a little thin...
  • I am -so- excited about this. I love Disney's 2D animation. The only 3D one that has made me fall in love recently has been Bolt - I don't know why, but beyond Toy Story and Bolt, I have trouble enjoying the 3D style.

    So this is wonderful.
  • This looks beautiful. I hope we get to see the stunning painted background I got to see at one of their showings.

I also hope this pushes Disney to become experimental with their 2d work again like Roy Disney was pushing for when he was struggling with Eisner.
  • Wow, the last clips I saw of this movie looked bad, but Oh My God this looks stunning. Sure, the humor may not be perfect, but to art is WONDERFUL!
  • Brian
3 cheers for classic Disney! Very nice to see more of a trailer, and such a great looking one.
But the beginning of the trailer...is that going to be a norm for Disney/Pixar trailers nowadays? The chronicling of past work.
  • JNS
Doesn't look like there's much use, if any, of the computer animation so present in the hand-drawn animated films since Tarzan '99. Peeks my interest more than the generic-looking Up.
  • How is Up in any way generic?

Oh and it's "PIQUES." SPELLED P-I-Q-U-E-S. Not PEEKS. Not PEAKS. PIQUES. This is the umpteenth time this week that I've seen somebody use it wrong...
  • RWF
generic-looking Up? hahahhaha..... that is a sad attempt to the "im not getting on the bandwagon! i like hate things that are awesome!"

seriously, you just sound like an idiot.

but i do agree with your excitement about it looking as though it hasnt been touched by a computer. i believe they tried very hard to achieve this look, in fact i think peter posted something a few weeks ago with an interview or something saying there actually was NO COMPUTER (3D) animation at all, except for the special effects. which is smart
  • Brad
Looks meh but...come on. This isn't going to be up there with the Disney Movies of the early 90's, like it advertises.
  • Charlie
    More like

"50 years of magic, and 25 years of shit."
  • its nice to see them going back to there more traditional animation style. looks old fashion interesting and full of negative stereotypes
  • G. Goose
The problem I think is that Disney still thinks it has a legacy to uphold with their hand-drawn stuff (i.e. their "Nine Old Men") and thinks that the only way to restore confidence in viewers is to reach back in the vaults for inspiration. I think the way to restore people's confidence is to make a great movie. I don't know if they did that, because so far this looks like it's trying way too hard to be an instant classic, and instead it comes off as stale and overwrought, it reminds me of Anastasia (which was rotoscoped by the way)

I remember seeing ads for Mulan and the Lion King when I was a kid, and those movies had such wonderful tone and scope, that I didn't care who made it. I wanted to see those damn movies.
  • M-OCleansStuff
That's a good point. I do applaud them for not abandoning 2D. After this movie, we'll see if it was just a marketing gimmick or if they truly were trying to make a good 2D animated film. Hopefully the latter.
  • Alex
As someone who hasn't read too much about the plot for this, was I the only one surprised at the twist this trailer lets us in on?

I mean I was wondering how they were going to stretch the "is she going to kiss the frog" premise feature-length, but I had no idea they were going to turn her into a frog for the majority of it.
  • Bobby
Well at least Disney has the right mind set in terms of marketing the film. I hope it's as astonishing as a movie as it looks.
  • Loved this! It takes me back to those fond childhood memories of re-watching all my favorite Disney VHSs until the VCR broke

  • trailer's kinda like lilo and stitch style. i like it
  • Shumby
    That's new... Awesome!
  • natram
    looks like a classic

    cant wait
  • drmecha
Holy crap. Her accent is going to be annoying.
  • Visually it looks great and they did a good job with the trailer. But, I still saw the last clip /film posted and all the jokes were flat. *crossing my fingers*
  • Disney still has that magic.
  • WOW! Found the trailer on iTunes, I f you look on the Trailers download section you can look at it. It is gorgeous!! Pure Classic Disney quality.

  • This has got to be the most wonderful trailer I've ever seen for a Disney movie! ^__^ I love the whole idea behind this, and I pray that this movie will do well, despite all the complainers. I am SO looking forward to this, and I can only hope to make a story myself that can reach the caliber of Disney. ;)
  • It looks great, looks like they'll have an amazing creole New Orleans feel, but damn i am very afraid that... well they have a history with non white characters, and that damn firefly from the teaser.
  • Ms.N
I can't wait to see the movie. I know many have issues with the film, but who cares!!! Every disney classic has been great so far. I know there's alot of issue about the prince being a different race, but it's already made ok. Why argue over something that's not going to change. And how do you know that this is the only film Disney is going to make. The next film could have a Black prince who knows...... Princess Tiana is beautiful and the prince's really cute.
