Brett Ratner No Longer Directing Conan

conanearlnoremjr1

Hack director Brett Ratner might not have a chance to ruin the legacy of Conan after all. That’s right, the Rat has departed from the reboot due to scheduling issues. Producer Joe Gatta tells Empire:

“We’re currently in the process of hiring a director. For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work. But you never know what can happen.”

The current plan is to being production on August 24th in Bulgaria, and as soon as they find a director, the search will be on for a star to play the iconic role.

Ratner revealed last month that he is close to going into production on a project titled Trump Heist, written by Ocean’s Eleven scribe Ted Griffin. Another action comedy, rumored to feature Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle and Chris Tucker as a group of employees of the Trump Tower who conspire to rip off the building’s residents. Sounds like a project better suited for his “talents”.

Ratner isn’t that he’s a bad director, he’s very serviceable, mediocre, and middle of the road. But the Rat’s films have been successful to the point that he’s being offered big franchise films, and that is where my issue with the director begins. I have no problem with the guy making another Rush Hour, the Hugh Heffner Story, or another middle of the road action movie. I just wish he would stay away from the Conans and Beverly Hills Cops.

Discuss: Who would you like to see direct Conan?

  • Jay
    yay
  • Tony Scott or Louis Letterier seem like logical choices
  • Tony Scott sounds good. uys who sorta have experience with Sword fighting and stuff: Ridley Scott and Zach Snyder.
  • To replace Ratner? Yeah, if you don't really want to up the quality too much.
  • Louis Letterier would be a step in the right direction....Tony on the other hand hasn't made an interesting film since Domino...
  • Yeah Tony Scott has been falling off the ball lately...
I think just about anybody is a better director than Ratner lol
  • RNL
Hasn't he only made two films since Domino, one of which hasn't come out yet?
  • well Deja Vu was horribly executed and it looks like Scott basically made the same movie...but using the script from the original Pelham...which will never be better than the first one...the whole point of a remake is to improve upon the first film...it's like what we've seen with American remakes of European horror films...it's a serious lack of ideas and massive egos....the remake of Rec was awful and didn't have the same impact of the Spanish version...the English remake of Let The Right One In will suffer the same fate....

remakes should be done to bad movies or movies who deserve a reboot...Pelham 1 2 3 is a classic and shouldn't be remade...Tony has really let the quality slip on his projects and I don't see this upcoming one being any different....

I remember he was going to make a film about the Somalian pirates...months before the news caught on to it...you'd think that would have been the movie that should have been released this summer instead....even his concept for the Warriors remake sounded better...using real gang members instead of actors like he did in Domino
  • yeah but the trailer for The Taking of Pelham 123 looks kinda meh
  • Unless I'm reading that wrong, are you saying that Ridley, Snyder or even Tony Scott are close to the same level of Ratner?

    Wow.
  • Ridley Scott. Not his bro.
  • Brad
Fincher. I want to see what Fincher would do with straight up fantasy material and Conan has a dark, gritty vibe that I think would mesh well with his sensibility.
  • Nonstra
I bet that new Conan will be a PG13 flick! blasphemy I say !!!

Bring on tit flashing booby hopping hot middle-eastern chicks!!!

Well, that's one bullet dodged for Conan. We'll see which direction the next one comes from. Personally I want to see someone do for Conan what Nolan did for Batman. I think there is huge potential for a Conan franchise in the right hands, but the chances of it landing in the right hands are slim at best.
  • Right, "scheduling issues." I got ya.
  • whsmith
Alright, here's a bizarre choice out of left field: I want to see Aronofsky direct Conan. I know he's lined up for Robocop, but personally I think another Robocop is totally unnecessary and doesn't capture my imagination at all. He fiddled around with Batman and Watchmen in the past - but that got nowhere. It's past time he got a shot at a bigger flick, but why Robocop? Conan could be taken in so many different and interesting directions. It's got the whole pulp fantasy thing going for it but with a lot of dark and gritty potential. A unique visionary director like Aronosky tacking it on? I can imagine something really cool happening.... but that's just me.
  • Neill Blomkamp. District 9 looks amazing.Or Alex Aja. I want to see a fucked up Conan.
  • Cat
    Thank you thank you

Ah yes, fans of the untarnished cinematic achievement that was "Conan" can now rest easy.

    Give me a break.

the fact that the originals are no classics is all the more reason I would want them to do a reboot, and do it well. It's one of those rare cases where a do over seems justified to me - but not with Ratner involved
  • Aronofsky or Boyle

just be interesting to see what they'd do wtih it. Obviously both great directors...I think Boyle could pull it off easier since he seems a bit more versatile, but I wouldn't doubt Aronofsky at all.
  • Adam Swegarden
they need to pull down Juan Carlos Fresnadillo for this one. The 28 weeks later grain and style with conan would be sick.
  • Thank god. I can't stand Ratner and his Rat Productions. Bring on someone new, reinvent it.
  • Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) would do a decent job...I really think a fresh view on the material would be interesting... the list of directors was short to begin with...I remember being interested when they mentioned Rob Zombie but I don't want to see Tyler Mane as the lead....

I could see Gerard Butler playing Conan...since he knows how to train and do the fighting choreography along with somewhat decent acting abilities ....I just don't want to see some bodybuilder or wrestler cast in the role...let's hope the casting is a little more inspiring than their idea of a "good" director...
  • How about Alfonso Cauron.
  • Not that I could care less if Ratner directed this movie but I will go on record saying that most people bash him because it appears popular to do so. I happened to enjoy the Rush Hour movies, The Family Man, and didn't think X-Men 3 was all that bad.
  • Brett's angry lover
The Rush Hour movies eat ass. I will agree Family Man ain't all that bad, X3 I can live without. Any guy who sits on set and pops in a dvd of another director's film and says lets do it just like that, does not need to be directing in my opinion.
  • One's opinion is never wrong. I just think all this hate should be pointed toward a real piece of garbage like Uwe Boll. Now that's a bad director.
  • I keep coming back to this site because any mention of Brett Ratner gets an immediate "hack director" in front of it. Good work. Also, I am glad that he is not directing Conan. I am upset because he will be directing projects in the future. and people actually pay him money to make movies. I hate the Rat.
  • Vinyard
I thought Conan was busy replacing Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. Didn't know they were making a movie about him; besides, that concept art is way off. News to me.
  • Vinyard
I'll throw Terry Malick's hat in the ring.
  • skywarp
    There is a god!!!
  • charles
    "applause! applause!"
  • Drew
I don't care who directs it as long as they value the source material. I'm tired of Hollywood taking films based on existing properties that are popular BECAUSE the source material is good and then saying "okay, but let's completely change everything!" If the IP is popular because of its material, then use that material. Conan is one such case. Make it dark, gritty and violent, but don't shy away from the depth and complexity of the world and its inhabitants either.
  • tee cee
agree!... keep it dark and PLEASE keep it Violent.!! It's Conan and I dont think I am alone in saying if its another PG blockbuster it will be hugely disapointing.
  • ziggi
    way2go Crom.
  • Bob
Okay. This is going to seem crazy at first, but take a minute to think about it.

CLINT EASTWOOD should direct the Conan movie.

As an actor, Eastwood made his career playing the "violent untamed stranger" that comes to town and upsets everyone's schemes.

As a director, he has filmed huge battle scenes in some of the biggest war movies ever made.

And he'd bring mainstream attention to a film that will otherwise be dismissed by most of the media as a "genre" film.

Anyone have Clint's phone number? Let's give him a call.
  • Ross
In an ideal world, Ridley Scott or James Cameron.
  • Lawdog
For a profession that has long periods of downtime, there sure are a lot of scheduling conflicts. Just once I'd love to hear a producer say, "He sucked. I fired him."
  • CROM does exsist! My prayers to him have been answered!
  • I just hope it keeps to the violent content...and the director has some horror/action background with knowledge of the canon of Conan....
  • What are you talking about! Triple H as Conan would be AMAZING.

    ;)
  • Terror Australis
The first two Conan weren't that great anyways (actually the character never appealed to me at all) so I don't give a fuck if Brett Ratner or anybody else directs it.
  • lol - PLEASE be kind enough to shed light on why RAT is considered hack - i don;t reall care for him myself, but I know alot of blogs, high profile blogs like slash, do not think very highly of him. Was it because of what he did to Suoerman, making a boring, crappy POS? Please provide detaiols if you would be so kind... I am interested in hearing them THANKS IN ADVANCE!

In what universe are "Conan the Barbarian" and "Beverly Hills Cop" considered gold-star properties not to be sullied by anything less than a top director?

    Please.
  • Al
"In what universe are "Conan the Barbarian" and "Beverly Hills Cop" considered gold-star properties not to be sullied by anything less than a top director?"

This universe. Conan is one of the premier icons of fantasy fiction. Robert E. Howard, his creator, is second only to Tolkien in his impact on the modern genre. Even the film is considered one of the best fantasy films of all time.

    Please.
  • steve koussa
one of the barbarian brothers should play Conan! they are built like the real conan small hips no arnold schwarziniger wide hips and grips! the barbarian brothers are the only white body builders ever that have builds like dark tan humans! in other words humans with darker tan skin! no one can do the part like them! they would just have to go back on the juice for this one film! boom
